i have just returned from egypt and normally suffer from prickly heat especially on the chest area. this year i took one a day antihystamines starting 1 week before going and i also took the homeopathy tablets called sol britanic twice a day 1 week before going and then the entire holiday. i did not suffer one bit at all. i also took urtica homeopathy tablets as a back up in case i got it but never used them on myself. my partner had a bit of prickly heat on his upper arms but 2-3 doses of the urtica tabs done the trick. not sure weather the homeopathy tabs were the reason i never got it or the antihystamines but who cares i was itch free at last.

Excellent result !, doesn't it make such a difference to your holiday when you don't suffer from that terrible itch, itch, scratch, scratch ?

hi, i'm not a sufferer myself, touch wood, but i,ve just been speaking to my sister who is. she said she couldn,t believe it a holiday with sun and no itching !!!. what worked for her was the urtica urens 30c homeopathic capsules and drinking nettle tea. she also rubbed aloe vera gel on her arms. again suppose what works for one person may not for another. hope you all find yourselves a 'cure' - dotty

i have been a sufferer of PH for about 4 yrs and have now just come back from hols without it !
I used to get it all up my arms , around my waist and bottom of legs.
After scouring the net for ages due to the fact PH is sooooooooo irritating i found a couple articles that i went for and they were a success. My main problem was sweatglands blocking up.
1) Biz Buin ALLERGY suncream (apply 20 mins before going out into sun.
2) When sunbathing keep a small towel nearby to wipe away sweat straight away from areas that you know will kick it off.
3) I done 15 mins in sun then under parasol for 30 then back for 15 mins again in sun and so on.
4) apply suncream again about 3 hrs later when in shade after wiping away any sweat and stay shaded for 20 mins.
5) There was a pool shower that i used also to keep cool.
6) the last 3 days i pushed my luck and spent an hour each time in the sun and i think that because my skin was looked after (as above) it stopped it from occurring.

Its sounds a lot but its not really that much hassle ,i ended up with a very good colour and holiday was soooooooooo much more enjoyable.

Hope this helps anyone ;)

Hi

Would you remember which magazine the article was in as I am going to the doctors to try and get them to prescribe me with Prednisolene as I am on a cruise next year as my brother is getting married and really don't want the photos with a rash over my chest.

Thanks

Sharon

Bought myself Magicool plus after it being recommended.Just got back from Tunisia, after about 10 days my prickly heat started on my back so used the spray, and it worked, fantastic,I will be taking abroad with me everytime now.

Also decided to try the Magicool Plus after seeing it recommended on here. Daughter gets quite bad prickly heat, but we were back in Turkey in October and she found the spray really helpful. She did still get prickly heat on our second last day, but she forgot to use the spray that day. The rest of the time, she used it whenever she was sunbathing and it did seem to make a big difference. Would definitely use it again.

Hi there - I havent posted for ages! Where does the time go? Anyway just thought I'd let you know that the Prednisolene from my GP worked a treat - great tan, no prickly heat, no being "ratty" and had the best time! I have to say that my daughter used the Magicool Plus spray for her "heat rash" (not quite the same as prickly heat) and it worked a treat. Glad to hear not sooooo many people seem to have suffered this year :) At least those of us who have found a remedy that works for us, will have a great summer next year - bring it on!! :sun2

I thought I had defeated the dreaded prickly heat by using allergy sun cream, aloe after cun, saunas before I went to open pores etc but still got it in Turkey last summer and the Gambia this Xmas.

I have started to get it in odd places like front of my legs and I realise why now. one day i was watching OH surf in Gambia and sat down with my legs crossed and did the same on a boat in Turkey...crossed my legs. Well, where I must have got a bit sweaty is where the rash appeared.

Note to self maintain a spread eagled position at all times!!! Ha ha. Seriously though it is becoming a big issue for me again so shall try some new remedies next time I go away.

Hi Squirrelchops! Sweat can set off a bout of prickly heat but I didnt find that having saunas made any difference. Ive been having a couple of saunas a week for the last 15 years or so and its never helped me. Get the drugs ;) Seriously, if only taken on holiday they wont do you any harm - happy holidays 2009 :sun2

I have PMLE !
have suffered since i was a child :(
what works for me, is taking betacarotene before & during a holiday

and a factor 20 / 30 spray oil sunscreen

i dont get it nearly as bad as i used to

i take antihistamines if i do start to get a rash

Hi Dragon07 - thats the problem - a lot of people think its just prickly heat which, whilst horrible is not the same as PMLE. My GP has given me steroids for this (named in earlier post) and they make such a difference, its now a pleasure to go on holiday :)

Hi
thank god I have seen this forum!
I am going on holiday in 3 weeks, but am dreading the hellish prickly heat I suffer from.I,ve tried creams,lotions,anti- histamines {absolute crap} aloe vera gel....cools it for about 5 mins, then my arms begin to boil again.
Spent the whole holiday last time with my arms in ice cubes-it was so excruciating...
Now I,ve heard this predisolone and would like to try them, but I am taking a low dose of Ramapril {high blood pressure tablets},plus my gynae is starting me on a short course of hormone treatment for menorragia......yes,my body is knakkered....but I NEED a holiday!
I,m seeing my doc this week about the predisolone, but wondered if anyone could give me some hope in the meantime?
thanks

All you can do is take your GP's advice. The drugs you take may not have any contraindications with the prednislerone, but that is something only your GP can advise on. I take the steroids when I go on holiday, but I am not on any other medication.

I have suffered from this for many years. My gp told me when i was about 20 that it was an allergy to the sun that i had and the only thing i could do was to cover up in the sun.
After suffering for many years even at home in scotland on the rare days we got some sun i went to the my gp and practically begged her to give me predisolone.
She said that there is a risk it can thin your bones and as i am going through the menopause she was a bit wary of prescribing it. It was the first holiday in many years i have been allergy free.
Your gp will advice you of the risks involved.
