piriton does work. I went through a couple of years when I used to come out in a rash. Once you take piriton it dies down quickly.

Avoid any oil based sun protection, I find a spray lotion best as it lets the skin breath a bit.

I also use an antihistamine cream, very cheap from the chemist in the UK but extortionate in the Caribbean.

Try to be either in the water or in the shade and protect the bits that come out in a rash when walking about with cotton fabrics that absorb sweat. If you don't have anything else, cover yourself with a towel.

You could ask your GP about the use of steroids, in tablet or cream form for extreme rashes.

My friend suffers really badly with prickly heat and the last two holidays she has used Malibu dry oil spray and has not had a reaction.

i sympathise with you, i to suffer from extreme urticaria only mine is with the cold. i can be in 100 plus but if a slight breeze that is enough to make me look like i fallen and rolled around in stinging nettles.
i used to take 6 piriton a day (luckily they don't make me drowsy).
speak to your doctor. for the last 2 yrs i have been taking a treatment called telfast 180mg, this is only 1 tablet a day. this tablet is specifically for the treatment of urticaria. touch wood i have had no problems since taking this.

If you find a remedy that works - let me know!

I have suffered for years with this - so bad that I have just had my first holiday abroad in 4 years because I just can't stand the itching and feeling that my skin is on fire.

It was just as bad this time. I've lost count of the different treatments I've tried.

I usually end up in tears and just stay in with the air conditioning on while the rest of the family are out.

So you can see I'm not looking to book up abroad for next year!

hi I have stopped getting the rash now.I always covered up as soon as it started, but i used to find that once it started i sufferd all holiday. i have found if i prepare my skin for the heat with a few short sun bed sessions before i go and then stick to a high factor lotion (no lower than 25 even at the end of the holiday).I can actually see a slight tan at the end now.
A little sun often is my tip.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I didnt realise it was such a common comlpaint. I got some boots equivilent to piriton today. They said it was the same as piriton. Does anyone have any knowledge of this?
It usually starts on my back as prickly heat but last time it started on my arms after only 2 days in the sun and it wasnt even that hot. Never mind. It just itched like hell though!lol!! I'll ask at the pharmecy next time about the cream aswell. Thanks again.

micky, have you considered that you may be allergic to sun cream? I can't remember the exact explanation for all of this but is has something to do with one of the blocks for one of the UVA types that virtually all manufacturers put in their creams/lotions. I wish I could remember the exact explanation for you but basically this ingredient causes the rays to react with your cream and bring you out in that horrible itchy rash. There are some special sun creams available but they are horrendously expensive. Maybe a search on google or similar will find what I am trying to tell you although your local pharmacist will probably be sufficiently informed to be able to advise you properly.

I went to Cornwall in August and didn't put suncream on and sat in the shade to try out that theory but it still came out on me.

I've just had enough now - have told Hubby I'm only going to cold places in future!!

I've found a few urticaria websites for you. I know the misery it can cause, my Daughter often breaks out in hives when she's been in contact with dogs. Don't confuse urticaria with prickly heat.

Thanks for the link to those sites, it was really interesting to read about it. It deffinately isnt prickly heat, I could live with that. I had a think today though of possible links to changes that we have had had and for the past 3 holidays I have used No Ad sun cream, so Ill use something else next time. Also Ill stuck up on anti histermines and allergy creams. Great fun!!

Hi there
I have recently returned form a 2 week hol in Rhodes and I am glad to say I had no rash the whole time I was there. This is the first time in 10 years!! :P

I saw my doctor before I went who gave me Telfast antihistamines and a short course of steroids (just one a day) I also used the Simple range of sun lotion/aftersun/shampoo and body wash. Success I will definitely do the same next year

Thats great Claremcc. Im starting to get nervous now about the rash as were going to Cuba in 2 weeks and I dont want to spend my whole time under a tree. I got some ambre solare sun cream (never tried it before) so Ill give that a go (unless anyone knows if this causes a reaction) but maybe Ill try the simple range like you used Clare. Where did you get it from?

Hi micky

I got all my lotions and potions from boots and savers.
I would definitely recommend using the simple range as it is unperfumed and ideal for sensitive skin.
I rekon it's a little dearer than other brands but well worth the money.

I often get a really bad heat rash across my chest on holiday (not what you want when wearing strappy tops etc.) and for the last 2 years I have taken Zirtek for a week prior to going on holiday and then while I am away. It seems to have helped immensely.

I suffer terribly with heat rash too, but for the past 2 years I found that if I have an injection for hayfever from my Dr before I go, it doesn't affect me half as bad.

I also find that it is worse when I go on boat trips (with the breeze) unless I wear a tshirt all day.

well just got back from Cuba and I took piriton every day and used the simple suncare range as recommended and I was fine. Not an ounce of urticaria in sight :D
