I am considering going to Zante on holiday.

It looks a lovely island but I am a bit concerned having read various customer comments that there appears to be a real problem with rats infestation on the island and its puting me off slightly.

Has anyone experienced any problems regarding this or is this just being exaggerated

However, we did see a lot of rats droppings( but thankfully on the street and not in the apartment!)

Just got back from Zante, went 1st of May for 2 weeks. Never saw a single rat!

Zakynthos has rats like all other islands and continents.. If there was a problem such as an infestation in an area there would be a lot more complaints. I've seen single rats about in rural areas scurrying along the ditches between roads and fields but not in the resorts. The cats and other wildlife keep them down to low levels.. i have read a few comments around the web about people seeing dead rats on the roads and i'd guess they were in the rural areas between the resorts and villages..

I have been to Zakynthos (Laganas area) several times and have never seen a rat.

I would't worry about going, yes there are rats in Zakynthos but they are not a problem, as a matter of fact there is a larger rat problem in the UK than in Zakynthos.

We stayed in Old Alykanas in Zante 2 years ago and we saw lots of rats! Our villa was next to a field and across from a market garden so they were bound to be there. We saw them running in & out of broken water pipes next to our villa and we also had one on our patio! The village cats didn't really seem to bother with them I think the rats were too big for them!!
We also walked in to Alykanas most evenings and saw lots of squashed rats on the road.
We have been going to Greece for the last 16 years and have only ever seen the odd rat at night when it was dark but the rats in Zante were out in broad daylight!
I would say that we were aware of them but they didn't spoil our holiday in any way, and we didn't see them on our beach so don't worry, forget about them and enjoy your holiday.

ps the rats didn't put us off Zante but the fact that it's very commercialised did!!

We have been to Kalamaki for the last two years and have never seen a rat or evidence of rats but seem them regularly at our local Sainsburys recycling point!!!

Went to Tsivili last year, never saw a rat all week, not that i went looking for one.

I think this has been blown up out of proportion.

I have just found a great deal to Zante in Greece for May 2006 does anybody know what the weather is like in may is it worth going if you want a tan, also does anyone know if you can hire quad bikes in the resort Argassi?

This is not a complaint but query.

Zante is lovely and should be hot in may but not too hot. I went in July and it was fantastic weather. personally i wouldnt go anywhere on zante apart from laganas as the other resorts are fairly quiet and subdued.

ive been to Kefalonia in May and its very close to Zante, was lovely sunny 6 days out of 7, very warm great for swimming and cool enough not to need air conditioning in the evening. In fact pack a little something long sleeved just in case

Just arrived home from Zakynthos yesterday. Flew out on the 26th May for a week. Weather was around 24-25 degrees first couple of days. Thunder storm on the friday night and then the temps went up. Had up to about 32-34 after that. When we left at around 8.30pm on thursday it was very muggy, and some people were talking about another thunder storm. Flight back actually skirted around thunder over Corfu so it was probably heading that way.
Any rain you do get at that time doesn't usually last long and wont spoil your holiday.

We went to Laganas in July and it was wonderful, great people this year we are going to try Turkey.

Never seen a rat the hole time I was there

Went to Zante in early/mid May a couple of years ago....7 days of glorious sunshine...temps in mid 20's so not too hot so you could do other things...we put the hiking boots on and walked the back lanes. Evenings were a little cool at times. Down side...the locals said the the weather was not typical for that time of year as usually its a bit more unsettled. We hit it lucky.

Spent 2 weeks in Laganas last August diden't see a single rat go have fun it's great there

We went to Argassi last year and we did unfortunately see a rat - it was in the bamboo-wicker type covering over the bar. It was a bit scary to think it might drop on your head!! - needless to say it was the quickest drink we ever had!

Regardless of that we had a superb holiday, stayed at the Xenos Kamara and loved every minute - Would I go back? Most definitely.
