OK then Nikki..............we'll just have to agree to disagree.
You are right about one thing: we definitely go to different places! When I've ben to Spain I always find the food delicious. The sort of restauarants I go in serve things like freshly cooked paella, crispy cooked calamari, seafood casseroles cooked in red wine and saffron, spitfired chicken cooked with whole garlic and lemons, patata brava, spicy chirizo in red wine....................a real variety!
In Turkey, starters are not free (unless offered as a set meal). Maybe you're talking about the free bread with cacik and garlic butter? That comes standard with all meals; but it's not a starter. Starters are things like prawn cocktail, stuffed tomatoes, stuffed peppers, vine leaves, soup, garlic mushrooms, borek, or a meze. And you have to pay for those.
Gene,
That cafe is not a proper Turkish cafe/restauarant. It is a place where staff who work in the resort, to go to for a cup of tea and a snack. A genuine Turkish restauarant is nothing like that whatsoever.
Strawberry
Sounds like you don't think much of turkey strawberry... this forum is for us to discuss our love of the place.
love nikki xx
We go all over on holiday.
You get good and bad in most countries and what suit 1 wont suit the other.
Spanish food is lovely if you go to the right places. Also Turkish food is lovely but keep away from the steak houses.
When in rome do as the romans. I love to eat local food but this is not evreyone's cup of tea.
I'm from Yorkshire and I would never eat yorkshire pudding on holiday, but I wouldn't frown at those who do.
Turkey is 1 of the most scenic places I have ever been to and I really love it. We are going to Lykia World and the food is excellent.
I agree drink is expensive in Turkey but I am happy to pay a holiday is what you want it be. And you 2 will never agree you are from very different backgrounds.
Just lead me away from the english brekkies and the fish and chips and I'm happy.
Each to their own when they are off on their hols but as I don't want to eat the same foods as I do at home I go to smaller resorts where you are hard pushed to find brit type food.
I was told that Kalkan was expensive but we didn't find it so, but then I wasn't comparing it to Marmaris. We simply found it brilliant that we could try so much seafood at a fraction of the price we could have it at home (that's if we could even find things like amberjack and swordfish at home).
I'm also quite happy to have local spirits and I don't really go away expecting to have a bargain. I have a budget and I'm prepared to spend it.

When is a Cafe or Restaurent not traditional just because the working class frequent it?
Gene
I would say a genuine turkish restaurant is a restaurant which serves turkish food. Doesn't matter whether it's a tiny place with plastic seating or a swish place with nicely dressed waiters and quality tablecloths.
You missed out the Liverpool Chippy
I will look out for you in Icmeler might buy you an Efes if we are in the cheap pub
Lynn
I never said a restaurant which caters for resort workers was not genuine. What I said was, the cafe you first mentioned was simply a place that sold snacks; pizza etc.
Most of the restaurants in resorts are geared towards holidaymakers, and if you want authentic Turkish cooking (which is very good when cooked well) you won't find many (if any) in a main resort.
The Kemer, for example, is a very nice restaurant, but it isn't a truly authentic Turkish restauarant. As nice as it was when I ate there, it wasn't typical of an authentic Turkish restauarant; I didn't think so, and neither did my partner - who is Turkish. All the same, the lady owner does a brilliant cheesecake! Very similar to an authentic Jewish-style cheesecake. But not remotely Turkish.
It doesn't really matter anyway, does it? As long as you're happy, and I'm happy, that's all that matters.
I like Turkey very much; which is why I've spent about a year and a half living out there since 2004. I thnk it's a beautiful country. But just because I find some of the things nice - it doesn't mean to say I have to like everything. I don't like their meat, and I don't like their wine; tough for me!
But I like their fish, I like their kebabs, and I like their bread and fruit.
By the way SandC, I buy swordfish frequently from Sainsbury's and Waitrose. I think most supermarkets sell it here now.
Strawberry
Yes I thought you could get swordfish here strawberry, I was just referring to what you would pay in a restaurant here for nice fish and what a bargain it is to try out seafood in Turkey (although not a bargain as in a 'cheap meal' that some are referring to on the thread).
