calangute is overcrowded. it is full of rubbish and the utility services cant cope (but they do try at least). it does, however have some of the best restuarants and bars in north goa. the 'local' pubs are cheap and friendly and a great place to watch the mayhem on the streets. resturants are plentiful and their are a vast variety of cuisines on offer. i never had a poor meal in calangute and i ate in at least 15 resturants. street vendors selling breads and samosa etc. are also good.
calangute beach is poor. head toward the baga end and it gets better...cleaner and less crowded.
for all its faults, calangute is a good place to stay. banks, atm's, essential shops all at hand. well connected with regular cheap buses which serve the main towns and resorts in north goa. think mumbai-on-sea and you get some idea where this busy little hub is coming from!

calungute is definetly a great place to stay, plenty to do. there is alot more to do than candolin where we stayed last time although the restaurants in candolin were slightly nicer.

Having stayed at Candolim being near Calangue was a change. I would say Candolim is more restraunts and nice bars and Calangute is more bars and pubs and i found we tended to snack rather than eat out. From our hotel the walk to the beach was a good 15 minutes not a problem but at candolim your never too far away.

I know I haven't marked Baga that highly, but to be honest what you see is what you get. I quite like it, warts and all. I would prefer to stay somewhere like the Riverside Regency if I ever stayed in the area again.

We liked the Shining Star shack for evening use, but much too busy in the day. I also liked Cafe Del Mar shack, which was a cut above all the others for decor and furnishings. Generally though, I like Baga as a base to travel further afield during the day by scooter, and for it's multitude of good restaurants at night.

Calangute on the whole is very hectic place but everyone is friendly and you dont feel threatened at all, even the constant ' taxi' ' taxi' in your ears is something you get used to as well, great people always ready to sell you a bargain, even strike up a conversation with you, they are naturally interested in westerners and most speak good English, lovely little shops doted around, just got to look around, if you ask taxi drivers to take you to Calangute mall, there is designer shops there when you get dropped off but they are very expensive, instead walk up the main drag and you will find jewellers, cafe, shops you can buy souvenirs, batteries for camera, postcards etc and a very good supermarket which is on the same side as calangute mall, its small but has every day esentials in it, staff very friendly prices very cheap, depends how much you buy but a couple of times we got given a small packet of polos in our bags free when we bought alot, little gestures like that make it all worthwhile, across the road there is an atm, which you do need to have your card to access, there are designers shops on that side too, plus if you keep walking down that stretch of road pas reebok just past st andrews church there is a ' Croc' shop, great prices very friendly staff, will look out whatever you need. all in all loved it and will definately be going back.

The beaches are clean-although a litter dump has appeared near the steps- and now patrolled by lifeguards, still a problem with hawkers although some shacks keep them away. Not much in the way if entertainment apart from a few karaoke bars. The resort still has litter problems but is getting better, still alot of burning going on. Many restaurants offering good cheap food, beware of some of the new ones as they are overpriced for what they offer in terms of quality and quantity,do not buy Stella, stick with non imported brands.

I was right in the hub of Calungute and walking distance to Baga one way and far end of Calungute the pther (or very cheap tuk tuk ride). Beach was about 5 minutes if that. So many places to eat nearby that in 2 weeks I only ate in the same place twice. Lots of places to drink. Buses stopping outside....just great!

Calagute is a very busy small town and like many places in India is very untidy, but having been before I knew what to expect. The beach at Calagute is very busy but there are many quiet beaches just a short taxi ride away.
Calagute is blessed with many cafe's and bars but except for karaoke and the odd group that is where entertainment stops.
This year it has been very quiet for the locals and I think a bit more attention should be made to clear the rubbish up and also to control the beggars which I believe come from out os state, but in general you get what you expect
