Service
The food in the Orion Restaurant was great, again with two designated waiters serving each group of tables aswell as a separate wine waiter. I have never seen so many waiters in one restaurant! The food in the Andromeda Buffet was also lovely. A good variety of food that changes every day - every fish dish was fantastic, I don't know what they do with it. Large plates that you can fill with whatever you fancy and that, again, are cleared away quickly by the numerous waiting staff. All of the staff on board were very friendly, always a smile and a greeting as you meet them in passing and happy to help if needed. The Show Team were fun to watch, some great individual singers with lots of energy. Something for the ladies, and gentlemen, of all persuasions even if by some chance their wide variety of musical shows doesn't manage to incorporate your favourite genre, which at least one of them will. All of the entertainers put everything into their performances. The resident piano player we saw in the Delo Bar on several occasions has moved on to a slot at the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai now. These are talented people!
We only had one port changed, which was changed from Palamos to Barcelona along the coast due to anticipated bad weather at Palamos, and we were informed the evening beforehand. Not exactly a disappointment in any case.
Having only read older reviews of the Thomson Dream on my return it sounds like a different ship altogether.

We were pleasantly surprised. On arrival, check in procedure went really smoothly,we were shown to our cabin and was impressed by the size & cleanliness of it.
I cant believe people have complained on the decor etc, we thought it was lovely, yes there were a couple of stains on the carpets on certain decks but nothing to really complain about. We had no trouble with blocked toilets, air conditioning or awful smells.
We couldn't believe the staff onboard, they were all fantastic from our man who cleaned our cabin twice a day, the cleaners around the ship, the waiters and the entertainers.
The food was brilliant, which ever restaurant you wanted to eat at. In the evening we dined at the Orion restaurant with waiter service & six courses every night. It made our holiday feel really special.
The buffet style restaurants were always array with food, & can't believe if anybody couldn't find anything nice to eat there. So what about the plastic plates!!
The onboard entertainment was fine, there was always something going on if you wanted to join in. There were also quiet spots if you wanted to get away from it all!
We also enjoyed the itinery, we did have to change course because of the weather but this wasn't a problem.
I would thoroughly recommend this ship and wouldn't hesitate to sail on her again!

This ship is VASTLY superior in every way, and highly recommended. Yes its not a new ship, but neither are the other Thomson ships. Lets face it, the 'Destiny' and 'Escape' are well past it age wise, and only us brits would dream of paying good money for staying on those ageing tugs!! (Why are we losing all our good ships to Australia and Spain, i.e. Ocean Village 1 & 2 and Island Star, and keeping ancient tired ships!?)
We had an inside cabin on deck 6. The cabins are large by 'Destiny and 'Escape' standards, and even have a fridge and electronic safe at no extra charge. The shower is quite large too, plenty of space for clothes etc as well. I noticed that the outside cabins are slightly larger, with a bigger TV. They only show Sky news, CNN and 2 channels showing movies, so thats not an issue.
The ship was very clean and tidy, and we never encountered the 'smells' that other people have reported, so they must have sorted that out!
The food was very good. We never ate in the Orion restaurant, because we don't like all the fuss and one hour plus it takes to get through all the courses, so can't comment there. The buffet self service restaurants, Sirens and Andromeda were excellent, with plenty of choice on offer, even a pasta bar and whipped self serve ice cream. No problem with the food being too cold either.
Entertainment was OK, and I will have a little moan here. Loved the quizzes and game shows in the Medusa Ballroom. The music shows in the Atlante Theatre became a bit 'samey' and have I have seen them in different guises before on the other Thomson ships. I would like to see more varied acts like they have on the 'Ocean Village', like tribute acts, magic etc. They only have one comedian a week, and on our week it was Maurice Grumbleweed, remember him!? Well, his jokes were ALL early 80's stuff and he sang more than he told jokes, maybe a good thing really, but they could do with getting a fresher, younger comedian, with new jokes!
Yes there was an Air Conditioning problem on our cruise. Our cabin was around 80 degrees, but we managed to sleep OK. It was worse in the Theatre, Ballroom and shopping areas. As you can imagine when there are hundreds of people sat in the lounges, things get a little hot! It became unbearable one night in the theatre, and we were glad to get out.
What annoyed us most, was the fact that it took 3 days before the Captain finally announced there was a problem it, and the engineers were working on it. Anyway, they finally sorted it out on the on the 6th night and the cabin temp dropped to a comfy 70 degrees and it was OK in the lounges etc. On the last night, we got a letter of apology, and a cabin credit of £75 per person for the discomfort! Not bad really, and with 1500 + passengers, quite a costly gesture by Thomson!
All in all, a lovely ship that will get even better after the refit in the autumn. Will definitely go back on the 'Dream' and may try a Caribbean cruise on her next year.
Any questions about this ship and cruise, please feel free to email me: wainyuk@gmail.com I even have the bar prices!

