Just a word of warning when loading these currency cards,
the one we bought was a cash passport card from co-op travel, you
load it with different currencies, normally for us £ sterling.Euro's or
$ US dollars.
We decided to load it with £ sterling,so we loaded £1,000 then they
charged 2% charge on it, so had to pay £20 extra.
I used it at a atm in Calis Beach, charged £1.50p each time I used
the atm.
On top of that was given 2.19T/lira to £ sterling.
The rate at the time for cash £ notes in the hotel, shops etc was
2.35T/lira to £ sterling.
So got ripped off at co-op with 2% commision,
Ripped off at atm with £.50 per transaction,
Ripped off with exchange rate.
I would say take £ notes, get a safety deposit box, ( You need one
anyway for passport, documents etc ) At the moment exchange rate
good here,so take some lira with you.
I find it risky hoping that you get a good rate when you get there,I
like to have plenty already exchanged.
There are a lot of firms doing the cash passport.
There is no commision if you load euro's or US $ on cash card, but I
find Turkey likes the £ currency better.
was offered 2.54 in the post office today, was just gona take English notes and change it over there but there is no saying it's gona be the same rate in july when we go.
Its your call mate a wee gamble
the highest 2.49 to £.
I have plenty, even some left from last september 2010,
when the rate in the resort was down to 2.35 to £.
I have some left what I got out of atm 2.19 to £.
This why I'm thinking of getting a stack while the rates good.
Another way to do it,take plenty English money with you,has
well has a load of T/lira.
If the T/lira is really high change your English notes,if not use
the lira.
Whats good of having it in the bank in England, interest rates
are crap.
The lira will keep for another holiday.
M&S are offering 2.552 today! gonna get me some!
I did look at M & S it said you needed a M & S card to order online
Yes also £5 delivery on £500 or less,so buy £501 to get free delivery
hey, can anyone tell me what the rate is at the mo, in uk it is 2.55 though when im on hurriyet it states the rate in turkey as being 2.64, is this correct? usually during peak season the rate is lower, i dont recall it being this high for several years now!when me n hubby were in hatay in march we were getting just under 2.50!thanks
Hi aam there has always been a difference of 9 or 10 Kurus between the UK and Turkey. We've just returned from Altinkum and we got 2.58 on friday, so what you've read in hurriyet would be correct but you would naturally shop around your resort for the best deal !!
hurriyet are more than likely showing the bank rates and not the actual tourist exchange rate - the bank takes their cut first!! x
Hi we are going to turkey for the first time this summer ,i was wondering if its best to change english money in icmeler or exchange it here before we go.I am also told you can use english notes etc in shops and restaurants, can anyone shed any light on this and what is the best thing to do ?
We normally take a small amount of Turkish Lira with us just to tide us over for the first day or so, and change the rest of our money there, as you get a better rate of exchange in the resort. You will find that you get the best rates in the little mini markets, etc, rather than the official change offices - just ask what rate they're offering that day. Most of the bars and restaurants will also change your money for you - again, just ask what rate they will give you.
Thanks blondiescot your help is much appreciated
Having been on another Turkey related forum, people have been getting as much as 2.63 out there to-day. Riversider, exchange rates are posted on boards outside exchange shops so shop around first, Jewellers are favourite.
They were giving 2.49T/lira friday.
M & S store I have to go about 10mls e-way to get the good rate,don't save
anything.
I hope the rate goes even higher, because the last 2 years when we have gone
it has gone down, July 2009 was 2.45T/lira September 2010 was 2.35T/lira in
the resort.
So I will give it another week to see if it goes up anymore,I've already got a
good amount, but its always nice to have it.
Any one else had this problem? Might be worth bearing in mind when you get your currency though.
Just to make you aware thatnone of the cash machines in Gumbet are working, and haven't been for quite some time now. I have been told that it is because the belediye (council) is demanding rents for these which the banks are refusing to pay. They are also said to be building a central point for all ATMs in Gumbet but work on thst seems to have stopped.
we were told some notes are not accepted when we were there at Easter as i handed a 10tlr for a news paper was told it was out of date i pointed out that i was given it the day before by you ( bloke serving me ) when i changed my money he remembered me getting money changed and lucky enough he swapped it for me . We only took English money with us . This was in Marmaris .
Everywhere was giving 2.50 to the £ when we returned Monday. Only place we found not taking sterling was Azda supermarket in Hisaronu.
