Hello,

I have read a few posts and believe if i was to state my Flight date/time/number that you will be able to provide information on what type of plane it will be. Does it have premium, extra leg room, seat back tv.

Here goes.

20/7/09 - Newcastle - Sanford - MON365

27/07/09 - Sanford - Newcastle - MON364

Any information will be much appreciated.

Kind regards

Kevin

Welcome onboard :tup
NCL-SFB-NCL (MON365/4) are operated by an Airbus A330-200. Refer to our What Aircraft? thread for further aircraft details. There's a premium cabin available as an upgrade as well as extra legroom seatings. Details of these are on Monarchs website. Economy doesn't have seat back IFE.

PORX,

We'd need your flight details before advising. You'll find more details and answers to your questions on on our What Aircraft? thread. Bmi are likely to use an Airbus A320-200 and Monarch an A321-200.

Monarch's films for flights during May and June 2009 are made from a selection of one of the following:

Outbound

Valkyrie
Yes Man
Bolt*

Inbound

Inkheart*
Last Chance Harvey
Marley and Me

Anybody travelling on the A330 will be able to watch one or more of the following films:

Outbound

The Wrestler
Bride Wars
Slumdog Millionaire
The Tale of Despereaux*

Inbound

Defiance
Revolutionary Road
Seven Pounds
Bedtime Stories*

* denotes films normally shown with higher number of children on flights

As well as a film being shown, you will also have the opportunity to watch popular TV programmes such as The Simpsons, Gavin & Stacey, My Family, Black Adder etc. depending on the duration of your flight and how long the chosen film lasts.

CazB, I am sorry to hear about your experience with the check-in staff you have experienced. I will try my best to explain my understanding of how seats may have been allocated. I must admit that cabin crew do not normally get involved in the process of allocating seats (until passengers have boarded the plane and then request to swap), although having spent quite some time as a Travel Agent I may be able to offer an explanation.

Since you say that you booked through Thomas Cook, the chances are that your flight is a charter flight. Just in case, you are unfamiliar with the difference (as many people are) between a charter and a schedule flight, then I can tell you that a charter flight is one where a tour operator (i.e. Thomas Cook in your case) "charters" (or hires) an aircraft to fly their passengers to a particular destination. In the same way, I or you could charter a plane to fly ourselves and a group of people to take us on a trip around the world... if we had the money to do so of course.

Many tour operators will want to make as much in ancillary revenue as possible and so nowadays one way of doing this is by offering pre-bookable seats. Pre-bookable seats do not mean pre-allocated (i.e. you know which seat number you will be sat in) but rather that you and the people you are travelling with will be guaranteed to sit together. For this reason, I guess that it may be that either Thomas Cook hands a seating plan to the handling agent at check-in of the respective airline or, and probably more likely, that a plan of where everyone is sitting on the flight is drawn up beforehand by the handling agent for the airline themselves... thus you are unable to request a particular seat. Most charter flights booked through a tour operator that do not own the airline operating the flight do not allow seat requests other than extra legroom and pre-bookable seats.

I do not know what limitations are placed on check-in staff and I do not know why it would be so difficult for them to swap you around with somebody else if that is what you ask for. However, do remember that it will mean them swapping not only you but also the rest of your party along with the people who will have to move. When a flight is busy or full, I imagine this is not always the easiest thing to do, especially when the check-in staff have a limited time to check everybody in.

Being sat in extra legroom seats by the way does not necessarily involve you sitting at an exit seat and so you may well be able to request extra legroom despite your medical condition. I would need to know more information about your flight to let you know what the seating arrangement is likely to be on your flight and to advise you further on this.

Whilst on the issue of seating, and in case you do happen to be travelling on a Monarch schedule flight (i.e. a flight sold and operated by Monarch themselves and not chartered by another company), it is necessary for people with a medical condition and who have specific seating requirements to obtain a doctor's note to show that they would require extra legroom seating or otherwise and that without this they would be affected detrimentally in some way. Once Monarch has received a note such as this, it can be kept on file for future flights (for up to 12 months, I think) and will need to be taken onboard with you as proof to the cabin crew.

However, I will also point out that Monarch cabin crew will always do their utmost to try to accommodate your needs whenever possible. Cabin crew do not know where everybody is sat until everyone has boarded the aircraft and so they will be unable to move you from your seat until everybody has boarded. The best thing for you to do should you have a request to move is to make it known to a member of cabin crew once you are seated. They will then most likely make you aware that they will need to wait until boarding has finished and then let you know if there are any seats available for you to move to. Please also be aware that once boarding has been completed, there is a great effort made to by all the cabin crew to make sure that your flight departs as quickly as possible and so this can be quite a busy time so do not be offended if there isn't time to move you straight away. However, if you do think they have forgotten about you then do not be afraid to ask again. On the other hand, there is sometimes a small delay on the ground due to reasons beyond the control of cabin crew, and then it is much easier to accommodate you more suitably.

I hope this goes some way to explaining your problems at check-in and ways you may be able to avoid this in future. If anybody has any further questions then please do not hesitate to ask.

PORX,

MON3008/9 are operated by an Airbus A321-200, although Air Finland have covered some recently flights with a Boeing 757-200. Things should be back to normal when you fly though. Details on how to book extra legroom seating is on Monarchs website.

Thank you for the reply. I have phoned Monarch and asked for an aisle seat due to my mobility problems and was informed if I telephone a week before departure with my blue badge number they will try to accommodate me.

The flight is a ZB so not chartered, oh well hopefully this time I may be okay.
Thanks again.

bowmanor,

MAN-SSH-MAN (MON3726/7) are operated by an Airbus A300B4-605R normally. However odd flights are covered by the Airbus A330-200, but expect the A300B4. You'll find further aircraft information on our What Aircraft? thread. These don't have seat back IFE. It normally operates MON644/5 (Malaga) beforehand.
