Eirini, I would agree that the Oasis in Agia is well worth the trip and visit!! Food is excellent and the views are fabulous! Good to know that's where the "locals" go as we may well soon be locals ourselves!
See you in about 6 weeks

Hi
We 40 something girlies have been recommended Parga as somewhere still fairly Greek but not in the middle of nowhere. We're looking for restaurants, bars and shops, not at all worried about nightclubs.

Can anyone tell me if this resort is worth a visit or should we avoid it?

Can anyone recommend any hotels, restaurants etc?

I was also told the shopping is very good here - especially for jewellery is that right? We REALLY enjoy our retail therapy. In fact that could be a deciding factor in choosing!

OK Twinklestar,
First off... take it from someone who's been going to Parga for 23 years (15 visits) This I promise you will be just the right place! Great beaches, (Valtos is our favourite, but Lichnos and Sarakiniko are both good too) the shopping is good and the Jewellers varied and good quality! Just up from the main crossroads on the right hand side you will find Eirini and Petros Papanikolau.. great little jewellery shop and they have all sorts there at great prices! Other retail therapy is also well catered for and the Taverna's and Bars spoil you for choice
There are a couple of "clubs" but they are soundproofed and out of the way so no worries there1
Someone said to me when I first had the place recommended in 1982 that you will find other places possibly as nice as Parga..... but you won't find anywhere nicer.
Despite modernisation this is still true and the place remains very Greek! The locals are the nicest people you can meet and very friendly
I can give you loads of recommendations re places to eat, trips etc if you want to contact me ... you will find my e mail address on the http://www.parga.com page

Hi,
I agree 100% with what Kelvin West says.
We have not found anywhere like Parga in all our Greek travels. We prefer to stay on the Valtos side where there is an excellent beach and it is quiet.
It is a short boat taxi ride or walk into town where there are numerous restaurants and a good selection of shops.
The majority of people that you meet in Valtos have been there numerous times.

valtosmythos, thanks for the "back up" It seems that most of us are hit by the "Parga Bug" I think perhaps the only way we differ is in that we prefer the town side to Valtos... however, travelling independantly this year we made our own arrangements and stayed at the top of the castle steps... brilliant for access both ways! We will stay there again next year for sure, ok it can be a slog late night getting back up there, but with enough Mythos to fuel you it's not that bad (and there is always the back way past the hairdressers) and you are in the centre in 5 minutes or less..plus you pass the shops either going down or coming back up, (plus the Sail in and Blue bar) and its two minutes away from Stefanos... great place to be! roll on next year and another 3 weeks!

Hi Kelvin West,
We have never actually stayed in the town itself. We quite like the idea of it , but we also like the idea of the peace and quiet of the "other side". How did it work out price-wise on your latest holiday. Was it much more expensive than going with a package. Our problem is that we go for three weeks and there are not a lot of operators,I think it is only Manos, who do three week deals.

twinklestar, Parga is beautiful and wonderful and delightful and will be exactly what you want. Nothing else to say apart from book early and book often!

Valtosmythos.... I'd agree with you about wanting somewhere quiet (to sleep etc)
In all previous years we have been with "packages" (mostly Kosmar)but as you know we, like you wanted to go for three weeks this year so we made our own arrangements and actually we got three weeks for less than what it cost us for two with Kosmar last year! Given also that Kosmar stitched us up last year!
OK we booked flights earlyish to make sure but getting our own accomm organised was pretty cheap. We stayed at the top of the steps near the castle (arranged through Stefanos family... whom I have known for a long time, as previously mentioned) and it was brilliant! quieter than I expected, air con, TV etc and 30 euros per day..not bad! There are cheaper places (for instance Don Dokos is cheaper, but further out (though quiet)
I would suggest that you make your own arrangements, we got our flights with "Astraeus" and they were really good (and good flight times too!
Booking your own accomm means that at least you know where you are, and are not liable to last minute change, as has happened with Kosmar customers this year
If you need more info you'll find my e mail address on the parga.com site (wedding page)

Hi Kelvin,
Thanks for the info.We have been fortunate with Manos and never had a problem. I have found that the 30 Euros a day price appears to be the going rate for September, which is not too bad.
I am sure I will be in contact when Greece re-opens, at the moment I am full of Souvlaki and Mythos , having just returned from Skiathos.