Turkish restaurants/Turkish cafes. All good.
Just lead me away from the english brekkies and the fish and chips and I'm happy.
Each to their own when they are off on their hols but as I don't want to eat the same foods as I do at home I go to smaller resorts where you are hard pushed to find brit type food.

Redrhino - these are our favourite type of eateries in Turkey.
It's just as well we're all different. The world would be a very boring place otherwise.
The seafood in Turkey is so much cheaper than it is in the UK. I regularly go to Fethiye Fish Market, and buy their king prawns, seabass etc...........besides being so fresh that sometimes the prawns are still moving ( ) it costs about a third of the price than it would do in England.
Also, as it's so hot in Turkey, I personally wouldn't fancy a heavy fry up or hot greasy burger in a thick bun. I'd feel all lethargic for the rest of the day if I ate like that!
Strawberry
Would appreciate some pointers as to the current cost of food and drinks in the Marmaris area this year .
Thanks in advance
Jim
Large beer - 4 YTL
Small beer - 3 YTL
Soft drinks - 3 YTL
Imported drinks - 6-9 YTL
Cocktails - 5-10 YTL
Typical main course meal between 10 YTL - 27YTL in seafront restaurants
Still very good though.
Bottle of wine from 20 ytl
Small glass of wine 5 ytl
Main meal away from seafront 5 ytl - 10 ytl
Went to a few bars buy a cocktail get 1 free, only to discover they were selling them in smaller tumblers so you were NOT getting 1 free, 99% of the restuarants were over charging on your bills
Also found some shop keepers were very aggresive, this is my 6th vist in 2 years but will not be back
If this was end of season would not like to book for high season
I've heard about the con of 'two drinks for the price of one' - and they just give you the same amount in two smaller glasses.
When these bar owners get up to these tricks, and add drinks onto your bill which you haven't had, it makes you wonder how stupid they think we are! They're treating holidaymakers like idiots!
I've also heard that many bars fill up imported label spirits with local stuff! And give you short measures when you have it with a mixer.
It really leaves a bad taste in the mouth - in more ways than one!
Strawberry
If we complined we were called gypsies, this is not the Turkey we visted before, they have to realize Brits are not super rich we work very hard all year to go on holiday, and we want value and a fair price, on our holidays
rip of britain has now reached to rip off turkey
In the airport thier are cartels, every place is exact same price we bought a tin of ice tea it was £3, if they go into the E.U., they will learn this practise is illegal
The airport air conditioning seemed to be off or very low, to get tourists to spend at the airport, it has given me an expieriance I wont forget, we are already booked for next year but we are prepared to loose our deposit than go through all this again
Would advise very strongly to anyone going 2008, try and get the best all inclusive hotel you can afford, and book that, in the long term you will save the hassle and have more money in your pocket, and have the holiday you wanted
Can not reccomened enough Club Belcekiz in Olu Deniz, we were there in May, worth every penny and fab holiday with no hassle
I am begining to panic again (same as the last time I booked Turkey ) I have booked Turkey for next year and just hope Olu Deniz doesn't go the same way. It seems that trends that start in the big resorts seem to spread to smaller resorts. Particularly worried about the agression. 3 quid for iced tea Not so worried about if they join the EU though as most of them will move here along with the rest of Eastern Europe. LOL.
Please dont let my expierance put you off, as I said we were in Olu Deniz in May and had a fantastic holiday, though the prices had went up we had no hassle, I hope with the size of Olu Deniz, you wont ever get the local aggression we had in Maramis
Have a nice holiday
The 3 quid for iced tea was in airport not in resort
for your good wishes. This happens to me all the time. I book and then panic. I stayed at Cub Belcekic Beach last year and although I realise this hotel has a kind of 'cult following' am wishing I had booked it again, but got an unbeatable deal for 2008 to Lykia so went with that, but keep thinking of cancelling. Don't know what's wrong with me and now all the dodgy posts about Turkey are putting me off again?
