It will be interesting to see if the Police's smash and grab tactics in the C.C.B. stretch are repeated, and the same treatment dished out, further north, where the Russians have taken over everything, somehow I doubt it, as there's a lot of heavy money up there, and that will likely keep them untouched. Alan
There's also the unknown of what might happen around Candolim when they start trying to move the River Princess away. With all the talk about cleaning up the illegal shacks and the rubbish. Not much ever gets said about the RP and the effects that it might have on the coast around Candolim.
Who knows?
I spoke too soon!! Read The Herald article in the RP topic.
Police out in force today (18/04) along the Candolim to Baga stretch I could see at least 30. Then there were a lot of guys carring machettes, knives and saws may be as many as 50 some were carrying beach beds and chairs and tables and were loading them on to a lorry. There were also men that looked like government officials carrying legal documents (I managed to get a peek at one as he walked by) I got the impression that they were from the court and they were also taking photos of the shacks.
I suppose it's an easier option than investigating murders, or trying to get to grips with the horrendous drug culture that they've allowed to develop. Much easier to pick on soft options like shack owners, who are supplying a service to the tourists, and likely a chance for some more bribes, to save trashing fridges and the like. I think anyone who thinks it will be back to normal next season is in for a shock. There seems to be a different Goa emerging this past season, I've seen lots of token gestures over unlicensed shacks, or too many sunbeds before, but this time it seems to be different, as if they want to put an end to the shacks once and for all. It will kill the tourist trade, but likely please the big hotel owners, and after all, the tourism minister does'nt want we "dregs" anyway, so he wont miss us. When he realises his mistake, it'll be too late as we'll all be off elsewhere Alan
Well said Gramps, anyone fancy Panama ?
As for next year, he says not to worry about there being no shacks.
All the regulars on this site must have seen some destruction of certain shacks over the years - I know I have, for what reason - who knows ? no licence, not willing to pay a back hander ?
Frank Zapper's closed mid March time, may be a little earlier. From what we where told Filomena decided to close up early.

Front page of Herald today........ shacks and beds ravaged/removed by police in sth Goa yesterday...it states Tourists were taken aback (or similar) as they had the beds removed that they were lying on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great for tourism huh!
anyway, and the season is nearly over ,what a shame for our fellow holiday makers
It must have been very intimidating for them.

Still no mention of any action being taken against the northern beaches, that have been taken over by our Russian friends, have they friends in high places ?? Alan
Look out for next year
I had a tx from my friend Jay who works in Thomas beach shack in Calangute he said Thomas is still open and will be open to the first week in june ...... I know this is to do with shacks in Candolim but just incase anyone is going and then they will know Thomas is open in Calangute .....colleen
The northern beaches are unaffected. No police up there. Friend at Morjim was going to close on the 15th April but he's still open and staying open another few days because all the closures in Calangute/Candolim etc. have sent people further north and he's doing pretty well for the end of the season.
complicated procedure of licences is another story, but hey! stealing power, spitting to regulations aso. ....
i accept the wish of authorities to gain an order (somekind of order) and if this is a first step - you must start from somewhere. another thread you wish more strenght in dealing with drugs aso. in the same time if you do not like the orders of high court because it comes too close to you - you scream out loud. some people do like drugs - do you suggest them to protest as well?

???
hello, isnt it a slightly double morality to accept illegal activities only because the subject is your friend. do you like to enjoy the fruits of the criminal activity?! we accept (I suppose so) court orders anywhere in Europe but not in goa?!
