Hi nuttynet ... the surcharge statement was added to their website on 7 January and referred to any bookings made before the end of January.

the cost of fuel is shocking

i work in the freight industry, fior airfreight the surcharge is nearly 0.90 per kilo :(

I recently heard that some airlines are charging you extra because the price of oil and petrol has went up.... i was wondering if this will affect me? im flying with direct holidays and fly out this wednesday. An answer before then would be greatly appreciated

Gabba_NL,

Shouldn't effect you. You'd have known about it by now! You'll probably find you've already paid a fuel suppliment, at the time of booking the holiday.

I booked it sept 2007 though i spoke with them and they said no as fuel supplement was included so thats good enough for me

i wonder if anybody can enlighten me to this rumour i have heard , people being asked to pay a fuel surcharge as they arrive at the airport for booking in . anby truth to this is it happening on all holiday flights . thank you flights

petaraven,

First I've heard of it and I'd be very surprised if it was true. Which airline have your heard this for? If you've been told prior to a flight that you must pay a fuel supliment, but haven't then I can see it applying, but it won't just be sprung on you at the airport like that.

My daughter got a letter this morning from her holiday company saying if she didn't pay 2 x £18 fuel surcharges before her holiday date, she may be refused boarding on the day of her holiday

I'm booked to go on the exact same holiday but haven't received a letter (yet)

Don't know how they get away with it

Which airline are you flying with John?

You should all check with ABTA that your tour operator has been given permission by them to surcharge. We were being charged by Aegean Flights (Part of Holidays 4u) on a BMI flight, but they'd only been authorised by ABTA to surcharge for Onur Air flights (who we were originally due to fly with). I pointed this out to Aegean Flights and my surcharges were promptly overturned.

I'll try to find the link to the appropriate page on the ABTA website which gives you the list of tour operators authorised to surcharge.

We are flying with Onur Air out of Luton on the 10th September

Daughter booked with Jetline Travel and I booked with UKTravelshop

Thanks

John

PS
I checked on the ABTA website and it says the verification date was May, what is the verification date mean please?
We booked before this date, but only this year

My daughter booked in Feb or Mar and I booked in April, so are they only allowed to apply the surcharge from the 20th May onwards?

The verification date is the date they were given authorisation to surcharge. There should also be a from and to date of the flights they are allowed to surcharge on.

John, as you are no doubt aware by now unfortunately Onur Air have been authorised to add fuel supplements. Just wanted to check as I have seen people mistakenly charged these supplements when using BMI or Thomsonfly. I would be annoyed too - hope you have a great holiday though!

Its hardly greed, the fuel costs ARE going through the roof and are affecting every part of life, so it can be expected airlines have to raise their costs to keep up with the pace of the price increases. Dare I say but they will keep going up in price now during the rest of the year, anyone fancying a cheap flight to New York in the winter I think will be in for a big surprise.
