This was our first cruise and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We thought the organisation of the flights, transfers, embarkation, information on board (Cruise News), and dis-embarkation was excellent. We had a deluxe cabin on deck 7 which we thought was well worth the extra money - especially to have a bath and double bed.
We thought the ship was very clean. There was always some sort of maintenance going on, painting, washing, varnishing etc. The only thing that really affected us however was when they washed our window with a power spray at 3.00am. It just so happened we were still sort of awake at that time (been dancing the night away in the disco etc), so perhaps it wouldn't have disturbed us if we were actually asleep.
The food in the Seven Seas (waiter service) was excellent every single night, and the portions were of a manageable size, not heaped on plates. The waiters were very friendly and efficient, so we never had to wait for anything. Also on several evenings, they did a little "impromptu" entertainment where the waiters sang and danced. It was very funny, but obviously a regular thing. We always dressed up for dinner and at no time felt overdressed. A lot of people did, but just as many didn’t, it’s a matter of personal preference.
The food in the Lido cafe was also good, particularly breakfast. I can't comment on evening meals as we always ate in the restaurant. I frequently followed a previous posters advice and got tea from the Lido cafe to take back to the room in the afternoon/evening. However, we found the food in the Pool grill wasn't always up to scratch. They offered the same food several days in a row. And the crepes they had on special one day were quite awful. We didn’t bother to queue up for the Buffet Magnifique as the queue was ridiculous and being on late sitting dinner, felt as if we had just eaten and it was one of the days the sea was a bit rough.
Most of the staff were very pleasant and helpful, particularly the cabin stewards and waiters. The bar staff were keen and efficient and always on hand to take a drinks order and however one or two were a bit miserable, and even surly on occasion.
We thought the evening entertainment was excellent. The entertainment team worked extremely hard and the shows were well rehearsed and very professional. There were also various quizzes and game shows during the day and evening and these were quite amusing but not really our thing. The Captains Dinner was a bit of a palaver, queued up for ages to shake his hand and get a photo which turned out to be awful anyway.
I think the main thing that spoiled our holiday was the weather which was only really sunny on the first and last day, but not much you can do about that.
We went on a couple of excursions (Taste of Madeira and Souk and Fantasia-Agadir), but we didn't really enjoy them that much or feel they were worth the money.
There were a couple of photographers taking photos mainly at meal times and on the Captains Dinner night. We thought all the photos were very expensive. When we hesitated about one in particular, the man in the photo shop said “well, it’s your memories!” which we thought was quite rude.
We thought the drinks were reasonably priced which was good, but although I had plenty of choice (Smirnoff Ice, Woodpecker, and a nice Merlot red wine, there were very few beers/lagers, namely Stella, Budweiser or Boddingtons. We didn't take the all-inclusive drinks package and found this to be a good decision as we only spent half the amount it would have cost.
All-in all we had a great time and would definitely go again, although at a different time and on a different itinerary.
