Calangute was a good resort to stay, as far as the cleanliness, everywhere we visited (bars/restaurants)were clean enough, it was just the rubish on the roads that seemed a problem.
Entertainment was fine as we were all happy to just have a few beers together, and make our own entertainment.
Beach was brilliant as we used the Dolphin shack, and was waited on hand and foot for two weeks.
I would definitely visit Calangute again, but when we do go back to Goa, we will probably try Candolim.

I know that giving honest low ratings would make it appear we didn't like it in Calangute. However this is not the case. Yes it is manic, dirty and apart from shops, bars and restaurants, there is little entertainment. However I love the place. You can sit in any restaurant or pavement bar and people watch for hours. Some of the food served in the unlikeliest of places, can be excellent. This is north Goa's busiest beach resort/town, and you either love it or loathe it. It is between Candolim and Baga (10 minutes either way), and perfectly central for getting around. Yes, there are tourist bars which many find 'commercial', but we are those tourists, so everywhere we go looking for a deserted beach/ resort, we make it touristy.
Having said that, there are very few bars run by English. All staff and owners are Indian. The only thing English is in their name, ie Red Lion, Public Bar etc.
The beach is busy with domestic tourists who arrive by the bus load, so we rarely use it for sunbathing.
With a scooter (or using local taxi's) you can choose where to go each day.
We will definately return here. Having stayed a number of times in Candolim, Baga, Arpora and Cavellosim, we have always visited Calangute and will continue to do so.

As it was the start of the season the beach was very quiet and other shacks had not yet opened. Which for us was perfect as the wedding photograhs on the beach are amazing.
I will return many times as it is a quiter location if you need to rest and chill, but if you want more entertainment and the hustle and bustle you only have to srtoll down the beach for 20 mins.

Calangute is a busy holiday resort. Litter and mess everywhere. Little is done to keep on top of the rubbish and it definately smells. Taxi drivers are one of the worst trying to charge RS400 for a RS250 fare. There is little entertainment in Goa most is provided by the hotels, but there are many bars and restaurants along the street, although the best food I believe is located in Flortentines - Saligao and Mapusa - Downstairs in the Stomach and the Heera Classic 4th Floor. The beach by the steps is busy and very dirty but the candolim end is very nice, although the tanker which was run aground has caused major problems with the currents and parts of the beach are dangerous.

Rubbish everywhere still but I have visited for many years and know what to expect.
Calangute beach is a mess near the steps with domestic tourists disposing of their litter everywhere, far better beaches further afield.

calangute is situated in an ideal position ,to get to the many attractions goa has to offer, the beaches are fine but swimming can be limeted by the tide it is not possible to snorkel etc due to the murkiness of the water also the waves can be very strong knocking you off your feet and with strong rips, the town itself has many varied restuarents catering for all tastes motorcycles/cars can be hired and there is an abundance of taxis, night life is very limited mostly to bars, not realy anything for children

We preffered to use the beach at candolim as it is cleaner and quieter than calangute, we used bobby's beach shack which had great food and the staff were really nice. Other nice restaurants were Over the flames, east meets west, after seven, roma ital. Cocktails and dreams down tito's lane in baga does the best cocktails and is worth a visit. Overall we liked calangute and would definatly return it's so cheap and easy to get around you can just jump in a tuk tuk and visit baga or candolim.
