Pargaluvva, you also need to check with the airport too - it doesn't matter if BMI will let you carry on a case plus handbag as handluggage if the airport refuses to allow you through security with more than one bag. Judith clearly struck lucky at Gatwick recently - on the busy weekend morning in July that I passed through Gatwick on route to Cuba, they were enforcing the one bag rule with a vengeance. Aa well as insisting that you had to use one of their plastic bags for liquids - I was sent away to re-pack mine which were already in a 20x20cm bag but which was clearly different to the ones they were issuing.

I think the answer to handbags/cabin bags is leave plenty of room in your hand luggage bag and don't get upset when the jobsworthies decide to take their boredom out on you, just be in a good mood and go with the flow. I must admit the security staff were extremely polite and patient even when they found I had left a small bottle of antibacterial gel in my handbag.
I will be flying back into Gatwick at Christmas so I'll make sure to be ready for anything!!
Judith
Inconsistency seems to be the problem at Gatwick
I agree with the inconsistency problem, Judith.
Wouldn't it be great if ALL airports and ALL airlines sang from the same hymn sheet so that we'd all know exactly what the regulations were and could comply instead of getting it wrong by accident.
Of course there would still be people who would try to take more bags than allowed.
Judith stated that the security staff were polite, but thats not to say all the staff will be so polite, i'm sure many customers/passengers are polite but perhaps some could do with being tasered.
I declare an interest in that my wife works in security , and when she tells me how some of the customers/passengers kick-off it really angers me at why people should have to put up with this, you could say that that she gets treated inconsistently. of course there's inconsistency, if 80,000 people go through they're going to have different feelings about different issues ,
There are much wider issues for security staff to deal with than whether someone has a small handbag alongside their regulation sized hand luggage and i would guess that if you approached security in a co-operative attitude and followed their simple requests and talked to them as a fellow human being then the attitude and service would be reciprocated. if you want to treat them as a "jobsworthy" then you will probably find things a little different. I often wonder if people have this "oh they're a jobsworthy" attitude when going through foreign airports? they have the same rules/regs, but also are equipped with truncheons, pistols, cuffs, i don't see many having a quibble when given a request, funny how a uniform and weapons makes people do what they are supposed to be doing.
I think that we have to accept that "inconsistency" is a way of life , every day we see inconsistency , we all treat people differently we all get treated differently , my football team is very inconsistent, the weather today was inconsistent , perhaps we want robots doing everything!!!
As I live abroad most of my travelling by air is from foreign airports and I have had experience of staff behaving in an officious way in many places, and these people I regard as jobsworths. The fact that they may be armed doesn't alter my view.
Surely it's not unreasonable to expect that after reading the T&Cs of the airline you're flying with and comply with what it says - you will not have a problem at the airport?
I personally don't mind if I'm allowed to take one piece of hand luggage ot two (I only ever take one anyway as I think it's safer as you've got less to worry about) - I'd just like it to be the same rule across all airports and all airlines - and that's what I mean by inconsistency.
Judith wrote:Of course there is inconsistency in life but we are talking about the security in a major airport, surely all passengers should be treated the same way, it is not up to individual security staff to put their own interpretation on the rules.
Yes of course thats right but security are only really concerned with whats inside your bag and i think all passengers are treated the same by placing their baggage through x-ray and passing themselves through a metal detector archway, thats their job, purpose and they have no other option in doing that consistently, and in your case Judith they found antibac gel in your bag , they weren't bothered by the fact you had a hand luggage and a handbag, thats for the airlines to decide.
It would be far easier if everyone had the same allowances and regs. for hand luggage but ultimately airlines have the final say on what they will allow and obviously they have their reasons.
Everyone has their own experiences of going through different airports and will discuss them on here , but the bottom line is usually a post from David simply advising to check airport and airlines regulations. its no good turning up at an airport and saying so and so on holidaytruths said it would be ok.
I honestly fail to see how travel is so stressful, i think stressful is losing your job/home having a serious illness , queueing for 10 mins here and there isn't stressful. The points made in previous posts about inconsistency are about having to put liquids in a bag that was issued instead of their own and being lucky to carry a handbag through separately, if these trivial issues are enough to justify someone kicking off although not condoning it i find it surprising.
So if someone carries out their specified job by the rules, they're a jobsworth?Judith wrote:.

After flying for close on 50 years and putting up with increasingly long delays often without information, long waits to check in, flights cancelled, rude officious staff and passengers.etc. etc. I often feel stressed and I'm not alone. HT truths contains many posts from people who also find travelling stressfull.
