(sorry) - raki is basically un-aniseeded ouzo (I think) - you'll also see it called tsikoudhia (it's proper Cretan name) and tsipouro (on other islands and the mainland - came across some VERY nice samples on Paxos!)
16. Negotiating the car-parks, oops sorry, pavements in most Greek cities!
17. The Greek attitude to Health & Safety -"you can see that it's a 40 foot drop, why do you need signs to tell you?"
18. Closely aligned to 17. Greek practicality:- on complaining of a bad smell in our room (a rat had died in the ceiling space under the corrugated roof ), landlady's response (whilst handing over an Airwick ) "It's not IN the room it's outside" or, realising that when the shower was used, the water ran under the bathroom door, under the room door and down the hallway - cue knock on door, open door, lanlord hands over broom and demonstrates that one should shower with one hand, whilst brushing the water towards the drain with the other!
Oh,I LOVE Greece!
Elenitsa, you know your Raki, personally I find it a bit rough with one exception. A version called Mournoraki is manuactured in the villages in the white mountains in Crete. Although this is illegal it can be found in some shops and its delicious. It is not manufactured commercially anywhere in the world I'm told. The strength is variable and can be up to 80% by vol. it often has a pink colour and is distilled from mulberries. Try it carefully!!
I'll keep my eyes open in September - aiming to go up to Anopoli, so fingers crossed!
80%. Crikey. That's sounding better/worse than my potheen. "Don't drink anything pink" has been my guiding light for many years. Rule 2 has been "don't confuse the Greek and Turkish ouzos.
I was told that its so cold in the white mountains in winter that the locals drink it for breakfast, one chap said he also lights the fire with it!!!
I'm glad at least a few people like the cats!!!!.....we always adopt a few (well my hubby would say a few hundred!) When we in Kos there was the most gorgeous black kitten in the Agora ruins, he was so friendly, we saw him loads and then nothing, we reckon he must have been taken home by someone (at least we hope so) then we were adopted by the 6 hotel cats at the Alexandra Beach apartments in Kos Town....they must have had some cat friendly radar built in as I was waiting on the ground floor with our cases on arrival while hubby checked out where our apartment was on the 1st floor and all of a sudden, 3 of them were running towards me, miaowing, tails up as if I was their long lost owner or something ....or maybe that was their initiation ceremony....so from that time on, they ate breakfast with us, sunbathed with us, all 6 played hide and seek in our apartment with us...they were fun.....of course everyone fed them, not only the Brits!......yes I also like the relaxed way of life, GMT....roll on Cyprus in 2.5 weeks time and Crete in June!
thanks. never seen the name tsikoudhia before but bought some fime raki in the mountains heading for the lasithi plateau and I need to stock up again.roll on easter!
A warning about Tsipouro. We like to eat fish in Greece and have on occasions caused confusion and amusement when ordering one of our favourites, Tsipoura, grilled. It must be our pronunciation.
1. People, friendly and honest
Our favorites are firstly the frendliness of the people, the food although not a big eater, the scenery, the sunshine which always make people feel better even here in England their genuine total hospitaliy and the feeling of being in Greece you feel safe, they are the worlds nicest people and I love them all.
1.Freindly locals
- The bargins in the Monistiraki Flea Market's
Feta Cheese pies
The ancient history
The inexpensive Metro
The leafy suburbs
The Acropolis
Central Athens (the shops and buildings)
What i dislike:
- The smoking everywhere
The aggression
The sea crossing to Mykonos
The packs of wild dogs in the streets at night
The meat eating
Cheers
The stray cats
The temples
The food
Uzo
erm.. what i dislike
The metro
Greek Coffee
And how to make it: Greek oil and lemon juice, mix together in a small bowl, then fold yogurt into this. Add crished garlic to this or Garlic oil? and then i usually grate a cucumber and rinse out the water before mixing this in. I then place in the fridge and leave for around and hour. This is a fantastic dip.
2/ Stunning scenery set against a backdrop of turquoise seas and blue skies.
3/ The genuine friendliness of the locals. i very rarely if ever feel that this is an act to relieve me of a few euros.
4/ GOOD basic Greek food. (not to be confused with a lot of places that offer not so good frozen Greek dishes).
5/ Ice cold Mythos, not everyones choice admitedly but a day on the beach wouldn't be complete without a pint or two IMO.
1 Their lack of haste- I don't mind waiting an hour for my meal on holidays especially when it's sooooooo worth waiting for!
2 Their miles upon meals of off beaten tracks brill for riding a motorbike with the wind in your hair.
3 All the islands are differnt - have their own style.
4 The afternoon metaxa poured into a can of sprite at the poolside.
5 The little free extras at the end of the meal be it fruit or drinks.
I totally agree with Helen T - Metaxa is wonderful. It's so sweet and smooth, i don;t normally enjoy brandy. I havent been able to find it in the UK.
Brought a bottle back from Santorini last year. I haven't opened it yet- I'm saving it for the week before this year's hols to get me in the mood. Off to Mexico this year for a change.
"sorry..." My girlfriend would always bring me back a bottle of 5 star Metaxa and say it was the BEST.. is this true or is their something stronger?
Metaxa tria [3 star]
Metaxa pende [5 star]
and my personal favorite
Metaxa Epta [seven star] or yo give its proper name [anglisies greek]
metaxa epta astiri
