Help, I'm due the dreaded monthly when I'm on holiday, yet again. There must be something that you can get to delay this. Anybody know of anything. Got an appointment at the docs on Friday but if I know before hand what he may give me I can ask about it with you lot on here and google..
For postponement of period you can take 1 tablet 3 times a day, starting 3 days before the expected period and carry on taking them until after your hols , period usually starts about 3 days after last tablet was taken
Hope this is of some help
Another tablet prescribed is Primulot which is used exactly the same way , i think the Norethisterone is a cheaper version
i also use norethisterone and find them great to stop periods and there seems to be no side affects
I've had a great deal of success with Tranexamic Acid (also only available on prescription) but it suits me better than Norethisterone. Norethistorone is synthetic Progesterone and hence works on your hormones levels whereas the Tranexamic Acid isn't and works by preventing the womb lining from breaking down and coming away. Once my period starts I take 2 tablets 3 times a day and it reduces the flow to virtually nothing. It's a good alternative for anybody for whom Norethisterone is contra-indicated.
Thanks for your help everyone, off to google now.
Hi unfortunately my monthly is due within the first 3 or 4 days of our hol (typical I had the same happen last year ) So does anyone know if I would be able to take Northesterone (hope I've spelt it correct) as my periods are not that spot on regular, my cycle can be anything from 24 days to 29days but usually is 26days? Huh I bet it's no good to me
Fingers crossed.
I know it won't apply to Cazz and Twinkletoes but for anyone on the contraceptive Pill it's worth remembering that once you finish one lot, if you start taking the next set right away instead of taking the 'rest days', then you won't have a bleed until you finish that lot. It can be a good way of postponing a 'period' for holidays. It's probably not a good idea to do this too often but for holidays a couple of times a year most people should be OK but best to check with your GP first. I knew of a woman docter who actually took the Pill continuously for 6 months at time so she would only bleed twice a year!
what about if your sterilised? my friend has been told there is nothing they can do to stop your period...she's not happy as due on 3 days into there holiday
Hi cazzmickntom, I've managed to get a docs appointment for tomorrow morning so i will let you know how I get on, I was thinking the other drug that SMa recommends (tranexamic acid) might be better suited to me, I'm not too keen on some of the contra indications that some people on here have experienced (mood swings, bad pmt afterwards etc, my PMT is bad enough already!! ) but I'll discuss with the doc tomorrow
what about if your sterilised?
I have no real idea but could only assume that it depends on whether you've just had your tubes tied but your ovaries are still intact or not. But if you're ovaries weren't working then would you be having periods anyway? I always assumed that it was your ovaries that produce the oestrogen and progesterone that determines your periods and I thought that female sterilisation left your ovaries still functional with regard to your hormones and that it was just that your tubes were tied/cut/cauterised so that your eggs couldn't get down into the Fallopian tubes for fertilisation. In which case I can't see why you couldn't take Norethisterone just the same as anybody else.
But perhaps her ovaries have been removed and she is on HRT which will mean that she still does have periods? In which case perhaps her docter doesn't want to prescribe anything that would interfere with the HRT. But I would have thought that if she suspended taking the HRT then her periods would stop until she resumed taking it?
But all guess work I'm afraid as I've never heard that one before. I would suggest she asks her GP for more information about why she couldn't be prescribed Norethisterone. Perhaps she has another condition for which it is contra-indicated and it actually has nothing to do with the fact that she's been sterilised.

Cazz, my cycle is like yours but the doc didn't really say when to start taking them, I did tell her that I couldn't pin point my exact date, she just said about 3 days before I expect to come on, so I guess she must mean the earliest that I could come on, is that why you start yours on day 24?( Coincidence I think thats the same time as yourself I'm due around the 26th as well and we fly out on the 23rd!) So does that mean I should start them on the 23rd the day we fly? Huh what a day to have to remember to take 3 times a day! Thing is the doc never weighed me or took my blood pressure.....
Does anyone know what happens if you take these too early in your cycle, does it mean you would still have a bleed? I'm worried I might panic and take them too soon since I don't have regular cycle?
I've sent you a PM. Sure no-ones interested in our womens bits
i wouldnt worry too much if you take them too early i have to take them every month for 2 wks from day 14 to 28 as ive got other problems, i never remember to take them on time nor 3 times a day, im terrible infact and ive never had any side affects, but when i go on holiday ill take them as normal on my day 14 and carry on taking them throughout the whole of my holiday
Can you but norethisterone over the couter at the chemist or do I need to go to the doctors. Thanks
It's a prescription only drug so you need to see your doctor
Thanks Miss Chief1
How long after you stop taking them are your periods supposed to start.
