We're going to sharm for 2nd time this year, but would like advice on what underwater camera to bring? last year we had a £30.00 camera which was great, but unfortunately my photos look nothing like snorklebabes!!! I got some really good shots but not up-close. Would like advice on what digital camera to bring with us......
If you're reading this snorklebabe - let us know what camera you used, where you got it...etc... Also were you diving or just snorkelling??? I'm hoping to dive this year - if i'm brave enough!!!

The camera that Swiss is on about is a Sony DSCU 60 which I bought for my wife's birthday last year. Its only guaranteed for depths of up to 5 feet but is ideal for snorkelling and is a good quality digital camera for normal "dry use".

It's best to go for digi if you can afford it. Works out cheaper (and easier) in the long run. Mine's a Sealife.

That was off Velavaru The Maldives in December (but don't tell Briar, I'll get a slap for it not being Egypt).

I don't mind having to speculate a bit, as I know that all my holidays from now on will include snorkelling / diving. Me & hubby are totally hooked after red sea last august. So digital underwater camera will get plenty of use.

Only a cheapy digital (cheapy?). You know what I mean, cheap for what they can cost. It has buttons on the back for all the functions, and is tested to 60m (more than enough). You can also get an external flash for it.
A little bit of post production in Photo Shop, and hey presto.

It's best to get a decent set of high power rechargables for it. Normal batteries don't last long.

The boyf and I are off to Sharm in September and I am desperate to take some quality underwater photo's.
I have the Canon IXUS 700 and am considering buying the underwater housing for it, but at £130 it's a lot of money. I was wondering if other people have used underwater housing on their digital cameras? If so are they reliable (I'd cry
the whole holiday if my sexy IXUS was damaged!) and is the picture quality as good as when no housing is used?
I'm not just asking about the IXUS 700 housing. Any comments on peoples experiences with any camera housing will be much appreciated!

Everest uses a housing for his digital and gets superb results. No doubt he will respond to your post when he's next on line, but it appears that although these housings are pricey, they do work well.

Thanks for the replies. It was Amazon where I found the housing and after reading around this site it does seem like it may well be worth investing in. After all whats £130 compared to a lifetime of captured memories of the underwater kingdom

That seems really expensive just for a housing. Use an AQUAPAC!
I've always used an Aquapac - it a completely waterproof seethrough case that you just put your normal digital camera in and then you have a waterproof camera . Heres a picture using one that I took in Sharm el Sheikh last month, the one below is from the Maldives to give you an idea. Cheapest place I can find them is http://www.ifsogo.com ......there are on special offer on the homepage. ALOT cheaper than buying a waterproof housing, think ifsogo do them for about £16. Think they do underwater cameras aswell though if thats what you prefer.

As we are TOTAL novices to snorkelling we bought two for one underwater kodac cameras in boots today, which go down to 15 meteres?? Cost, £9.99.
