Location
We expected 4* accommodation to be much better than the cramped 2 rooms (1 bathroom and 1 kitchen, come dining room, come bedroom). The tiles in both bathroom and kitchen area were cracked with discoloured grouting. Having said that it was a handy location being close to the bus stop and local shopping centre.
We didn't use many of the hotel facilities, choosing to go out most of the time. We would have used the hotel gym(at an additional cost)if we could find it.
Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful whilst others were not. We have enjoyed better accommodation in some 2* hotels.

This apartment hotel is ideally situated in close proximity to shopping, grocery stores, bars/restaurants, with easy access to main roads, as well as the old town/beach. The interior courtyard and sea views are beautiful. The hotel restaurant is attractively located, with a fine menu, served by congenial staff.
Given the type of construction, such as ceramic floors and non-insulated walls, the hotel tends to be a bit noisy. For light sleepers and non-party animals, a room away from the bar area would be advised.
The linens were replaced as needed and the apartment was kept as clean as possible given the fact that the staff only have a broom and a wet mop to work with.
The entertainment was probably fine but being accustomed to smoke-free environments, any evening bar venue in Potugal would be a problem.
Tourists, especially the Spanish, should be careful in applying one's own standards of what is acceptable, when visiting a foreign country. We were totally amazed and delighted by everything we experienced in Portugal and would recommend going there to anyone.
As for the Perola, sure there are newer and more luxurious places to stay, but for the money, it is good value!

Yes there is a smell from bins as you walk past towards the hotel - however this does not linger any where near the hotel. Personally I did not spend my holiday looking at bins. The Supermarket is very handy just opposite the hotel.
Location was good for getting to both parts new and old however we mainly went to old town, which is really good for all ages and all groups.
I really do recommend the Perola and I'm sure we will be visiting there again soon.

I would strongly advise anybody not to visit this hotel as they will be sorely disappointed - I cannot believe the other comments I have read where they had a great time - all I can is they must be used to low rated budget hotels !!
Whilst we generally found the hotel clean and the snack foods adequate the rest left a lot to be desired. The pool whilst ok wasn't big enough - not enough sunbeds to go round and seemed like a hotel that needed a major facelift. The location set behind an underground multi storey car park and a smelly goods area of a Supermarket was disgusting.
We visited other true 4* listed hotels in the area and sampled their entertainment and atmosphere and were truly shocked by the contrast.
We strongly feel let down by first choice and will certainly not be returning to this particular hotel - be warned !

However this became irrlelvant as the perola is an excellent place to say.The bedrooms are huge, with everything you need.We were in 104,which is on the same level as the pool. The pool area was busy at the end of may,it will be a scrap in the summer for beds, however there is a grass/gardens area round the side which is beautiful if u want peace and quiet.
Pool is adequate, pool bar supplies good grub at a reasonable price.
The hotel is sparkling clean, and the staff cant do enough for you.
Entertainment wasnt to bad.The kids took over the karaoke a few nights.Other nights had dancers and singers. Not the greatest, but there was something on everynight.
We took a taxi most nights as we were equidistant between old and new town.
Old town is nice, the strip is a bit repetative, same cheap junk in all the shops.
Dont think id go back to albufeira again, probably head further west.
If you're looking for a clean,friendly hotel.look no further.
