If you are unable to extend his current insurance because he is already out of the UK, there are a couple of companies that will cover him. One is World Nomads and the other is wordwideinsure. I think they might be expensive, but it would be worth it for peace of mind.

That's good news. Thanks for letting us know
Normally book travel insurance with tour operator booked holiday with but used moneysupermarket.com and results come out costing around £10 whereas First Choice charge £43. What is the difference, and are there any cheap travel insurance companies that are decent and have a good reputation. Thanks.
Im off to New York for 5 days on May 24th. I have annual travel insurance wth Direct Line, who are not covering their customers for problems abroad arising from closed airspace due to the volcanic ash.
I want to know Im covered whilst Im out there in case there is a problem with my return flight, Marks and Spencer do cover this, so my 2 questions are
1. If I keep my annual policy (as Im off to IOM a week later) and take a single trip with M&S at the same time, is this illegal? (as it is to have 2 car policies)
2. If I cant do the above, if I take M&S insurance now will I wil be covered as the ash cloud is a known problem, though I did book my trip about 9 months ago.
Thanks for any help

I would urge you to read the policy thoroughly before committing to a cheap policy. Some don't even cover baggage. Another reason some are so cheap is that they have a very high excess in the event of a claim.
With travel insurance you usually get what you pay for.

:(
Who are you flying with? If it is a EU carrier then you will be covered for "care" if your return flight is affected. They should arrange accommodation and food or you can arrange it yourself and claim back reasonable costs.
No insurance taken out now will cover for anything related to volcanic ash as it is now a known problem and insurance only covers for the unknown.

I thought as much regarding new insurance taken out. Im flying with Virgin, dont know if they are covered by EU regs?
Thanks

As Virgin are based in the EU you will be covered for care under the EU regulations which is food, accommodation and 2 phone calls.
Thanks for that (again) luci, I had read they were not paying out, but I trust moneysavingexpert, its spot on.
Some companies were not covering claims related to the ash initially and then changed their minds a few days later.

They intended to remove the blighter but have discharged her with the plan to call her back in a few weeks time.
We hope that she can go private and have the operation next week and after a week of discomfort and a few weeks of normality be ready and able to fly to sunny climes in mid July.
The big question is how will this affect our holiday insurance? Technically, like a bad tooth, once it's removed it's problem solved.
Worst case scenario is that she won't get an op for 18 weeks which I guess will make the insurance premium stratospheric!!!?
either way your insurance premiums will be higher. If she has been in hospital, even for investigative tests, then you'll have to declare it to the insurance. She will either be on a hospital waiting list or have just had surgery, both of which necessitate informing your inurance company. You will need to shop around for the company that does the cheapest quote for those with pre existing medical conditions. Hope she feels better soon.
If you havnt already taken out insurance then Yes you may find it difficult to get cover before she has the operation and for X amount of weeks afterwards or you may find that they will give cover but not for her condition.. Shop around for the more specialist with pre-existing conditions.
Checked online and came up with..
Insure & Go - was the cheapest at £112 with pre existing medical conditions for their basic Silver cover. However - it DOESN'T cover for ash cloud and then looked at independent reviews NOT concerning the ash cloud - didn't look too good.
I then tried Aviva - £146 with pre existing medical conditions NOT including States/Canada/Caribbean which would be £176 but if we do decide to travel there later in the year we can pay the top up. PLUS they cover the ash cloud for £10 per person. Reviews were very positive so think we're going to go with them.
I know the holiday company I am booked with will provide accommodation and will get you back home again, does insurance then pay for meals and expenses on top of that?
I checked with one company about volcanic ash disruption. I was informed that if not on a package but taking the independent traveller option on the insurance I would be reimbursed for accommodation etc. if the flight was cancelled. If you're on a package the tour op sorts everything.
If the holiday has to be cancelled Aviva will pay (up to?) £5,000.
