I wear the clothes as I would in the UK. I see people on the plane in their shorts and T-shirt who must have frozen with air co n.

I can remember 1 February when my family left the algarve which was around 22/23C and got back to Gatwick to find temperature at 8pm was already well below freezing. The cold hit us as soon as we stepped out of the plane. When we got back to the car, I was the one who told Dad to 'Get the heating on'.

Another experience of temperature difference was back in May 2004 coming back from honeymoon in Greece, we left Athens which was top end 20's/low end of 30's and got back to Luton to mid/upper 60's, I actually asked Dad to put the car heating on.

i usually end up having to wear all of my big wooden bangles, long necklaces-the lot, rather than packing them as they then add about 2 stone to my bag. good job layering is in fashion, as i end up looking like an escapee from the masai mara tribe i have that much embellishment hanging off me, and then every time i lift my arm up it sounds like jimmy saville has boarded the flight.

I always set off the bleepers at security with all my bangles and stuff, and they always make me take my belt off, which results in me wrestling with my waistband to stop my hipster jeans falling down round my ankles

3/4 trousers for me with a short sleeve top and light jacket and always toe post sandals, can't be doing with looking pretty pretty, especially if it's an early morning flight, I like to feel comfy and chilled out. It amazes me with the restrictions now when boarding a flight eg no sharp objects etc but then you see women with 4" stilletto's, I'm sure they could come pretty sharp!

I have a friend who buys a short, lacy, strappy white dress in the UK and takes it to Goa with her. She never wears it whilst she is there - it is her "going home on the plane" dress and that is in January.
It was snowing in UK one year when she went back but would not wear anything over it.

I usually go away in winter for my annual two week holiday and I therefore wear layers. I also wear good, sensible yet sturdy underwear (nothing worse than flying long haul and your nick nacks keep riding up and giving you a wedgy) and of course a smile from ear to ear. :P

Jeans, T shirt, trainers, lightweight sweater and a fleece jacket... comfy on the plane, warm in the early morning on way to the airport and keeps me under the 20kgs allowance cos the jeans and jackets weigh too much for the checked baggage

I'm just bumping this up because I've been searching forums for all things Cuba related and found a thread about what people wear on the plane/to the airport. Now there are a large number of Canadians visit the island year round but particularly over the winter months to get some sun so this came mainly from those but it alerted me to something I hadn't even thought about.

Seems there is quite a consensus to wear double layering of clothes in an attempt to cut down on luggage. For example people will wear shorts under trousers, two tops, wrap, fleeces etc. Of course coming off the other end you're stuck with a load of clothing to carry as you step out into the heat, but knowing what the UK is like for temperature, it's not always a problem to 'layer' yourself in our typical summer weather.

I think it sounds like a good idea actually. Planes can be a bit cold can't they - a pashmina can double as a blanket but easily stored in your hand luggage................. you should probably wear your heaviest shoes and whatever you are taking as a 'just in case' jumper or whatever.

The temptation is to go 'summery' but with some clever planning you can manage to get room in your case for other stuff eh?

This has always been my approach especially going to and from Cuba - not because I want to create space in the case but because the temperature difference between each end of the journey is in the region of 10C even in summer! So I always wear a vest top under a jumper on the journey out so that I can strip down and soon as we arrive and still remain decent. Likewise I always have a jumper ready to put on as soon as we land back in the UK. I'm not generally a shorts wearer so don't layer them under longer trousers but I am the woman heading up towards the loos just before landing so that I can put the tights on under the lightweight linen trousers or skirt I've travelled home in. I also often commit the cardinal fashion sin of wearing socks with sandals for the outward journey so that my tootsies are warm when I leave but they can be whipped off easily before we land at Holguin or Havana and vice versa.

And I never travel anywhere without a pashmina or a lightweight shawl - it's an essential part of the travel kit. It can be great for wrapping yourself up in on a a chilly air-conditioned plane, makes a great mini pillow when folded up and can help preserve your modesty in all sorts of situations. For example, if you are still breastfeeding a little one but you aren't that keen on whipping your boobs out on a crowded plane, loosely draping it around your shoulders and over the baby's head means that you are saved the faff of expressing milk in advance but nobody else is going to be particularly aware that you are breastfeeding.

On walking holidays, I always wear the boots for the journey because I'll be wearing them most of the time and so they don't have a designated 'spot' in the pack anyway. I don't take much jewellery away with me on holiday but always wear the 'good' earrings when travelling because I reckon that in my ears is the safest place for them because it means they'll always be with me and there's no chance of them being lifted from an unattended bag or checked-in case.

Of course if I'm travelling for work then the routine is slightly different - I'll be wearing a fairly formal suit jacket because it will travel better on my back and then carefully folded into the above seat locker, than it ever will jammed into the small suitcase I tend to use for business trips. Also, if I'm being met at the airport, putting it on as we land, instantly makes even quite casual trousers and tops look a whole lot more formal and a bit more dressy. Similarly, if I know that I have to go straight to a meeting from the airport on arrival, I'll wear the smart heeled court shoes to the airport with a pair of flip-flops or little satin flat slipper-type mules stashed in the handluggage that get put on as soon as possible and the courts only re-appear as I leave baggage reclaim!

I always wear my fleece, no matter where we're going as I hate being cold! I just make sure to pack a couple of carrier bags in our hand luggage to put things in as we take them off. As for trousers, I always wear linen ones with stretchy waists as I hate being uncomfortable on the plane. M&S have got some in black and beige at the moment for only £20.

Going to Portugal in 3 weeks time, leaving home at just beofre 1.30 am. I'll be wearing tracksuit bottoms, long sleeved top and fleece jumper. On my feet, I'll be wearing trainers (never been asked to take them off for going through security). Bus to Dublin will have heating on. We arrive in Faro at 9.30ish. I can't see it being too warm in the Algarve 1st/2nd week February.