We've sailed on the Thomson Destiny 3 times previously and the Dream is a far more spacious ship. As much as we loved the Destiny it can sometimes feel very busy but it never felt crowded on the Dream, even on the day at sea when the ship was full. We read reviews of people complaining about the decor but we couldn't understand why. Even though it's going for in a re-fit in November its decor is much nicer & more up-to-date than the Destiny.
The staff we can't praise highly enough. As with every Thomson cruise we've been on they were attentive, friendly and always happy to chat to you. We've always loved Thomson entertainment and this year was no exception. The show team were brilliant and there was a variety of shows and something for everyone. The theatre was also very impressive. It's far bigger than the Destiny's theatre and the layout is much better. The entertainment hosts were also brilliant and they work so hard to ensure everyone enjoys their holiday organising quizzes and game shows.
The food was gorgeous in the Orion Restaurant and there was always lots of choice in the 2 buffet restaurants on deck 9 and 11. From reading a lot of reviews people seem to have something against the plastic plates that are used in the buffet restaurants. I really can't see how they affect your holiday in any way and they are there for the same reason drinks are served in plastic glasses, so people can take them out on deck if they wish.
Our cabin was on deck 6 and it was a lot bigger than the cabins we've stayed in on the Destiny. We had no problems with the air conditioning except that when it was warmer outside it was turned up by the housekeeping staff but we simply turned the dial down.
We also never found the mysterious smell everyone talks about. We spoke to a lot of people during the week and only once did people mention that they smelt something. The problem seems to be that people are now going onto the ship and looking for things to complain about but the major problems seem to have been fixed or we found they had. Therefore people are finding tiny things and often ridiculous things to complain about. For instance, we overheard a couple complaining because they could hear water running in the bathroom pipes! And a lady came out of a public toilet cubicle and warned me i might not want to use it because it smelt like someone had used it...yes you!
There were a few problems with the public toilets and a few of them were blocked but after customer services were informed they were fixed within an hour or so.
The only complaint we had was that 3 of the 6 ports of call were changed. We went to Caglairi instead of Tunisia so the boat could fill up on fresh water which didn't really bother us because Caglairi was a beautiful place. Olbia was changed to Ajaccio because of bad weather but again this didn't really bother us because we've been to Olbia before and it's a disappointing port and there's not much there whereas Corsica is a beautiful little island. The only alteration that disappointed us was that we didn't call at Barcelona, instead we went to Tarragona, and although they still ran the trips to Barcelona it would have been nice if they had offered a free or cheaper bus there. Even if we'd have had to pay £10 each we wouldn't have minded but we didn't really want to pay the full price for the trips.
All in all we had a brilliant holiday on the Thomson Dream. We had a few rough nights but there's nothing Thomson can do about the weather and the ship coped with the waves a lot better than the Destiny did. Reviews of the ship still seem to be very mixed but the majority of people we spoke to were very happy with their holiday and one couple in particular who had been on 3 cruises a year for the last 10 years or so said that their holiday on the Dream was far better than many cruises where they had paid over £2000 each. Personally i think it has a lot to do with what you're expecting. We saw loads of people coming on looking for problems and once they'd found something small they decided to find as many problems as they can. I'd rather enjoy my holiday than find small things to pick at.

There are so many faults with the ship that itineraries seem to be constantly changing and ports of call regularly missed out. We missed our trip to Barcelona because they discovered a crack in a water tank which had to be repaired to stop the ship leaning over any more. It had been leaning for a few days and this had become very obvious when water was overflowing from the pool on one side of the deck. After repair it was leaning the other way and I'm not sure it was sorted out before we got back to Palma.
We had no problems in our cabin but other passengers did have blocked drains etc. The smell is still there, the water supply and air conditioning erratic. The ship can seem very crowded and the Captain has to keep coming up with excuses for what appear to be major structural faults. The ship has been involved in an accident earlier in the year and has also had engine problems for some time from the information on the web. The ship should not be in service this year as it is to be refitted at the end of the season.
Why it has been used as Thomson's fantastic new ship is beyond me. The reputation that company has built up has been damaged greatly by this mess but they are not interested at all and do not seem to appreciate that people book the cruise because they want to visit the ports of call. If you are sent to a different hotel compensation is offered. Our worst day was the extra day we had crowded like sardines on board when we should have been walking around Barcelona. Seeing families with their young sons proudly wearong Barcelona FC or Spain football shirts and being so disappointed showed how important that particular visit was.
The only good thing is the staff who are all fantastic and food in the 'Orion' waiter service restaurant is great as well. Felt as if I was back in a school canteen in self service restaurants as they are very badly designed. Staff work very hard to keep the ship clean and we couldn't complain though it would have been nice to have matching, unstained bathhroom fittings. Couldn't recommend it but be ready for anythinng if you go!
