Personally I would not buy travellers cheques, you get charged for buying them,
then you are charged commission when changing them.
I would say that you are better taking sterling, get a safety deposit box at hotel,
keep your money safe, you will proberly be having a safe anyway for your passport's,
travel documents etc.
M & Spencers were offering 2.524T/Lira to £ sterling today on line.
When buying online you will be charged a delivery fee, unless you get a big amount,
then its free delivery.
The exchange rate is very good at the moment, some people say get small amount
here in U/K,then change rest in resort.
But we don't go while september, so have been getting good rates here ready, because
last 2 years we have found that exchange rate goes down in resort.

thanks for that info, i was getting a safe anyway but u hear stories of safes getting broken into and atm machines not working so thought safest bet, travelers cheques but ur rite the commission on buying and exchanging them can be quite costly, have got £100 yesterday from thomsons and got 2.50 so not to bad,
 Thanks

I'll be buying some more Lira this weekend, the rate seems to have settled around the 2.6 mark so seems a good time to buy.

I got some 400 Lira from Tesco at the end of January and got 2.4.
So I may have to top that up to 1,000 Lira and then just another 1,000 and I'll be ready for hols in September... it can't come quick enough now :)

I just got 2.519 from Tesco today but might have a look at M&S tomorrow as their's seems to be better :)

I was in Marmaris this time last year and was getting 2.25 in resort so i'm happy :D :tup

Can anybody advise if there is anywhere to change travellers cheques in
Turunc or would we be better off taking stirling. Other half doesn't like the idea of carrying all that cash but I'm worried we may have problems changing the cheques or will get a poor rate. Any help greatly appreciated.

Slightly disagree

Check your bank, if you have a Lloyds TSB account Cheques ordered online are free you only pay commission if ordered in person at the branch. When in Turkey change the cheques at small supermarkets you get the same rate as cash.

I take 50% of my money in cheques as a precaution and its not cost me a penny yet.

I've decided to take 1,000 in Turkish Lira and around 500 in English money. Been working my backside off doing lots of disco's to get spending money but all sorted now, just a few more to do. Should have around 2,200 Lira for 2 of us for 2 weeks so hopefully it should be plenty enough...

Not til September but it can't come quick enough now :cheers

Hi Dave - thanks for your reply - I also have never had any trouble in exchanging travellers cheques in Turkey but must admit have gone to larger resorts ie Icmeler, Side etc - I am just a bit worried that because Turunc is quite a small place it will be harder to exchange the cheques. Do you have any personal experience of Turunc yourself?

I've finally mad a decision, going to take 400 Lira (which I already have) and the rest in GBP's as I'm told the Turks like English money. Apparently you can barter really easily with English money, especially at the markets.

So, 400 Lira and 700 pounds - should be ok for 2 weeks for 2 of us. Will also take my ATM card just in case funds dry up.

I usually take £100 in lira to cover for first day and then the rest in stirling!

You get a better exchange rate by far over there than here!

Yes I've been hearing that a lot regarding better exchange rates in Turkey.
Am really, really looking forward to it now as I haven't been 'away' since 2007 so am ready for a holiday abroad :sun2
