I am trying to find reasonably priced travel insurance to cover my in-laws but most companies that cover people over 65 limit the trip to 30 days or so. The long stay insurance doesn't cover people over 65. They don't have any pre-existing medical conditions and are in reasonable health. He is 73, she is 69 and I need cover for a trip of 103 days.

I have tried the companies listed on this page but as I said above, they either provide cover for older people or long stays but not both. The cheapest quote I have found so far (and there haven't been many) is for £617. If anybody out there can help I would appreciate it.

Does anybody know if i will have to declare that i broke my leg 13 weeks prior to my holiday to Majorca to my insurance company? :(

If you do declare it they will tell you that any condition that arises which is directly attributable to your leg injury is not covered. If you don't declare it the small print may state that you are not covered for anything (failure to disclose a pre-existing condition). Depends on the policy. If I were in that position I would carefully read the small print and if in doubt I personally would call them and ask. Of course the problem will only arise when you make a claim. I personally had a successful claim for a postponed trip because of my brother-in-law's death. The trip was booked 3 months prior, yet the insurance company wanted a testimony from his doctor that the condition causing his death had not existed at the time of booking. I have this picture of me not ever leaving home in case someone dies in the future. They will refuse a claim on almost any grounds in my experience.

My flights and passport are in my maiden name (I haven't had my name changed on my passport as I plan to let it expire first).

My hotel is booked in my married name (I got married there so they realise I am married!)

Which name do I book my travel insurance in?

I would think as your documentation is all in your maiden name, that's the one to go with.

I think that's what I'm going to go with. Thanks Milly_Molly. I will see if I can put a note on it somewhere saying "Also known as Mrs S"

I just don't want to invalidate it before I've even taken it out!

Hi, can anybody help me with an insurance query as I'm a bit worried about what I should do?

I'm going on holiday to the east coast of America in September. At the time when we booked our holiday we took out travel insurance with Thomas Cook. At the time of booking, my husband had two medical conditions - depression and sleep apnea. As he is on medication for his depression and it's not currently causing him any problems, it didn't occur to me to mention this when arranging the travel insurance. I did however phone up the insurance company to ask about the sleep apnea and this was okay. I just wondered if we should have told the insurance company about his depression?

Also, in the last few weeks he has been unwell and as a result of this he had to have a medical investigation at the hospital. We are still not sure why he was ill, we think it was just a nasty bug but when he was sent to the hospital, the doctors discovered polyps in his bowel. They have been removed and the indication that we have been given is that these are benign. But I don't know whether I need to disclose the fact that he's been ill or about these polyps to the travel insurance company? Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Never, ever, give an insurance company the grounds for refusing your claim, especially if going somewhere like the USA where healthcare is very expensive. In my experience, insurers regard any condition that requires you to take regular medication to be a pre-existing condition that should have been disclosed to them. It won't necessarily make any difference to the premium when you do disclose - I have two that I've always disclosed and one has always been ignored and the other for the first time ever resulted in an additional payment of £5! Probably what it would cost to buy the tablets over the counter on a private prescription. As I have no excess on that particular policy I suspect that the additonal fiver was to cover what they would have to pay out if I forgot to take those pills with me!

Similarly, most insurers T&Cs say that you must notify them of any changes in your health status since the policy was taken out. The fact that he's ahd this investigation carried out and the polyps were found to be benign could well not effect the policy at all. However, should something happen while you are in the States that cvould be linked to this investigation then they would be in their rights to refuse to pay out any claim.

Better safe than sorry in these circumstances - if it was me I'd tell them - I've seen what medical bills in the US can add up to.

Hi and welcome to HT!

You absolutely MUST tell them about the depression and about the polyps being removed. Also about anything you have visited the doctor about in the last 5 years or so and possibly longer. Many insurers won't cover depression. Some will give you a policy, but exclude cover for depression, others won't even give you a policy. The http://www.nationwide.co.uk does cover depression in some circumstances.

Have a read of THIS TOPIC written by someone who deals with medical claims in Florida.

Caroline - you must inform them. If you're lucky you will just need to pay a little extra to cover these conditions.

Can anyone recommend an insurance company which covers Cruises, I have been on a few websites but can't find if they cover cruises - not sure where to look on the web-page.We are going on one in October and haven't sorted insurance yet. Didn't realise that some insurance companies don't cover cruises!

I have an annual policy with http://www.nationwide.co.uk and when I asked them last they covered cruises. You will get their number on the site then I would recommend calling them to make sure.

You really should have taken our insurance as soon as the cruise was booked. If you found that you were unable to travel through illness or injury then you would have lost the cost of the cruise without insurance.

Very relieved! :)

Many thanks for the update Caroline. I'm delighted you are covered. Just make sure you get that in writing from the insurers before you travel.

Can I ask who you are insured with?
