Body scanners a clear winner
Manchester airport will rely on body scanners at all its security areas by the end of the month after passengers gave them a thumbs up.
The airport's management says that after a year's passenger surveying in which 95% of people said they preferred the scanning to the old pat down method, work would begin this week on installing a scanner on the third and final security area.
This comes exactly a year after body scanning was first trialled at the airport.
The airport said the replacing of patting down with body scanning has also dramatically reduced passenger queues at security. The average time for a passenger to be patted down is two minutes whereas the scan takes 25 seconds.
Said Manchester Airport managing director Andy Harrison: "We began trialling a body scanner in 2009 because one of the most regular complaints from our passengers was about being patted down at security. Body scanners could solve this but we also knew that the technology was controversial which is why we embarked on a trial."
"Our passengers and staff tell us that they much prefer the experience of a body scanner because it is significantly quicker as it doesn't involved being frisked nor does it require them to remove their coats, jackets and belts.
He added: "We fully respect that a small number of people have reservations about body scanners on privacy or medical grounds but we have gone to great lengths to ensure the highest levels of privacy protection and expert studies have shown that the technology is safe.
"That's why we have decided to install a body scanner in Terminal 3 giving all of our 18 and a half million passengers a better security experience when travelling through Manchester Airport."

M56 CLOSED APPROACHING MAN AIRPORT
M56 is closed eastbound this weekend and will be next weekend between the M6 and the airport access. Traffic from Chester and Preston direction is diverted via M6 south to Junc 19 then back up A556 to M56 Junc 7. This does involve an already busy road with traffic lights so allow at least 30 minutes extra.
Traffic from M6 south (Stoke) follows normal route via Junc 19 A556 but may be affected by above congestion.
Approaching airport westbound from city/M60 the M56 is open but closed from Junc 6 (cargo centre/Travelodge access) and there will be tail backs which may reach Junc 5 (airport slip road).
Leaving the airport there is no access to the M6 via the M56 westbound. If you don't know any other short cuts follow the EASTBOUND M56 and diversions via M60/M62.
During the week there will be no link between the westbound M56 (Junc 7) and A556 for Junc 19 of M6 for soutbound traffic and there is a rather interesting tour of the M56 signposted - don't panic, it is supposed to be like that!
Now do you wish you'd bought a decent atlas instead of sat-nav???
Update
all did not go to plan and the work has had to be extended. This means no access from the airport to the M6 until November 1st and the airport bound delays now happening for an additional weekend (30th October-1st November)

Took me 3/4 of an hour to travel just 1.5 miles. God help anyone getting to the airport, make sure you leave PLENTY of time.
I am thinking of booking an airport lounge at Manchester Airport in Terminal 1 but when I looked at the website there are 2 available - The Escape and the Bollin lounges and I dont know which one to choose and what the differences are. I have never used a lounge before as usually travel with my daughters but thought it would be a nice treat for myself and husband and would welcome any reviews.
Many thanks
Loretta
I booked the Escape lounge in T2, but my choice was based on the website pictures - it just looked the nicest of the 2 i had a choice of.
I have used both. We used the new escape in T1 in September and thought it was very good. We were there early morning and it was quiet. We didn't really feel like taking full advantage of the food on offer but other half did have porridge, which he said was ok. The Bollin Lounge is good also but doesn't offer the same range of food. It depends on whether you want to eat or just snack.
Also the Escape is a bar for drinks so you have to wait to be served as opposed to helping yourself.
Many thanks to Feebee and Sunaddict for your replys. As we are planning on having a bite to eat I think we will choose the Escape Lounge this time but as we have 4 free vouchers to use we can always try the Bollin one next time.
I am flying to Cancun from Manchester at the end of the month, I will be taking scuba equipment with me, I have a canister torch containing a weighty battery, can I put this in my hand luggage. I need to tweak the weight of my checked bags.
I take scuba with me as well so can appreciate where you're coming from. You're fine taking the torch with you. However, I would remove any o-rings if you can to prevent any inflight pressure problems. As the cabin pressure reduces, air may come out of the sealed tourch making it impossible to open at ground pressure. See what the manufacturer recommends. It's something I always do with camera housings. I'm assuming it's a sealed battery, ie NiCad or NiMH? As long as the weight / size of hand luggage is within limits of the airline, you shouldn't have any problems. Security may want to have a look at it at security though. You'll find further information on our dedicated HAND LUGGAGE REGULATIONS & INCREASED SECURITY .. Q&As topic.
Darren
I will plan on packing the canister in my checked bag, the light head will be carry on and I'll now pack the battery in carry on. It will be easier to explain the black wires and red and black connectors to security than packing them in the hold and showing up on the X-ray.
