A link to the prices in different countries http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/bargains-and-rip-offs/travel/article.html?in_article_id=499309&in_page_id=1093

Turkey is dearer than spain, greece, italy and even jamaica. Spain is about half the price of turkey. I like turkey myself but I take the friendly banter with a pinch of salt, salesmen are salesmen. ;) you hear lots of tales about these friendly waiters and how they get sent prezzies from foriegn women who are very overweight or much older or not nice looking so you need to take it with pinch of salt.

I find your post quite offensive, to be honest, groovybaby. For one thing, I'm not some single woman gullible enough to be swept off her feet by some smooth-talking waiter. I'm a married mother-of-two and when I say we've made genuine friends in Turkey, I'm talking about my whole family - husband, son and daughter. The friends we have made haven't asked us for a penny - quite the opposite, in fact. Please don't judge everyone by your own standards.

What you are talking about groovybaby is completely different from making friends with people.

hey blondiescot, no offence intended I was just saying how turkey is now dearer than many other countrys for one thing and that friendly banter with waiters is all it is, friendly banter :cheers I'm not talking about familys, thats different, :que what I mean is that waiters and barmen and shopkeepers in turkey are friendly to holidaymakers as its all part of the business. be nice to holidaymakers and they eat in your restaraunt, bar or buy from your shop. I am friendly with a few turks but i dont kid myself and believe they see me as a real friend, i am a tourist thats all. I grant you that turks know how to turn on the old charm and they call everyone there friend, but come on, they do it to everyone

the girls or elderly ladys who get swept off their feet by waiters enjoy the attention, then soon as they go home the waiters say the same things to the next busload of women :tongue i dont know why women go all funny over foriegn waiters anyway they dont do it over here. it must be coz theyre on holiday or something but i think its good for some of these lasses to have a bit of banter on holidays and the waiters know that the women prob get not much flattery at home from fellas, thats why the waiters pull out all stops with the ordinary lasses or the older ladys, they know it will make their days ;) I have seen some right stunners and eye candy on holiday in turkey and the waiters dont flirt with them like they do the others. :think

Well I am late forties - so could probably be classed as an older ordinary lass !! I go with a female friend and take the banter for what it is - banter.

I am quite happy that Turks are friendly - why would I want to go on holiday to meet surly, rude people?? I am under no illusions about anything- I just want to be treated pleasantly when I am on holiday and I found happened in Turkey, which is why I am going back in September.

I am not bothered if Turkey is more expensive than Spain or anywhere else - I have had dozens of holidays over the years to Spain/Balearics/Canaries, but I won't be back. I would much rather holiday somewhere I know I will enjoy, where I will get service with a smile, good food, and a holiday that for me in every way represents much better value than many other places.

Well I am with you 100% groovybaby .

People make money in resorts in all countries but most of them in Turkey

Interesting post , unless the OP is really Alan Wicker or Judith Charmers , bit rich of them saying quote 'aren't as friendly as'
A lot of people, esp on Holiday forum sites make sweeping statements of the country they visit every year :think If they spend every year holidaying in their fav country they CANNOT compare it with others.
If a poster says that in their opinion that Turkey is nicer than ... Spain/Cyprus etc which they themselves has been fairly recently, that is understandable.

We have all seen the words '... best food / beach in the world' :duh

Ps will be returning to Turkey this year , they do Ai very well , but as I have not been every where in the world , will not declare that Turkish Ai is the very very best in the whole wide world :rofl

there are very valid points on both sides of this discussion, groovybaby you have a good idea of what goes on in some turkish resorts, and beleive me in one particular resort it is on an industrial scale. As ive posted before we travelled with a english /turk cypriot one year to this resort and he understood everything that was being said he was disgusted that SOME turks treated tourists with such contempt.I have travelled throughout most of the touristy places now bar alanya, side etc and there is quite a difference in attitude between some resorts.Sadly the old cynic in me has come to the conclusion that most resort workers turkish or kurdish want something from you,be it your custom,a tshirt, aphone etc etc when you stay out there for more than a couple of weeks it becomes obvious the ex -pats can be as bad .there is good and bad and my expeirences are based on my time in one area ,i have seen and heard things that you couldnt make up.The turkish people are hospitable and friendly but please lets get this into perspective they are no better or worse on the whole than any other nation.Enjoy your hols, enjoy the wonderful service, humour, banter, food and all the other wonderful things turkey has to offer but dont be too taken in by some of the charm,a lot of it im sorry to say can be false

