Usually we go the Canaries in the winter but fancied an earlier break to somewhere we have not been before.
My husband and bro-in-law say that they have been put off as people they know whom have visited, say that they were mugged and threatened with a knife etc.
Now I am not so niave to make a decision based on 1/2 peoples experiences Please help! I would love to go.
I would not fancy Turkey again as a first choice as we felt unsafe and were almost mugged. There are muggings, violence anywhere you go and even where we live in the UK!!
If we stayed in Sousse, Port El Kantoui or Hammamet are these "safe" resorts please? Can we venture out the beach and shops etc?? Are these child friendly places and plenty to do??
Sorry about the bombardment of questions!
thanks in advance of any replies

Hia tonya, I went to tunisia, last yr with my 14yr old son, I read some right horror stories, people were telling me, you won't be left alone with me being blonde and blue-eyed :shrug, I can honestly say, I felt completly safe, the guys come up to you on the beach, trying to sell stuff, but a polite no thank you, was all I had to say, we didn't go to the medina, so can not comment on there, but did go out and about a little bit, and once again, I felt safe, I personally would go back tomorrow if I could, I found it so different to mainland Spain, a lot more relaxed and a slower pace
Having read some of the resort reports-PEK might be our best bet?
We arrived back in the UK on the 20th April and had to go into Nottingham on the 21st, as someone had cloned our credit card whilst we were away. Standing at the bus stop to come back home, we were very apprehensive - perhaps I should be truthful and say we were afraid - when we ended up surrounded by a gang of girls!! Enough said! Go with an open mind tonya and I'm sure that you will thoroughly enjoy it. All best - Jenny x
Debating whether its Tunisia or Majorca but quickly going off the idea of Majorca due to people saying that the resorts close down and weather can be very rainy!
I need to decide by Sat 31st May as the site I book my accomadation on has 20% off! till then!
Thanks to everyone replying!!

I've been going out there twice a year for ages now and have always felt completely safe in Sousse or PEK, even though I travel alone. They do try to get you into their shops to buy their goods but you can hardly blame them for that. I love strolling through the Medina and having a laugh with the shopkeepers, who can speak so many different languages. If you really don't want to get involved in the banter just say my name in response to their 'Hello' and keep on walking, as 'aslemma' means 'hello' in Arabic and that way they won't know where you come from.
I am always on the Gran Canaria forum as its my fav Canary destination and we are lucky enough to have been 3 times in the last 6 months.
Thanks again everyone for your replies

hi fiona we're a bit like you - fed up with spain and the like. we were real tenerife fans and went 11 times in about 4 years.then we tried goa and egypt and what a difference! we wanted a quick week away last year in september and i really wanted to try tunisia but it was the same time as ramadam and that put my husband off so we opted for majorca.we had a week of mixed weather- warm and sunny, cool and overcast and rain. but we found that the prices had risen considerably since we went a few years ago and a lot of the places weren't bothered whether they served you or not.so i regretted not booking tunisia after all. we went to goa again in feb and we have booked sharm for october but next year i am going to tunisia!!
i first went to tunisia when i was 9, 10 years ago now, and it has changed so much(i think) since then. i go every 4/5 months to tunisia now, sometimes by myself and feel very safe there.

That was our 1st time in June of this year, and I can honestly say it was one of the most relaxing holidays I have ever had and also one of the best! ok, the hotel was'nt up to much, but it has not put me off returning, I will just choose a better hotel next time.

hi fiona
We stayed in Hotel Belair, and to be quite frank, it was okay! lots of staff were very nice, though I did think the entertainment team were not interested in anyone uless they were getting constanly tipped, they always hung about the people that were tipping them all the time.
Other staff were lovely!
Rooms basic, but spotless, beds very uncomfortable!
Loads of entertainment in hotel and outside right around hotel! lots of clubs etc
Food was ok, but quite repetitive
Anything you want to know ,feel free to ask

My daughter (early 20's) and myself went to PEK a few years back for a week, and felt quite confident walking around the resort at night. As long as you take the same precautions as you would at home, you should be fine. We did have the occasional shopkeeper calling after us around the harbour area, but no more than you'd get in most tourist areas in any country. There was certainly no one trying to sell us time shares.
