You pay in dollars as well, lol.

I'm surprised anyone pays in pounds/euros as its more expensive :(

I only pay for the visa in dollars, all usual things trips etc i pay with egyptian pounds. You dont get as many $ to the egyptian pound as you do sterling.

But it is £10 or £12 in British pounds isn't it?

No fear of taking dollars for trips (but thanks for the tip), barely got the $30 worth for the visa :) Might have to see if my work mates have a dolar or two lying around at home if I'm short a couple :tup

I got my mum $15 for the visa in case it has gone up since last year when i went, that works out to apprix £7.50. I remembered i paid in sterling the only time i ever bought a visa and it cost us about £15 not $15 :yikes Now if i need one i go to the rep and let them do the deed. Sometimes i dont know if i need a visa straight away, especially if i had never visited before.

Hi Kim

Ridicous i know!

We were stood next to the booth that said $15 :think and pointed this out, but the man said we had to pay in sterling and he got shirty with us. The travco man said pay in any currency as well.

Every time someone goes to sharm airport, it is going to be a different story.

hi is it true that you have get a visa even if you are stopping in sharm but going into the sea ?

So can you use US dollars or not. We are going in 2 weeks and was going tomorrow to get some dollars to buy them with. Will be getting 4 visas that makes quite a bit of difference.

The queue I was in, the one Thompson directed me too said know this queue only takes sterling.

So I said well I've brought dollars where takes them? The box 2 boxes away, so I had to pay at the box to the right of the queue thomsons directed me too & they took the dollars.

As you go it the boxes are to your left. There are two nearer the back left, they have BANK wrote about them. They tale dollars, they are not the travel companies ones.

Mick you will only need visa if you are going to cairo/luxor or if doing a boat trip to Ras Mohamed national park . You wont need a visa for any other boat trips locally or for just going in the sea ;). just write "sinai Only" on the top of your landing card that you will be asked to fill in and if you get herded to visa desk tell him the same . Those that want a visa will have one stuck in their passport , those that dont will receive a stamp that says "sinai only" then proceed to passport control. It is very confusing in arrivals with most passengers not knowing what to do and the confusion that this generates . Many just get sucked into the purchase of the visa simply because they dont know there is an option despite announcements on the plane now and notices that are put up in arrivals.
The visa guy will normally say . "do you want to go to cairo" and many people in all truth just dont know or hadnt given that a thought so the guy will tell you its safer to get one and out comes the money before you get the chance to think.

I showed them the $ sign in the next box, but they still wouldnt take our dollars, thank god we had sterling. To be on the safe side, i would take both :)

You dont need a visa for Ras Mohammed national park. Both my hubby and daughter did this trip last week. All thomson told them to take were their passports, even when they did this, no one asked to see them. My daughter never had a visa to start with.

I got in the Thomson queue & they wanted sterling, I said I had been told 15$ per person, that I had seen it on the web with 15$ wrote in the corner. That I had brought my dollars to pay & I was paying with them. Did I let on I can be a bit of a dragon ;)
I would have poped into your hotel to say hi, but I found Sharm difficult to get around. The hotel bus was limited & for two hours at a time. The cabs are so much hassle with the haggling beforehand & they were not allowed into our hotel, so good walk out to the main road & same coming back, out at the gate & walk the rest or wait for the hotel bus that went around. The heat was so fierce you can't walk around as much as you would like to & no bus system like the med resorts (I know they have their own busses, but its not like say dolmuses that the tourists & locals can use).

We went to Ras by bus & you do need visas for that. Perhaps the offical line is you "should" have them for Ras by boat, so theyhave to tell you to get them.

They pointed to the two tellers further up (with bank wrote above) & I paid them, no problem.

Tamtosh, 15 $/dollars in Sharm - on 22 June 08.

Hi Kim

I appreciate what you are saying re the visas, everytime i go there, its a different story, i argued in the thomson line that we wanted to pay by dollars, and he was really not pleasant with us, and demanded sterling, so nothing for it, we had to pay in english.

As for Ras Muhammad, Sam and rach went on the boat trip, they took the passports, but were never asked to see them at all.
As for the heat, well i hid under the sun brolleys all the time :yikes

Tell me about it, I have NEVER spent so much time in the shade on holiday :tongue

Yeah the Thomson queue refused to accept my dollars/any dollars, thats when I said "I've seen the visa, its $15 & thats what I've brought to pay it" (But kinda headmistressy).

Thats when he directed me to the "offical" queue to the right with BANK wrote above the boxes.

I think the first couple are something to do with Thomson or have some sort of agreement, as all Thomson arrivals are directed there & they make a pound or so on every visa.

But now I have been & know where the "offical" non joined to Thomson (or other agents) are, I would just go straight to them.

I can well imagine them not checking the visas for Ras by boat, we went by bus, I'm not a boat lover.