Hi Kelvin Do you have a www. page for Astraeus to book seats.

Again I find myself agreeing with Kelvin and Valtosmythos about Parga, this would be an ideal resort for you, like Kelvin we prefer the 'town' side but whatever side of the castle you stay you will enjoy Parga.

We have just returned from Corfu, and as we like parga so much we did a day trip by boat, just to spend 2 hours in Parga, a very quick hello to Bettina, Yannis, Michalis and Greg, a Mythos (or 2) and we were gone  back next year though :D

As Kelvin mentioned you can get a lot of info including restaurants, bars etc in Parga at

http://www.parga.com

There is a wide range of shops in Parga with many excellent jewellery shops, ideal therapy :)

valtomythos,
How does Skiathos compare with Parga? I have heard lots of comment saying that it is very similar. and probably the closest comparison in Greece to my "second home".. but more expensive! so I just wondered, also a lot of Pargaphiles seem to be going to Stoupa as well/instead of. Almost tempted to try it though it seems that Stoupa is quieter and I really like the fact that you can have "the best of both worlds" in Parga. If any of our friends in Parga are reading this page I'd just like to say thanks to all of you (Stefanos & Rachel. Panos Nikos and Kostas, Don & Yiota, etc... too many to list) for another great holiday! See you all again next year

Hi Kelvin. I don't think Skiathos compares (favourably) with Parga at all. We thought Skiathos was OK for beach lovers, not much in the way of history, scenery, etc. Skiathos town was quite nice, lots of little streets, nice restaurants, harbour etc. but it is not on my list of places to visit again. I wait to be corrected by all Skiathos lovers!
 If I wasn't going to Parga, my choice would be either Stoupa, Finnikounda, or Kefalonia. Gail.

Hi,
I must admit, for the first week of our holiday , I didn`t like it much at all. I made the mistake of comparing it to Parga and of course, everywhere is different and should be treated so.The only problems we had were the fact that there was no beach in the immediate vicinity which meant taking a bus, and also there was nowhere to go with the car really. We spent a lot of time at the Dog Sanctuary and visited the other islands a few times but really Skiathos is an island for beach lovers, and it does that very well.
Also in its favour was the fact that there were a very good selection of good reataurants to choose from, more than in Parga. I would go back there for a weeks holiday but when the weather is bad it does become a problem.

Dear Valtosmythos,
We went to Skiathos ( koukounaries ) in Late August 2005 and found it to be very expensive when compared to other islands we have visited. We have booked to go to Parga in 2006, in the Nikitas Apartments ( Manos )near Valtos beach. Do you have any knowledge of these apartments? and how do the prices compare between Skiathos and Parga ?

Hi Rhombus,
We haven`t actually stayed at the aprtments but have met a lot of people who have ,as they are next to the places we normally stay. Everyone has given the Nikitas a good report. You are well situated being a short walk from Valtos beach. The main town of Parga is about 15 minutes walk away
as you have to walk up a slope and down the steps the other side. It can be pretty hard going at first but you soon get used to it.
The alternative is to take the boat taxi into the town which costs 1 euro and is such an excellent way of arriving in town in the evening we tended to use it most of the time going, but walk back .
It is hard to compare prices but I have a feeling that Skiathos was a bit more expensive based on the cost of meals out.
I guarantee you will enjoy it there.

:D We went to Parga for the first time this summer and in all honesty it was the nicest greek place we have ever been to. We absolutely loved it and can't wait to go back there. It has plenty to do and yet has retained the greek charm, which is refreshing as many other greek resorts are becoming too touristy.

We stayed at the Valtos side, and thought it was perfect. You do get used to the walk up and down from the castle, however I'd recommend taking comfy, non-slippy shoes though. Enjoy!!! :D
