One large ancient looking built-in wardrobe only just managed to accomodate all of our clothing. The air conditioning unit was a hole in the wall affair that had to be operated with the door key (so couldnt be left on when you weren't in the room) and when switched on was like a small tractor running.
'Oh my god' I thought - what have we let ourselves in for!
Still, retaining that stiff British upper lip and not wanting to complain we got on with things. Opened up the door to the sun & fresh air and it improved it a bit!
The next initial disappointment was the food - poor choices (quite a Spanish type menu - hey we are in Spain after all!) but what we did eat was tasty and we always found something for us and the children. The food seemed to improve over the fortnight (or were we getting used to it?)
Chinese restaurant was very good too.
Lifts werent too much of a problem for us on the 8th floor as they would often go from 0 up to 8 for the restaurant and we could jump in and go back down to 0 but there were many irate people complaining to the reps as the middle floors were difficult to get lifts to as they would be full by the time they stopped.
Over the next few days we settled in - got use to our room and started to overlook the poorer points. We were having fun, the pools we good (although the beach club pool was nastily cloudy all the time and a few children including my son had eye infections - there seemed to be lots of people visiting the doctor/chemist) the entertainment was good although don't go to BE entertained - you will BE the entertainment! Its mostly audience participation but seems to work and every night we laughed, danced to the club dances and generally had a great time.
The location is superb with stunning views, the beach is gorgeous and the sea is fantastic for swimming and watersports.
All in all, the elements for a wonderful holiday are there, the stunning scenery, good entertainment, good food & plentiful drinks (the hotel put a food suggestion form outside the restaurant to find out what people would like to eat as there had been some complaints so they do seem to be listening to the guests) ok, rooms are not great but you dont really spend much time in them anyway.
Kids clubs were great - the staff friendly, weather beautiful and we met some lovely people and had some great nights. Don't come looking for luxury but if you want all of the above look no further than the San Miguel!!

We ate out at the fish resturant on the beach three times, each meal superb fillet steak was beautiful as was the fish and the pizza was the best ive ever tasted.also had a sunday roast at the happy friar which was nice.and a meal at the chinese which i thought was ok, but hubbys beef was really pink and slimey in his beef curry, we asked if they could could cook it for longer but they didn't understand us and warmed it up again so it was hotter but still as before, anyway hubby couldn't eat it(like i said before he is fussy but i tried it,and i couldn't of eaten it either).
Hotel right by the beach which was lovely ,plenty of watersports ie canoes, sailing, pedelos.
The staff were friendly especially in the western saloon, watch out for hos'e and his slippery nipples also the chocolate huskys our nice.
Enjoyed the entertainment by zorro and co very funny ,but did get a bit samey i think 10 days was just about enough for us.enjoyed boogie nights, but from what members had said,i had expected more than a audience game show.
My kids enjoyed there holiday, and the youngest who is 10 joined in with everything, clubs and games.the older one 14 we hardly saw as she had made lots of friends.
To sum up had a good holiday at the san miguel and would visit again if the food improved.

Well what can I say about the food if you like chips, chips and more chips then you will be fine.I understand and it is a child friendly hotel but, the childrens food was a shambles. The adults food was not much different. If you like to go on holiday to eat a spanish sort of british then you will be fine. I am not saying that it was all bad but, I wish they had a little more spanish food selection.
Spoke to quite a lot of people who had been going for years and they said that the food has got worse and a few said they would be trying somewhere else next year.
The staff were great and very helpful the hotels entertainment team are fantastic and boogie nights was the best everyone joins in and it is wild. Zoro and his team were so funny and really made the holiday they never stopped. The thomson team were a different story they are and were hopeless and lifeless. If Zoro and his team ever left then god help them.
As,for the bar staff they were wonderful and the drink sizes they were in small plastic cups but, with small children about you have to think safety first.
The location was fantastic for us the resort its self is very small and only had three shops so outside of the hotel there was nothing at night. The beach was great and I did go on it a lot only because I like the sound of the sea.
Not saying that we didnt enjoy the holiday we did would we go back no.

The cleaners, bar staff and restaurant staff work real hard and are a credit to the hotel
The 4 Belgian entertainers are what really makes the holiday. That's why we have given 5 stars to the entertainment. If we had to give stars to the Thomsons so called entertainers we wouldn't be able to as there is not an option of posting minus points. They were useless and unhelpful, but as I said Zorro and his mates make up for it. After all you don't really need the Thomsons reps unless you want to buy one of their overpriced excursions. If you go here and want to do a trip, then use the excursion shop across the road, basicaly the same trips but a fraction of the price.
Pool got a bit crowded but still ok. Would we go again? Yes we would and probably will the year after next as we have already booked somwhere else for next year.

Stayed at beach club for second year which i prefer...not so many steps. Yes, the food is a bit repetitive etc. but there's always something and the staff are very efficient - sometimes too efficient! Zorro, Ollie, Natascha & Chris are still fantastic. Kept us amused again! And that's not easy! Jose and tito at western saloon are my heros! And the new girls there were fab too. Didn't need reps , thank god, but claire was excellent at entertaining (hi to her mum, dad and amanda too). Would I go back....absolutely!! But we are a large group and some finding it repetitive after so many years. Think hotel would suffer if Zorro and team were to leave! Been back 10 hours now....and can't wait to return to San Miguel.
