dont just look at the big names for your holiday many smaller travel companies put their own packages together usually a lot cheaper eg

when i book our next jaunt. Thomson wanted around 450 each airtours about 600 each we paid 286 each same flights same holiday village inc transfers etc

I will again suggest Lassi in Kefalonia. With Argostoli being right on the doorstep with it's buzzing atmosphere for the evenings and the rest of the island easily accessible. I think you have it all on a plate there! 8)

Thanks guys, your help is apreciated.

All the suggestiosn have sounded fantastic but as i need a 2 week break it dawned on me there might not be much to do for that period.

I guess all I was looking for is some reassurance that its not going to be just me, the missus and a couple of bars ect.

Hi Lee. Much as I hate to do this (don't want it to get TOO popular), take a look at Parga :D. Gx

Have a look at Lindos. It is lots of sugarcube houses built around an acropolis with a beautiful beach below. Lindos has a real buzz about it. There are only donkeys and mopeds allowed in the village! You might have to go to the outskirts for an hotel as within the village it tends to be apartments and traditional Lindian houses. There is also good accommodation 5km down the coast in Pefkos which is also a nice place to stay. Rhodes Town is like a mix of Rome/Greece. Plenty of sights, cafes, restaurants and shops. Rhodes is a lovely island with loads to see and do.

That sounds very nice! How far is Lindos from Pefkos?

It's only about 5km. About 5 mins (6 euros ) in a taxi which is really easy to pick up either way. Have been to Pefkos the last couple of years and stayed at Lindia Thalassa Apartments (4* First Choice Holidays) which I would highly recommend. Lovely pool and a few steps from the beach. Easy access to the rest of the island. We used Marathon car hire - really cheap and good service. Have also had a couple of holidays in Lindos and loved it too.

Well, I'm getting there and I have to say its been a lot more difficult than I imagined.

I've narrowed down to:

Skiathos - Achladies Bay (Not idea as I can only go from Gatwick it seems but the island looks amazing!)
Crete - Rethymnon (A slight compromise but I can get here from Luton making access dead easy as the Missus lives in Luton)
Crete - Agios Nikolaos (Not too sure about this as I havent researched it as much. Looks nice and is easily accessable as it flys from luton)
Kos - Kos Town (Looks good, maybe slightly less greek than other places but cosmopolitan and plenty to do as well as being accessable from Luton)[/i]

So really can't decide between these. Can anyone shed some light on how expensive each area is? Generally speaking, prices for taxi's, beers, spirits and a 3 course meal type of things?

your lucky Mr P i could not get a Luton/kos[ Nissyros ] flight i have to go to Gatwick

wherever you go in Greece I'm sure you will enjoy it. if you into history/archeology then make sure you visit the Asclepium just a short drive from Kos town or also available as part of an organised trip

We went to Skiathos a couple of years ago and it was definitely the most expensive Greek island I've known. Ag Nik is a 2 hour run from the airport but a lovely place. Rethymnon is a lot closer to the airport and central for easier access to most parts of Crete. Kos? - Dunno

Hi Mr P. I'm surprised you have shortlised Skiathos after reading your first posting. I'm not sure there are any places of interest (plenty of beaches and buses). We found it quite commercialised (some people would say cosmopolitan  ). Also, when we where there about 5 years ago, they had a McDonalds .

Don't worry about Skiathos - No McDonalds that went two years ago its now a boutique. Strange how many people remember Skiathos for that reason.
There was a change of Mayor a couple of years ago, and he has done a cracking job. The Mayor was re-elected in October and again is spending money improving the island facilities. First it was the beach tavernas, then the harbour area where the pavements have been transformed, roads improved and relaid. Who is paying for this - the people of Skiathos through their taxes.
I visit every year, and yes prices went up with the euro, but the lower end of the market has been removed. Skiathos is not called the St Tropez of the Aegean for nothing. If you want to pay a lot and sit on a cushion with a cocktail - you can, if not there are plenty of places where you do not have to.

So does anyone have any ballpark figures for food and drink ect? Is it cheaper than the UK or about on par?

Wizard - Sorry, I meant East Midlands.

pargaluvva - By places of interest, I mean things to do and see. Not neccessarily monuments that are tourist attractions. Just things to keep us occupied should a day at the beach not be on the cards.

Skiathos is mainly about the beaches. Its a small island and there are very few places of interest to visit. Its easy to rent a boat and this is a good way to explore the many beaches on the south coast. We have never felt it worth renting a car here. Further afield are Skopelos, Alonissos and the Pelion, all well worth a visit. Its fairly expensive as far as Greece is concerned but by UK standards its fine, some of the harbour front tavernas are probably best avoided. We found Mykonos more expensive.

Hi. I'm not sure there are many things to see and do on Skiathos (apart from boat trips to nearby islands). If you like beaches, you will love Skiathos. I enjoyed our week there but wouldn't return.

Beer is on average 2.5 euros for a large Mythos, Wine averages 5 to 6 euros for a litre of house wine. A 2 course meal for 2 people around 15 to 20 euros. Obviously you can pay more depending on where you go. If you eat on the harbour side in Skiathos town you WILL pay more but get away from the tourist areas and you can get some fantastic meals at very good prices.
Last year, we haad some wonderful meals in the narrow streets of the old town.
We have just booked today for our 4th visit to Skiathos in September. We are staying in Koukanaries. 8)

Nice post John

Simple rule - In town if its on the front it will be more expensive than those tavernas off Papadamatis street. Out of town will of course be cheaper but with the more personal touch.
I have had some of my best meals in the small tavernas and ouzeries in the alleys around town.

Out of town and the first place I head for is taverna Apostolis at Koukounaries. just past bus stop 23, Wood fired oven, fresh fish and grilled meats. Michaelis is a lovely man and former sailor, survivor of a shipwreck in the black sea, Restaurant is dedicated to his lost shipmates. Great food and very cheap, and the best tszaiki on the island.

Thanks for the tip for that restaurant Naughty! We are staying at the Muses hotel in Koukanaries so will definately look it up. It sounds great.
When eating out anywhere in Greece i tend to go for the restaurants and tavernas which are away from the "tourist strips" As you say, the prices are lower, the service better and the quality of the food is usually far superior. I have had so many great meals in these places.
A great tip also is to look out for where the locals eat.........you can't lose!
