The beach is really nice. Very long with lovely fine sand. Plenty of beach bars for a break. There is lots to do if you walk around and look. The locals are very friendly and helpful.

The resort is apparently 'made made' as an add-on to the nearby Vila Real sta Antonio - which is a old fishing town. The resort has a 'front', and a 'town centre' behind. While there are no old buildings or cultural stuff to see, there is everything else you would expect to find in a middle-size town.
onte Gordo is a quietish resort, with not much in the way of entertainment - ok, no entertainment to be had at all! We found just the one music bar, all the rest being just for food and drinks.
There seemed to be a lot of room when you walked about the place, both at day and night. I dont think it was because of being 'out of season' or anything, i think it it just a quieter destination than somehwere like Albufiera. The beach is vast, with sunbeds/canopies for hire at 10/12 euros a day. There are a number of bars restaraunts actually one the beach, so you dont have to trail too far for refreshments from your sunbed. There is also a good shower/toilet facility right on the beach - which doubles as a Red-cross place for the numerous lifeguards that patrol the area. The resort is quiet flat, and there are large semi-deserted promenades to pedal on - in fact the road itself is under used. We also found it to be quite cheap when compared to other resorts, with wine and sangria to be found at 1 euro a glass. Food was also inexpesive, and of good quality. But, you could make it as dear or as cheap as you wanted!
There is also a new casino on the beach front, but we didnt go in. We thought this was a good value for money holiday. It was a bit of a culture-shock from our ususal destinations, but once you got used to the pace - it was fine. There is a little train that takes you to the border town of Vila Real, which is an ancient place. Here you can get a ferry for next to nowt that will take you across to Ayumente in Spain. Which is also a fishing port/town, worth a visit.
I would go back to the resort and hotel again, but be warned - there isnt a lot to see or do. If you want a quiet and relaxing and cheap(ish) holiday - this place is for you. If you like to 'let your hair down' every night - go elsewhere!

The main resort area was very clean, although the back streets where our hotel was situated were very dirty especially dog mess. The resort was fairly quiet in the evenings, couple of nice bars and restaurants, especially Taj Mahal.

Resort quite quiet, didn't mind this, variety of shops, beach sandy and hot.
Travelled to spain a couple of times on the ferry, taxis and ferry dirt cheap.

Most of Monte Gordo has very poor pavements, and side roads so if you have walking problems beware......I had to buy a walking stick because my hips got very sore.
The beach area is the best I have seen in the Algarve and it is not as windy there as parts of the town.
Eating and boozing are no problems as everything in the area is on the cheap side, a pint and a glass of wine 3.50 euros. A steak meal for 2 is less than 20 euro

We'd read quite a bit about Monte Gordo on the web before going. It sounded just what we wanted - quiet, lots of "mature" people, nice long beach. And the first week lived up to that. When we arrived, the 9th International Veteral Athletic Championships were underway with lots of very old people running up and down the main street which had been turned into a running track for the duration. We didn't see many young people at all and everything seemed to shut around midnight. No wild bars or discos that we noticed.
Monte Gordo has a very artificial feel to it, as though there never was a village there before tourists descended and built lots of high-rise blocks along the sea front. The visitors seemed to be split between British, German, Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish. There was little to do beyond drinking in bars and eating in restaurants. Most of what was on offer food-wise was very samey - burgers, pizzas, steaks. Everywhere offered Portuguese cuisine but few delivered authentic local dishes. The one exception was a little restaurant called Vicius, up a side street off the main pedestrianised area. We went one evening for their Fado night, a wonderful mixture of typical Algarve food and incredible musicianship. The main singer was a woman called Maria Dos Santos whose singing made the hairs on the back of my neck rise although I had no idea what she was singing about. There was a large group of Portuguese at the next table and they wept through most of the performance. Highly recommended.
Our second week there saw a total change. At the eastern end of the resort is a large camping ground. It filled up overnight with thousands of young people. We thought it was for a rock concert but it was for a week long folk festival. The choirs and bands would come into the town in the evenings and busk while the campers filled every available bar and restaurant till you couldn't get a seat. At the other end of Monte Gordo, the annual Harley-Davidson Motorbike Convention came to town. Thousands of big bikes and even bigger hairy bikers and their women roared up and down at all hours. So you'd find yourself at the ice cream parlour wedged between a nurses choir from Lisbon singing away and four Harley owners debating the realtive merits of coconut versus mint chip. Bizarre.
We had rented a car for the fornight and were glad we did. Monte Gordo isn't big - you can walk from one end to the other in 20 minutes - and it didn't have a lot to hold your attention. If you're into sunbathing on the beach, then it's for you: the beach is faultless and we enjoyed a post-breakfast stroll each day. But we had to go further afield to find things of interest. Vila Real is just down the road and the ferry trip across to Spain is fun. We drove to Seville for a weekend and had a great time. We went along the coast to some smaller villages as well as a beautiful drive up the Guadiana River. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip but we both felt when we left that we'd definitely done with Monte Gordo.

The resort was really good, it is all flat and ideal for those that are less mobile. There are no typical British Bars with chips with everything which was ideal.
The prices are very good because of the lack of Brits, I think. and the fact that this resort is popular with the Portugese holiday maker. Holidaymakers are mainly North European and is very clean.
if you are looking for a typical beach holiday this is the place to be, The beach is about 50 metres deep, and goes for as far as the eye can see in either direction. The restaurants along the beach are by far the best places to eat out.
The sand is pure white and very fine. An added bonus is the proximity to Spain and we took a day trip to the Stunning city of Seville, are real treat. My wife will vouch for the quality of towels on sale locally, which are cheap and very well made.
I have already booked to go back next year, but, not to that Hotel.
