Just a quick comment as just got back and totally kn******erd.

We went down to Candolim beach Saturday morning ( I think :que sense of time gone out the window) It was like it had been hit by a hurricane, the majority of shacks had been flattened, there was wood and fridges all over the place.
We ( thats me the wife and 2 boys) went over the shack we had used previously. They informed us that they had a licence but were allowed only 5 sets of sunbeds, all other shacks were to be demolished ! so we sat down for a drink to watch the goings on.

Now, I don't want to comment about the rights and wherefores regards the licences and back handers etc as Its their way of working and I'm an outsider.
HOWEVER
We found it pretty intimidating to be sat having a drink at 10:30 in the morning to see approaching us approx 20 Police carrying their sticks and another approx 50 or more mob of men carrying machetes knives etc.
They walked past/through our shack (only for the police to stop and grab some free drinks from the fridge) and then on to the next door shack. The "wrecking squad" then proceeded to lay into the next door shack whilst there were still customers in there having a drink ! luckily they were satisfied in just wrecking the rear and tearing down the toilets leaving the main structure in place.

This was pretty scary and went a long way to taint an otherwise good 2 weeks (more of that later)
Great PR for the police to do their dirty business in front of their wage paying tourists I think :que
I should have some photos I could post if its thought appropriate ( official police business and all that )

Cheers

This has really got me wondering what we can expect next season, if the police are tearing down the licenced shacks before the end of the season and not letting the owners take them apart peacefully and safely, to ensure that they can be reused.

Will there be any shacks next season?

When we went in November half the shacks werent built because of the hassle with the licences, now they are being ripped down early.
Miccie, as you say, what should we expect next season :que

The one common factor regarding the vast majority of visitors to Goa is the beach shacks. Almost everyone uses them. This present purge following the scandelous revelations regarding the recent murder, corruption claims, and the enourmous drug problem, is supposed to divert the worlds attention from the sleezy side of Goa, and of course it will have the reverse effect. If the shacks are not up and running next season, with adequate sun beds, by the start of November, it really will be the last nail in the Goan Tourism coffin, and I for one, will make my visit next December, my last one Alan

Pedros shack at Calangute beach is still up and running. Melonies has gone and Johnnys has a make shift shack, takes his tables and beds in at night, still serving food and still has his jet skis. Rudys and Aggies are still operating with fewer beds and still serving food. All shacks there still have their massage girls.

Johnys, along with Aggies, are two of the original shacks, I remember years ago there was nothing after Aggies till you got to Candolim. Johney has also his Jet Skis and a big Parasailing boat, and if they are even targeting him, things must be pretty bad, as he has a lot of "friends" in high places. It looks as if the bullyboys in the police have been given permission to do whatever they please. Sad days indeed for poor old Goa. Whatever comes of all this, I cant see it ever recovering, as far as the U.K. tourists are concerned. Alan

Hi all
Does anyone know if the beach shacks in the south have been affected at all ?

I had a phone call from cocopop last week and she told me that there is no problem with the shacks down south, but that could change next year with everybody going south and spoiling it for me.

We`l soon see when the season starts again, i think the vast majority of people have a favourite shack and what helps make our minds up to go back year after year.
If there not up next season would it be a factor in your holiday booking ?
it would be in mine :(

I think the majority of us would have to say yes to that question, it would play a part in our decision.

It appears from the posts so far that the shacks being targetted are on the CCB strip, does anyone know of any action against those on the beaches further north, and for that matter in the south?

There's also the unknown of what might happen around Candolim when they start trying to move the River Princess away. With all the talk about cleaning up the illegal shacks and the rubbish. Not much ever gets said about the RP and the effects that it might have on the coast around Candolim.

Who knows?

I really feel for the shack owners who have had everything smashed up by the police. My friend at Morjim only opened 2 seasons ago and took out a loan to fund the business venture. This season was so poor that he was barely meeting the loan repayments never mind making a profit. If the police destroyed his shack and sunbeds theres no way he has the cash to replace them for next season so wouldn't be able to reopenand he's signed a 5 year lease on the plot. I suppose he's not the only one in that situation either.
