Hi Adele

I have read somewhere on here that you can use electrical appliances on the Gulet when the generator is switched on, usually for about 3 hours per day if I remember correctly.

The cruises sound brilliant, we are going to Marmaris next year and plan to do a short cruise (2-3 days) as we have an 8 year old and are worried he would get bored at sea for any longer.

Hope you have a great time, maybe you'll be so relaxed that you won't want to be bothered with straighteners anyway.

Hi Adele,

I've done 3 gulet cruises - 2 of them for singles and one with my boyfriend this year.

It's a brilliant holiday. I will presume you are on a standard gulet, in which case I hate to tell you that the generator is not on at standard times and generally people don't use hairdryers or electrical equipment. If you really, really feel you have to you can ask the captain to put the generator on for when you want to use your hairdrier etc. In my experience nobody has been bothered - it is a very, very chilling holiday and great fun with great food. I never even took a hairdrier because it is advised that you can't use them. Batteries/mobiles can be charged up again if the generator is on - ask the captain.

Cabins are small but perfectly adequate. Can get quite hot but you can always sleep on board. You should be fine in September, and the sea temperatures are lovely and warm late in the season. En suites are basic. Toilet and sink and you will probaby have a shower within that room (ie no cubicle), so everything gets wet. All part of the fun!

We were in a 'luxury' class gulet this year which had extras such as shower cubicles, hairdriers (never used!) and air con in the cabins. But again, these things only worked when the generator was on so the captain would put the generator on when moored up early evening so the air con could cool the cabins down.

Don't worry about the basics, you'll be so relaxed you won't be thinking about clothes, hair, make up.

I go on a small forum hosted by the travel agent that I went on the first two gulet trips with and by far and away the most asked question about gulets from females is 'can I use my hairdrier' and then when it's a 'no' a panic ensues.

Until they actually go on the gulet and then realise that it's actually great fun not bothering with anything like that!

Thankyou for all of that info....it sounds wicked. Im sorry, I am just being a typical girl by taking my hairdryer etc

We were just thinking about if we ever want to go out for the evening off the gulet...would be nice to have the opportunity to hit the town!!!!

I was really looking forward to our hol, but the recent bombings in Turkey have really put a dampner on everything.

:wave Adele01...Once you are on the Gulet and relax and un-wind with everyone else, you won't bother about hairdryers etc. You will be in swimmwear most of the day anyway.
You will only be in Town for a short period. Do you go to Marmaris to Board Gulet? If you arrive at night it is usually just after breakfast you leave Marmaris. I would think that Marmaris, at this moment is very well protected by Police. They depend too much on Tourism to leave it unprotected.
Take a good book and card games/quiz books etc. for your entertainment at night when you stop in deserted bays.Explore the villages in the evenings. Get up early if you can and have a wander through little villages and meet the Turkish people...they are lovely.
The back cabins on the Gulets have a window as opposed to a porthole, I prefer them. It was, out of bed, swimsuit at the ready (take sandals for swimming to shore as the coastline can be tough underfoot) and slip out the window into the sea before the smell of breakfast got me back to the Gulet. Don't do this if engine is on !
Wish I were going with you!

It's a singles company called friendship travel - just make it all one word and add the usual www and dot com on the end. Their gulet holidays are popular so people are often asking all about it, it's a travel site and you click on the button for chat room. All sorts of subjects on other holidays they run also.

Adele, you are only like everyone else! You may have an evening in Marmaris if that's where you are going from, but I betcha you won't even bother with the old hairdo if you do go out on the town, the gulet experience kind of gets you like that. And putting shoes on again!!! Awful, takes some getting used to.

Enjoy!

I've seen the gulets when I've been in Turkey and really fancy doing a 2-3 day trip on one. Is it v expensive and can you book it last minute when you're in Turkey

I'm not sure about the prices but I think they are quite reasonable as there is plenty of competition between gulet owners. I'll try to find out and get back to you. You can book it when you go there and I'm pretty sure that's the cheapest way to do it. Either charter a whole boat to yourselves or share with other passengers - I believe in this case they just moor up in harbour until they've got enough people to go and then away you go.

I found the above who go from Fetiyhe, there will also be lots of choice in Marmaris. Very reasonable at £109 for 4 days/3 nights. Also goes to Olympos which I really fancy (has accommodation in tree houses, is a national park area with ruins all over the place and is close to Chimera or something like that where there are flames burning through the rocks!).

I think it would absolutely make a fortnight's holiday to include something like that and everything except drinks is included.

We are taking our third gulet holiday in THREE WEEKS!!!! time. Its everything everyone has already said. On both previous trips we did get the odd night out in town. When in Fethiye we were in habour overnight and had a great evening in the town. The crew were delighted when we all opted to eat ashore as that gave them a night off. On our last trip there were only 3 other people on the trip. One night the captain asked the men if they wanted to go ashore to watch the football with him (Turkey), at his friend's bar. us women went too just for the change.

I think if other people are intested too, you could ask the captain of a chance to eat shore somewhere. They are very flexible.
As for hair, I get mine cut short and spikey and take some wax.
Have good time.

We are sailing on 15th September from Fethiye to Marmaris and back to Fethiye, going with Vision Holidays. £494 each for 1wwk gulet 1 wwk B&B Olu Deniz

:ghug A great way to break the ice with your new ship-mates is to go at the earliest opportunity for a Turkish Bath together!
It will help your suntan along too.

See jopa I like to stay on the gulet. You do have to take the other guests into consideration and obviously the crew will need at least a couple of hours moored up somewhere to get supplies on but I personally just like the gulet experience. We did moor overnight in Marmaris because the other guests wanted to eat out and go out on the town, we stayed on the boat. We visited Fetiyhe for just a few hours one morning which i found better and it was also not too hot for those who wanted to to walk around and do a bit of shopping.

But there is something for everyone and last year none of us wanted to moor up in a town/harbour so we didn't!

Thanks folks. I'm going for one week to Marmaris with a friend who's never been toTurkey before. I think I'll try to find the one day trip and try it as an alternative to the lazy days boat trips (which I love incidentally but just so want to try a gulet) Do you know if it's at the harbour where the lazy days boats go from or further along near the Netsel Marina that we'll need to look?

Thanks

SandC...Have you been to Rhodes or Simi on the Gulets?
I really enjoyed those trips...even though the sea was very rough coming back from Rhodes and I got sea-sick! :(
We had two nights in both Harbours. Lovely wandering around the Towns and back to Gulet at night. Rhodes had a Sound and Light Show which was interesting. I can still smell the fragrance of the Jasmine in the night air as we watched the show.

Jacki2u...The Boat for Day Trip I got in Marmaris last year was larger than the Gulets. I think it took about 30 persons. It left from the Harbour.
Excellent Trip for the money.