blondiescot you say you travel with your husband and family, the attitude towards families and women on their couldnt be more different in some places as i have learned to my cost. Some of the less educated waiters from more traditional areas of turkey actually believe that women travel to certain a(reas of the country to bag a turkish man and therefore fair game.

I would say that this thread has veered :offtop It would be more helpful to people who are looking for the price of things in Turkey if we stuck to 'Cost of Turkey this year'- :whoops I sound like a mod!

I'm only too well aware of that, thanks, idris elba - I just hate it when some people assume that, because you're female and holidaying in Turkey, you must be after some Turkish male totty!

Thanks shirley h, I agree that the topic is going off at a tangent. Can we stick to the title 'Cost of Turkey this year' please for the benefit of other members.

Thanks,

Darren

It certainly has gone completely off topic.

I just want to say to Wallbash though, first, if you are going to quote me can you please do it properly, you have cut some of the words out so the quote makes no sense at all!

Second, you have no idea which countries I have or haven't visited! For your information I have visited at least 18 different countries that I can think of off the top of my head, maybe more if I sat down and listed them. Of all those countries I have found the people in Turkey to be the friendliest. I am certainly not the only one of that opinion.

My cut and paste was succinct and drew the correct response.
And therefore made perfect sense.

You may well have visited 18 plus countries but until you have seen them all,
suggesting that Turkey is the friendliest is still and will remain a sweeping statement.

Can we end this now please and stick to the original topic.

Thanks,

Darren

You didn't just cut and paste, you took some words out. It changes what I said and no only is it not a quote any more it is not a correct English sentence - How can it make sense! And you actually got no response from anyone else.

If I have found Turkish people the friendliest out of all the places I have visited I am just stating a fact. Why do have a problem with that???

For what it is worth, we were out in Altinkum for two weeks at the end of February, naturally, a lot of restaurants were closed for the winter. Those who were open were as welcoming and sociable as what they are when tourists are about. I agree with you Kedi, the people of Turkey are a warm and welcoming race of people, a lot of Brits could learn a valuable lesson from their culture. To make a friend of a Turk, is to make a friend for life. To keep on topic, Turkey is only as expensive as YOU want it to be.

Same as anywhere mate .....the true value of a holiday is how much you enjoy yourself ....as a first time visitor to Turkey I am really looking forward to meeting people who have a smile on the face & are welcoming ...ths is what I found in Bulgaria for the last 8 yrs ....by the way the pals we made in Varna are pals for life British, Bulgarian & other nationalities...as far as I'm concerened I stopped going to Spain in 2001 (Salou) because of the attitude of the spanish it changed for the worse ....went to BG & they were really glad to have tourists in their land ....from what I have read Turkey is the same & I have a Turkish pal here in Kilmarnock & he says We will love it ....the only thing that has bothered me is reading when going SC the apt owners can go in huff if you don't eat in their place ....we go sc because we love the freedom of eating different places & meeting different people ....I will be going to the supermarket for the breakfast stuff & will cook everyday & we will snack during day ...I hate getting ripped off so if the drinks crisps & icecream is too expensive I will get it at the supermarket & take it too the poolside I trust there is no law against this on a SC holiday ?

cheers Stevie

Stevie,

You will find that most SC apartments do have a rule that you cannot take your own food and drink to the pool. Of course there is nothing to stop you nipping back to your apartment for a quick drink or a snack.

I have never found any apartment owners getting huffy about us eating elsewhere, although I did find it once at a hotel in Bitez.

I hope you have a very enjoyable 1st trip to Turkey, I too am sure you will love it :)

Thanks Kedi

Yes I have to say we are all very excited about going to Turkey :D
