thanks
My GP is doing them free and recommends they be done 2-4 weeks before travel.
Thanks HTH
went to see the nurse for our booster of Hep A in march as we were in the maldives last yr and had the whole kaboodle then.
we are taking the kids this year and she looked on their recommendations and said they only needed Hep A as we are on a large complex and not likely to be roaming around too much, nor living with the locals. she said we did not need typhoid.

Please which is right.
Vaccinations are not needed for the tourist resorts of Turkey.
We have been going for 12 years and have never had them. If you are worried speak to your doctor's practice nurse or your local pharmacist.
I know loads of people who never have jabs, my sister included, and she is a Practice Nurse!
We had them, just because I could never forgive myself if the kids caught anything.

Like many folks on this forum I have been travelling to Turkey for a number of years and benefited from the experiences of those who contribute to this and other such sites. Whilst this is brilliant and helpful I can't help but feel that sometimes it is more prudent to take the overall advice of a health professional such as your GP to that of a frequent visitor to your intended tourist destination. Yes we can listen to the views of the local population, yes we can try and comprehend the subjective views of fellow tourist but at the end of the day we really should consider the bigger picture and accept the opinions issued by our GP's. My wife and I have both had the hep A and Typhoid jab, and we will take the over the counter medicine for malaria prior to our visit in July, not because our fellow travellers say it is not necesary but rather because my extremely professional and qualified GP says it is recommended. This is an important issue, go to your GP and ask? for goodness sake this is important!
You don't have to have them every time you travel either as typhoid covers you for 3 years and hep A for 10 (but you need 2 jabs six months apart for this one). They're free & relatively painless anyway (just a quick scratch)! so why not just get them done? We had ours last year, including the kids age 10,11 & 14, no probs.

But not necessarily free. My NHS GP charges adults a lot for jabs! £25 just for tetanus booster.
True - different NHS practices charge different prices for injections.
If you know someone who's registered with a non-charging GP though you could always say you're staying with them for a while (as long as it's less than 3 months) fill out a temporary resident form and get them for free!

The first time we went which was 11 years ago my whole family had them done and we have all had the follow ups required. Maybe there is little chance of caching Hep A or Typhoid in the resorts but if you did catch them would you be covered by your insurance? I doubt it.
My reasoning is, better safe than sorry, it is after all little more than a scratch.
Jim.
Hi, We were told by our practice nurse to log on to the MASTA website which gives you up to date information on what you need in the way of injections and mosquito tablets for wherever you go in the world. We had to pay about £3 and then print off the information and take to the doctors with us. We did not need mosquito tablets and just a booster for the usual injections. The pharmacist will also be able to give you information as they have a book which is updated about every three months.
Well just got mine yesterday Diptheria,Polio and tetnus Booster and they now recommend Typhoid as well. My NHS GP relieved me of £55 for that, they kindly took the £30 consultancy fee off the total. I really gave it second thoughts about not having them. Particularly, as I went to Africa in the 90's took all my anti malarial drugs and still got Malaria.
As far as I am aware, none of the GPs charge in our area - I wonder if it is an NHS Trust policy to charge in some areas?
Gosh, I would really like to show some of our moaning patients this thread, and just show them how lucky they are
Tracey
