someone at Manchester did not know what they were talking about I'm afraid. Unfortunately you would have had them confiscated if they had been found.
this page from HM Revenue and Customs too quickly could easily miss the exceptions at the bottom of the page and intepret it as being able to take 3200 cigarettes into the country.
Nick- your thread may have helped future holidaymakers to Bulgaria avoid having cigarettes confiscated.
I have to say that though that anyone reading Nick- your thread may have helped future holidaymakers to Bulgaria avoid having cigarettes confiscated.
How come then, you can bring 1000's back from other EU states like france, holland etc etc but Bulgaria (which is an EU member) is only 200?
b) For travellers returning from one of the Member States that joined the EU on 1 January 2007 on THIS website it is explained.
It is to do with taxation levels on cigarettes sold in Bulgaria, and it's not just the UK imposing this limit, nor is it in only respect of Bulgaria.
Other EU states have their own rules too. For example a little known but much breached limit is the one the French have imposed on imports to France from other EU States - 1000 cigarettes.

Is Bulgaria in the EU or no? I was told by a Travel Agent it would be January 2009 before they were in the EU.
Same thing happened to us at Aberdeen Airport, told we couldn't buy any but could take 3200 each back from Bulgaria.
After much debate on the "Beach Bulgaria forum" I decided to phone Customs & Excise and here it "straight from the horses mouth" so to speak. Was told under no circumstances should we have been denied buying our duty free at aberdeen and our limit was 200 back in from Bulgaria.
Good job i only tok 200 back NOT
Hope this helps

Bulgaria joined the European Union 1st Jan 2007 but will not start to use the Euro until at least 2010.
thanks.
You can be pretty sure that any you see outside of an airport shop will be fake and likely to contain toxic additives.
You definately can't get Golden Virginia in the resort. That is what my husband smokes and he couldn't get the real tobacco anywhere. He ended up smoking cigarettes.
try the local brand tobacco
cheers
there is a kiosk across the main road on the crossing near kuban hotel sells english brands cant vouch for quality as i am a non smoker
Can guarantee they will be fakes.
Peter
Hi, Like I have said many times, take a pouch with you and compare the colours, you will find the pouches a much darker shade. It is all fake. Tonyt
So all the shops sell fakes too ?
The answer to do the shops sell fakes too is YES. You have to remember a lot of these shops are supplied by the same people who supply the stalls and are mostly on short term season lets ( or so I am led to believe ).
Just back from Sunny Beach last weekend and there was Golden Virginia at the duty free in Bourgas airport. Was a 10 pouch pack (don't know how many ounces per pack) for 96 lev/48 euro/£35. There was no L&B or Regal, only Superkings and B&H but managed to get 400 L&B on the flight home for 52 lev per 200. Nothing wrong with the L&B either and they are def not fakes.
Hi Malcy, Didn't mean airport shop. Was talking about shops /stalls in resort.

2010 at the very earliest.
