Hi Ron
They've all made a prosperous living out of us over the years.
I don't think anyone can deny that they have made a living out of us, but prosperous? only the few.
It's been calculated that Benidorm represents 4% of the total tourism in Spain and now they want tourism status.
Last month they were given the green light by the Spanish government for modification of tax laws and to be considered as a tourist municipality, and to acquire this status a town has to have more than 20,000 population and the number of tourist homes has to be greater than that of main residence.
At the moment there are only 21 localities within Spain with tourist distinction which gives the Ayuntamiento more flexibility in such things as shop opening times and in other areas.
So, they need more tourists and they need to attract international tourism if they truly want to be considered as tourist status.
It's never a good idea to put all your eggs in one basket and that's what Spain has done, well two baskets, one the construction industry which has now collapsed due the saturation outstripping demand, and the other is relying on tourism and particularly one nation for tourists.
Times have changed and a different generation are now looking to experience the culture of different countries far and wide, and it can be detrimental having a place full of Brits because there are some people who don't go to Benidrorm because it is full of Brits....it's the same with Majorca and the Germans....Majorcan residents are fed up with Germans and their attitude that Majorca is their home.
