The only tablet I know of which inhibits periods is the contraceptive pill.

If there's another one then I'd like to know about it too!

GP or Family Planning clinic, and don't leave it till the week before you go. See them a couple of months before your hols.

There is a pill you can take that is NOT a contraceptive therefore you will have to pay a prescription charge. The tablet is called NORETHISTERONE and you have to take three a day starting three days before your period starts. You carry on taking it until you are happy for your period to start - this happens three or four days after you have stopped taking the pills.

I have taken it on two holidays and it's brill. You will have to see your doctor and have regular periods because you have to begin taking the pills at a certain time in your cycle. It's a bit of a pain having to remember to take three a day but I just took one with breakfast, lunch and dinner.

yes there is a tablet you can take, you start taking it 3 days before you are due, and when you stop taking it (presumably the day, you arrive back home), you should come on 3 days later. An absolute god send!!!BBB.

I get the tablets every year for myself & my daughter we just go and see our doctor a month before and the tablets have always worked :D just expect to have a little heavier period when you stop taking them  but well worth it.

Do you know if they'd be suitable for a 14 year old girl?

Obviously I'll ask our GP, but both my Daughter and I would benefit from these tablets, just worked mine out and it's due 28th July, the very day I'm going on holiday

Two thoughts!

Pippy, if your youngster isn't already taking 'the Pill' or other medication containing Norethisterone, I wouldn't recommend she start doing so just before you go on holiday. Often if you start this type of medication you can have bloating, headaches, tummy aches etc as I certainly did when I started this medication (as the Pill), and she may find these more troublesome than the period itself.

Secondly, although I managed to juggle my period successfully to avoid having it during my stay in Morocco over new year ... I still had the migranes and cramp that usually accompany it, so did wonder if it was really worth doing!

All the best whatever you decide, and have a great holiday.

i'm 24 and not on the pill but i'm sure that the doctor will advise me weather or not it will be wise for me to take it.

Thanks for that Als :D

I'm not sure if she'll need it anyway, need to ask her to work out her dates, but no she isn't on the Pill.

I'm definitely going to ask for it though, I've been on the Pill in the past with no side effects so hopefully I'll be fine with it, the other would really spoil the first week of my holiday if not :?

Obviously if you're not on The Pill, then these magic tablets already mentioned are a good idea, but if you are on The Pill, then you just carry on taking the next packet without a break. You get worse symptoms (bloating, grumpiness etc) when you finish that 2nd packet, but it's worth it to have a hassle-free holiday!

Pippy my daughter has taken tablets since she was 13 she is now 15 she has been fine with them no side effects at all :D .There is no way she would put up with having a period on holiday.

I gave my 14 year old daughter these last year on holdiay, will be giving them again this year. How is a 15 year going to enjoy her holiday if she can not fo in the pool due to heavy periods. I definetly agree due to the condintions on holiday. i.e pool, hot weather and having a good time, just remember this is not a contrective. We both went to the GP and will be going again this year.

Hi,

It's worth bearing in mind that the 'active' ingredient in Norethisterone is a synthetic progesterone and that while it works for most women its effectiveness will depend on the amount of oestrogen that your own body will be producing as part of your natural cycle. Also, some women have problems re-establishing a regular cycle after using it - this happened to me but after fairly prolonged use admittedly. It doesn't work completely for everybody but will have the effect of lightening the flow at the very least.

Another possibility your docter might suggest is Tranexamic Acid which also reduces and shortens the flow without actually postponing or missing a period. This was far more effective for me because it results in a short (ie 2/3 days) period with a very, very light flow which made periods much more manageable on holiday. This would also make using one of the very small mini-tampons feasible and might be another solution for some women.
