Hi Jessop,
The cabin pressure has very little to do with the size of the aircraft - all passenger airlines have to have pressurised cabins and the safety standards don't usually vary with the size of aircraft but most airlines allow it to drop below 1 atmosphere pressure (ie what it is at ground level) because of the cost involved in maintaining air pressure and to reduce the stresses on the fabric of the aircraft.
I suspect that the length of the flight and the cruising altitude are more important than size of aircraft. The higher the cruising altitude the greater the differential between the internal and external pressure and the more pressure on the fabric of the aircraft if the internal pressure is kept at 1atmos and the greater the likelihood of air 'leaking' away through any imperfect seals etc. And I suspect the fuel costs involved in maintaining pressure increase the longer and higher the flight and hence the incentive to allow pressure to fall too. Nearly all my flying with BA is on flights of less than 90mins and the actual time spent at 34,000 ft is negligible compared to the 5 hour charter flight to the Gambia which gave me the most trouble and this alone might account for why I find flying BA more comfortable.

You must be right. We don't have a problem when we fly from Manchester
To Dublin. It's only a 30 minute or so flight and doesn't reach 34.000 feet
For any length of time if at all.The worst problem we had was on descent in America after a 7 hour flight. Now that was really painful.I've not been able to contact my pilot friend but I suspect he'd tell me more or less the same.As I said previously, ear planes work for us.Hope you all have good flights and happy hols.
Worst case of popping ears I've had was back in february when DH and I were flying back from Faro to Luton. I usually find that swallowing/yawning is enough to stop ears popping, unfortunately in february I had a cold. Now that is evil It was bad enough that I had pain across my forehead which DH helped by massaging the sorest spot but the pain was bad enough to make my eyes water. Stupid me had forgotten to pack the Vicks Inhaler thing.
you can get ear plug things now to use on planes. It stops the amount of noise and the pressure. They are about 6 pounds and can get them at places like boots or some super markets. Called ear planes! they r only small as well and see thro so they r quite secretive!
I used those ear planes but I have quite small ears and they were tight on me, no use for a baby!!!!
I use ear plugs, but find them really uncomfortable.
hi everyone i have been told that when you are in the plane your ears keep popping is this true if so how do you stop it.
Wrigley's chewing gum
Might not be the greatest description of what I do, but it works for me.
I was once told that holding 2 plastic drinking cups over your ears also works, but I tried it and it didn't work, I just looked a right prat
I got mine from boots ive not tried them myself yet as i dont go on holiday till september.

sucking a boiled sweet on take off and landing works for me.
Chewing gum and lots of yawning eases the pressure a little.
Boiled sweets everytime for us
Yes i agree lots of yawning always relieves alot of the pressure. But my ears only hurt sometimes.I think it depends on the steepness of the decent.
I find I have very painful ears when we go to Paphos, the descent seems quite steep. To overcome this, I now take ibrufen about an hour before descent and a dose of sudafed! I dont have the same problem on the return journey.
I'm totally the opposite at Paphos, it's one landing that doesn't bother me

I used to get terrible earache for days after flying, but now don't suffer at all. I also use them on my son, i don't know if he would suffer without them , but i don't take the chance.
Hi I have been reading this topic and i am thinking of buying the earplane things from boots because they sound really good, but they are not for me they are for my boyfriend who suffers realy badly but not just from his ears popping, when we take off and land he gets a really severe migraine-like pain in his head all the way down one side of his face and i wondered if anyone knows why this happens and if these earplanes will stop this aswell? xx
I am normally in terrible pain on descent,so much it brings tears to my eyes, so I bought Earplanes.
I put them in before we took off and kept them in until the plane reached it`s maximum height, like the pack says, then I put them back in about 30 minutes before landing, and kept them in until the cabin door was opened.
I only had a mild pain on going but nothing at all on the way back.
It was definitely £5 well spent for me! As usually I`m left deaf for hours afterwards, but really, this time there were no effects at all.
