Hi,
My partner and I are looking at booking our 2007 holiday in the next month or so, and wanted to go to a Greek island. I think we've narrowed it down to Zante. We originally looked at going to Crete, but Zante just looks stunning. Problem is, not sure which resort to go to. I have looked into it a bit and Tsilivi looks lovely. Just wanted some opinions. The sort of stuff we're looking for is:
- nice beaches , preferably not rocky
- plenty of nice restaurants and tavernas
- some lively bars (not bothered about nightclubs though)
- somewhere that looks attractive and still has an authentic feel to it
That about sums it up. We are both 22 but not really into clubbing, more bars and restaurants really. I have found a hotel online that looks good and the reviews are excellant, it is called Planet studios and apartments. Is this quite central to everything? We will be booking to go in the last week of August 2007, any idea as to when is the latest we can leave it to book? I don't know how popular these place are!!
Right, sorry that's a bit of an essay but I have no idea about Greek islands really, let alone the resorts and you don't always want to go soleley on what the brochures say!!
Advice would be Very gratefully recieved!!
Cheers!

Hi Zante is a lovely island. Never been to Tsivili but we had a great time in Argassi a number of years ago. There were plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from but the beach was a bit small. It might have changed since we were there but it was a great holiday.
I have been to Zante several times and I love it there. We stayed in Argassi which is nice but the beach isn't wondeful there. This year we stayed in Kalamaki and thats a lovely resort, nice beach, lots of bars, tavernas, shops, two clubs. Its not a very qaint resort, fairly purpose built but we really enjoyed. Ate out everynight and not a bad meal.
Stayed in Tsilivi about 8 years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Lovely beach with well run watersports centre. Good amount of bars and restaurants. If I remember rightly we always called at the the Planet studios bar on our way back from the beach (as you do after a hard day). In fact we stayed there on our last night as we had an early morning flight and couldn't keep our room at our own apartments which were just up the road from Planet. If I am thinking about the same one it is 2 mins from the beach and probably 5-10 mins walk to the 'town centre' although there are bars and restaurants en route! One I remember in particular was at the top of the road from Planet apartments called Utopia (I think) - very friendly and brilliant cocktails (our first and last call every evening). If I went back to Zante I wouldn't hesitate in going back to Tsilivi.
i went to Zante for first time this year and stayed in Kalamaki. It was beautiful. One of the best holidays I have ever had. The beaches are gorgeous in Zante and the bars and restaurants are lovely too in Kalamaki. We hired a car and went around the island which i highly recommend. We also went on a ferry to Athens to see the Acropolis which was awesome! I was not too keen on Laganas, very noisy, bars and discos , but then again we are in our 40's. I am sure wherever you choose in Zante you will have a fabulous holiday.

Restaurants to try :
Stani - near the entrance to the beach
Mikaelos - On the road out to Zante town
Paris - on the main road opposite the entrance to Antonis Apartments
Parthanon - on the road to Laganas
Bars to try :
Cave Bar - an ABSOLUTE MUST!!! (Say Hi to Nikos from me )
Al Sandros - Opposite Paris restaurant.
Hi all. Which resort would be best for 2 adults, 1 child (age 12). Can't decide between Kalamaki and Alykanas Thanks in advance.
I would vote Kalamaki, I think the other resort is quite quiet, maybe a bit too quiet.

I agree.... and Alykanas is actually a looong way up north from Zante Town, so it's a lot harder to get to see other places. You're pretty much stuck in Alykes/Alykanas.
At least in Kalamaki you can get to Zante Town, Argassi, Laganas, etc... all in a short cab ride if you want to explore.
Thanks everyone. Booked Alykanas this morning before reading replies but it does look like the less commercialised option in Zante. We plan to get a car so we can have a look at the other resorts.
Alykanas is definitely not so commercialised as other resorts and if thats what you were looking for then you've made the right choice.
Hire a car while your there and have a look around the island, well worth it. Head down to the Vasilikos coast for stunning beaches.

hotel mainly quiet except for the daily overhead aeroplanes, but this would not stop us from returning.food excellent we never ate out all week it was so good , which is rare for the wife and i we normally try some of the restaurants, which is a compliment to the palace.
hired a car and toured the island which was fun ,airport on return a nightmare never seen so many queing.
we could not understand the spread of premiership football which bars fought for being the loudest and who had the biggest screen, why people don't pack their skybox totally amazes me?the odd quiet taverna was sadly missing?
i can only applaud the cleanliness of the venue bar in kalamaki and its hard working staff, the soda bar kalamaki toilets was a disgrace, also the 3 lions in laganas was also disgracefull.
if you saw their toilets you would not enter.
the greek people were most friendly, thank you the bitzaro staff.
I hav asked for the Bitzaro Palace to be added to our Hotel Reviews site. You should be able to add your review in the next couple of days.

We stayed at the Bitzaro Palace and it was a nice hotel - very clean, friendly staff and good food.
We would go back to Zante but not to Kalamaki

Stayed in Tsilivi last year it was ok but the beach is awful, dont let anyone tell you different, ive just come back from Kafelonia and that is in another league all together.
you cannot say the beach is awful in tsilivi, its maybe not the best but there are many many worse
Fortunately everybody has their own opinions. I loved Tsilivi and thought the beach was great. Went to Lassi in Kefelonia and hated it!
What a shame to judge Kefalonia on Lassi . Kefalonia is one of the most scenic and beautiful islands I have ever visited (and I've visited quite a few). I agree there are better resorts than Lassi but I think it's close proximity to Argostoli is great.
How anyone can say the beach in Tsilivi is good is beyond me, lassi is quiet but the beach is miles better than Tsilivi, it would be interesting if people would say what is there favourite beach
