After a bad flight from America i didnt step on board another plane for 6 years!... But what a waste of the ability to travel and see different places! So last year was my first time flying since America - went to the doctors and got some Valium. About an hour into the flight i couldn't care if we crashed or anything and was even looking out the window and walking round (where previously i was crying and my heart was breaking through my chest!) Now i'm not saying to rush out there and get some as i would rather overcome my fear myself but it does help A LOT!
Cosmic Babe. Thats interesting. I had Diazepam 2.5mg tabs from Doctor last year, which I took 2 of before each flight. I think I was more relaxed but overall didnt notice that much different. Is what you take (Valium) the same or different? I am flying to Turkey in 2 weeks which I am starting to get very nervous about and already have a prescription waiting for me and have booked to go to America next year so after what you said feel a bit anxious about that also. Sue
i've got 2mg Diazepam tablets for going, i got 3, one for testing before i go to see how i reacted with it incase it sent me doolally, one for the way out and one for the way home! I've taken my tester one and it made me seriously spaced out! i'm not worried about the flight this year because i know if i take one of these i just sit and stare into space for about 3 hours, long enough to cover the flight! i'll swear by them everytime i go abroad from now on!
Am getting nervous still now though! Think maybe i should take one every day till i get there!!

I too, take diazepam when I fly.
I take one as we leave for the airport, one on arrival and one as we get on the plane (I also have a 4th, but as yet, have never needed to use that one!)
I also have a brandy and coke on the flight, which the doctor said was okay to do, so long as I didn't have too many as this would send me to sleep (fat chance of that happening!)
However, this year when we got picked up from the hotel, the coach driver drove the majority of the journey to the airport (over hills and around hair pin bends) whilst on his mobile phone! Needless to say, I took my first valium BEFORE I got to the airport!!!
But ........because the coach journey was so scary, the flight home seemed like a dream!!!!

Hi Elaine, Diazepam seems to be the norm now for 'fearful flyers'. I too started to take these last year. Just wondered what strength you take, as you seem to take quite a few before you fly. I take one at check-in and one when boarding the plane. Not really sure if I am getting benefit from them or not. I didnt panic last time, so maybe I did! Dont feel lightheaded or anything, what about you?? I take 2mg strength. Do you try them before you go? Would appreciate your comments as I am not sure whether to go for stronger dose this year. Thanks. Sue
The doctor gives me 2mg tablets. Like I said earlier, I take three, one before I leave the house, one at the airport and one on the plane. I find that enough. I thought I'd never taken a fourth, but thinking about it now, last year I did take four and felt too light headed during the flight. I find that I am fine just taking three, which makes me feel very relaxed without feeling too lightheaded.
I'd rather take the three and have a nice brandy and coke too! Apparently 2mg is a very light dose.
I'm able to do the usual things on the plane, suduko, word searches etc etc!!!
Cheers
Elaine
Thanks for the info - really helpful. As the doctor has given me 10 tabs, I think I will try and take them a few days before to see whether 3 would be better as taken 2 in the past and not much effect. I am flying next Monday 9th so am now starting to feel stressed! Sue
Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere,But I am due to fly soon and as I am a nervous flyer I would like to know if anyone has tried the Bach rescue remedy to help calm themselves down before a flight.
Diazepam works a treat for me!
I always use it and it seems to work quite well for me. May be all in the mind but that's what matters.
Moved to flights section.
I've not used it personally but being a Pharmacy Technician I regularly recommend it to customers.....judging by the feedback I get I'd say it deffo works
It doesn't do a thing for me, and now that you cannot take liquids in your hand luggage I don't see the point of taking it before you go through security
however, hope you all been fine on your hols!
now then 2.5mg 5mg.even 10mg i had them all,now dr gives me (20mg now due to very bad experiance) to fly and believe you me they dont make me a zombie but relax me and thats what i need,so dont be afraid of taking a higher dosage if the dr. is happy to give it to you.not that im promoting these but as the worst flyer ever my dr. believes why let something so (silly) ruin your enjoyment of holidays, and i cant agree more, they are harmless if taking for a short period of time over a 1/2 weel holiday each year.lets face it some people are on a lot more serious drugs for a lot longer period of time.without these i would never even get on a plane!!!!!!!!! my family and myself AND THE MONEY WE PUT INTO FOREIGN COUNTRIES well benefit from this little tablet i take to get me there,,so why make so many other people suffer for my problems when its not needed.flying out 7.20 friday 14 sept.really looking forward to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT,HEHEHEEHE.
CHEERS ALL KAREN
Just had a giggle at your recent post. Did you have a good holiday? - where exactly did you go? Dare I ask how the flight was?
Sue
Hadn't thought of valium, are gp's sympathetic about "fear of flying" and how readily do they offer valium?
p.s - can you buy valium from pharmacies in Goa??
However, advice on any medications such as diazepam or valium would be best sought from your own GP, based on your own medical history. Such advice and discussion here in this topic may be unhelpful and inappropriate, as the medical history of individual members will obviously differ, as might the attitude of individual GPs towards certain medications.

I always tend to prebook my seats so I can get to the airport later, then look around the shops, have a play on the arcade machines, basically keep my mind occupied, then before you know it, you are being called to board.
Once im on the plane I cant wait to get there. Take off and landing doesnt bother me, its just the bit inbetween, its sooo boring!! The thought of watching 4 films on the way to the Carribean for example, I couldnt do that in the house laid on my fave sofa.
I'm not a fan of turbulance though. I know planes wont crash because of it, and I can handle mild turbulance, you know, the odd drop, but last year flying back from Mallorca at 35,000 in a 737, I looked out the window to see a wall of cloud, never seen anything like it before. I strapped in and told my partner to do the same, we were sat right at the back.
As we flew into the cloud, the wings of the aircraft totally disappeared, couldnt see them. Darkness fell on the cabin, and for the next 10 minutes it was a rollercoaster ride. Even one of the stewards fell over in the isle trying to get back to his seat. The wind hitting the tail of the plane was throwing us all over the place. Then we flew out of the cloud and was back to normal. Never encountered that at this altitude before.
Weird thing is for me, i'm not scared of crashing in turbulance, i'm more afraid of being sick because of it and looking a fool. Also, I find turbulance easier to handle if I can see the horizon. I didnt like that event because we were surrounded by thick dark cloud. Hence I try not to do night flights, I prefer to see the horizon.
Strangely, I also prefer to fly on Boeing's rather than Airbus. Just all the incidents with Airbus over the years put me off, and anything made partly by the French I dont want to know.
I flew on the 777 to Canada last year and couldnt fault it. I was reading on another forum that out of all airliners, the 777 handles turbulance the best? Not sure if that is right. In 32 days im off to NY, 747 on the way out, and 777 on the way back. Looking forward to it.
I've been flying all of my life, have always holidayed abroad as a child and since having my own children has flown to Spain with them 3 times. However we are all going to Mexico in 3 weeks and I have never flown long haul before so I'm a bit worried about how I'll cope with that. Also, when I was young and free (hahaha) I used to enjoy flying. But now that I have my own children I can't stop imagining the worst. How bad would it be if I took my beautiful trusting children on board that flight and something terrible happened? They could be killed and its my fault. I'm not bothered for myself, but every time we hit a bit of turbulence my heart stops and I think " Oh my God this is it. I've killed my babies- they are going to suffer and its my fault and there's nothing I can do to stop it happening"
Am I just crazy- does anyone else out there feel like this?
This holiday has cost us a fortune and I don't want anything to spoil it but I can't shake off these negative feelings
