We did the Jewels of the Med cruise on the Destiny and found it difficult to fault in any way. We had calm sailing for most of the time, just a couple of nights when we could actually feel the ship moving and all that did was just rock us to sleep. Even the thunder storm we sailed through when arriving in Naples just added to the excitement. The ship was contstantly beind cleaned, vacuumed or painted and everytime we docked someone would be out on a trapeze or in a dinghy painting bits of the hull. Our cabin was kept clean and tidy by the wonderful Alina who seemed to work 24 hours a day and still keep smiling.
Our cabin was on deck 7 and was much bigger than we had expected. It was actually a suite with a completely separate bedroom, a sitting room and a bathroom with a full size bath. It was wonderful and really made the holiday special.
We mainly ate in the Lido Restaurant as we loved to eat whilst watching the sun set and the coast line of that day's port recede behind the boat. In both the Lido and the Seven Seas the food was great and the staff attentive and friendly. We didn't see many of the shows but what we did see were excellent, the entertainment staff are endlessly enthusiastic and energetic.
It has been mentioned here several times that the reception staff were not friendly or helpful regarding DIY excursions. I don't know if Thomson have picked up on this and done something about it or if we were just lucky, because we found the reception and destination services staff couldn't do enough for us! There was a talk in the Can Can lounge on the Friday afternoon showing the various ports of call and how they could be explored without going on the organised trips. Ferry and train timetables were available and the staff were incredibly helpful and chatty. The lovely El Mira deserves a special mention, especially as she kept our son company for a while in Barcelona while we visited the duty free shops!
We arrived too late and left too early to explore Palma but our other ports were Palermo, Naples, Ajaccio, Toulon and Barcelona. In Palermo we spent a couple of hours walking round the town. Nice architecture but apart from the Fountain of Shame, noting to get excited about. At Naples we took the trip to Pompeii which was incredible and one of the highlights of the whole holiday. Ajaccio was gorgeous - we took a trip to a tortoise sanctuary which was amazing, but would have been just as happy exploring the town. We arrived in Toulon on August 15th, Napoleon's birthday and a holiday in France, which meant that most of the shops were closed. This was compensated for when the French equivalent of the Red Arrows did a display over the town in the afternoon, some of it took place actually over the top of the Destiny! We did the road train trip around the town and then did a boat trip around the harbour. There was also a craft market in the dock building beside the ship which was great for souvenirs and presents. Finally, Barcelona. The ship docked a long way from the town but a shuttle bus ferried us to and fro. The open topped tour buses are really good, if you don't understand where you are going just ask the guide on board as they are very helpful.
Of course the main test of a hoiday is whether you would do it again. Would we? You bet!
