We hired a car for a couple of days and if you've never been to Greece/Zakynthos before it's worth pointing out a couple of things.
- Roads are narrow
- Roads surfaces are generally appalling
- The white lines on the road are faded but few people actually take any notice of them anyway
- The main tourist areas are crowded with (mainly) young tourists on mopeds and quad bikes
- Locals are wont to overtake even if there's something coming the other way
- Signposts are often difficult to see and interpret (in the sense of which direction they are saying)
Having said all that we thoroughly enjoyed our time out in the car as it enables us to see the whole island at our own leisure. Well worth it.
Best Bits
- Seeing loggerhead turtles in their natural environment
- Keri Bay
- Seeing the famous "Smuggler's Cove" (from the viewpoint, though not for those afraid of heights)
- The weather
- The Bitzaro Palace
- The views from the hills
Worst Bits
- Laganas (all of it)
- Kalamki Strip
- The roads
- The more "popular" beaches that were overcrowded (not our sort of thing though it may be yours)

Kalamaki has a good variety of bars, tavernas and shops, without being too busy. The main strip is safe to walk along at night with plenty of choice of where to go. The beaches (Crystal and the main beach) are sandy with lovely warm clear sea. The sea is also very shallow, so great for young children.

What a great resort, pretty quiet, but not too quiet. Plenty of good restaurants, shops selling the usual stuff, a few sport bars. Far enough away from Laganas not to be bothered by the 18-30 crowd.Book trips from the place opposite Paulo's restaurant. We loved the beach, it is really for the turtles so humans are only allowed to use a thin strech of sand close to the tide (the soft sand can have turtle eggs in, so you can't even walk across it to get to another part of the beach). No motorsports cos of the turtles, a really nice quiet beach. You have to be there when a plane comes over. See the lights in the distance, and then the plane just about skimming the sand as it lands nearby. A great family resort.

There were 7 in our party ranging from ages 12 - 68. We had a fantastic holiday on this beautiful island and we definitely stayed in the best resort - Kalamaki. We hired a car and went all over the island which is quite small and easy to see it all. There are 2 very nice restaurants I would reccomend. Michaelos Restaurant which is a bit off the beaten track on the way out of Kalamaki towards Zante town. If you make the effort to go there you will not be disappointed! Dennis and his team will ensure you enjoy your evening with them, the food is superb! I will also say the same for Zakantha Restaurant which is situated on the main Kalamaki street on the corner which leads to Hotel Exotica and the beach. Tassos and his team will also ensure you have a great evening and will give you a very warm welcome. We would reccomend the greek night there - it was a lot of fun! The food is equally as superb. We had a brilliant holiday in Kalamaki and will definitely return again soon!

Kalamaki is ok, no brilliant, just ok.
But, hire a car and get into the middle of the island, go on a boat trip, these things make all the difference.

Kalamaki is a very nice friendly resort with plenty to do in the evening.Unlike its neighbour, Laganas, its not full of teenage hoards and loud bars. Loads of good restaurants to choose from.We found " The Olive Tree" very good quality and selection. If you walk to the end of the strip and turn right there is a restaurant call "Merlis".Here they do a special 3 course for around 7 euros.Great value and great food.As Kalamaki gives priority to the Turtles, dont expect wide white sandy beaches. The sunbeds are all on the narrow beach near the sea.Wardens patrol all day and advise where you can and cant sunbathe. If you want nice sandy beaches hire a car or scooter and take a trip to Banana beach. Its about 25 min drive but the beach is fantastic with good facilities. changing huts, toilets, bar etc. Pleny of nice bars in Kalamaki with loads of choice. We usually ended our evenings at the "Oasis".Not the cheapest but they do fantastic cocktails. All in all Kalamaki is a lovely resort and we would return.

Kalamaki centre itself is full of bars and restaurants that cater for everybody, lots of shops too. We didn't spend an awful lot of time in the centre so couldn't really comment on where's good to eat and where's not.
We did hire a jeep from a company called Traffic car rentals. This was less than half the price that our rep was offering it for (and a better vehicle!). It was run by an English man who explained exactly how much of your money goes into the reps pocket when you hire through them. They are also online so if we go again we will book on the net before we go which is even cheaper.
In fact any trips are better and cheaper booked in the resort and not through the travel company.
We found some beautiful places on the island while we were there just by driving around and would recommend that anybody that goes gets out and about to see what's around.
We also went to the water park for a day which was very expensive- 64 euros for 4 adults and 2 kids. There is a sign that tells you you can't take your own food or drink in but lots of people do (ourselves included) so I can't comment on the prices inside. Although another family went from our apartments that day and had been heard saying it was a rip off! The slides were good fun and we did have a great day after the initial shock of the admission price! There's a great section for the kids with miniature versions of the big slides.
The beach in Kalmaki wasn't great but there are some stunning ones if you go and look for them.