And as for 'Jobsworths' there are many jobsworths in life and some work on airports, I followed a very elderly lady last year through security (not Gatwick) who was a little unsteady on her feet, she was asked to remove her shoes, she had great difficulty taking them off whilst standing up, there was a chair at the other side of the Xray machine and she asked if she may go through and sit down and pass her shoes back, she was told no, she had to remove them before going through. I believe that was an example of a 'jobsworth'.
I'm not aware that I have ever asked David about baggage allowances as I travel frequently and make myself aware of T & C's of the airlines and airports that I use, but I find that writing about my experiences may be of use to someone who doesn't which is why I post on HT.
I'm really not going to waste my time on this this thread anymore, I've noticed in the past when anyone criticises Gatwick you are immediately on the defensive, I would guess due to your wife working there. I have no problem with the airport, it's better than some worse than others.
Judith
Hope you don't mind me asking then, but as you are 'well travelled' and I mean that in the nicest way - I have not travelled overseas for approx 6 years now, first trip after this time is next year. So then there was not so much of an issue with hand luggage etc. I am travelling with First choice, Thomson long Haul, so for stuff like make up (which I understand is considered to be liquid), if they are contained within the plastic bag (can't remember the size)and kept in my handbag generally speaking is this acceptable?
Thanks
I have read recently that talks are in progress to end having to take liquids in a plastic bag, but if and when that will happen I'm not holding my breath. It used to be a lot easier in th old days when you could put all of your makeup and toiletries in one cosmetic bag and carry it in your hand luggage. When I visit the UK I usually use only hand luggage so I have to be careful that I don't break the rules. At the present time the clear plastic bag has to measure 20 x 20cm (approx 8x8inch) you can carry only small sizes of liquids each in a container not to weigh over 100ml. and the total of them all can't exceed 1000ml. If you use any powders they can go seperately, but lipstick and any lotions and potions will go in the plastic bag. You can carry the bag inside your handbag and you will just have to bring it out when you go through security. It will go through XRay seperately to your handbag. I have bought small size containers, I think from Superdrug in the past. I like to have my make up etc with me on long haul journeys but if you don't want to carry them with you they can go in your checked luggage and then need not be in small sizes. Nearer to the date of your travel check the website for the Airport and Airline for up to date rules as they may change. The Airport websites usually have very good descriptions of what you can carry in hand luggage and often include a picture of a plastic bag and the contents allowed.
Have a great holiday.
Why do I think this
Well when I am on territory I know well ,and feel confident about doing things ect there....am well rested and feeling well....I am totaly in control ...am a leader....my nerves are steady and I ooze self belief ...so I present as capable and in no need of assistance.
When going on holiday its a different story...by the time I reach security at the airport I am shattered...having packed a whole familys cases, hand luggage ect, done the usual pre departure worrying about securing house ....and usually just finnished a string of night shifts ...then worrying about taking care of cash passports tickets ect whilst being nagged and pestered by the family about rubish usually...been moaned at because Im doing things right but slower (do I sound familar...)
By time I hit security I feel and am looking quite vunerable....my head is in bits...am a bag of nerves...and I am feeling less than capable...and often feel I need reasuurance that I am doing things right
Each time I have had to go through security the staff have been great.....they have not only answered my questions but continue to help guide and reassure me through the whole proccess....they have righted what Ive done wrong with usually a " dont worry" and a smile.
They in return get a truelly meant thank you from a releived to be through security me.
I present as a vunerable approachable human being who in turn gets help from another human being ..who is on there own home ground and therefore able to give the support I need....one human being to another.
I have also experienced this on returning through the european airports ...I dont see the uniforms truncheons and guns....just other human beings there to do a job....helping us to travel safely....I am trying not to break any rules ect...so have nothing to fear from them...
Yes there will be josworths....but they are still human beings underneath it all....a sorry...a smile...and a genuine request for help or a solution could work wonders....it boosts their ego...re-enforces their need to be taken seriously and underlines there belief that they know the rules ect better than you do...which is usually right....they are regognised as essential and wanted in the progress of things ....once the jobworth in them has been placated the human being peeps out....if the land looks safe it will stay out .....you will have then gained a valuable sourse of knowledge and help..
And yes I am a strange one ...but my friends understand and tolerate me ....tweetie
what you say is probably how many people feel and the situations they encounter everyday.
Judith , your example about the elderly lady is intolerable and this type of thing should not happen in any everyday occurence, i'm sure that people who work in any service point business would not treat people like this, but sadly it happens and Tweetie Pie perfectly summed up about how people treat each other and that if we all try to be more helpful then we all benefit.
You are right that i'm defensive about certain points people make about Gatwick, and i have not hidden the fact that my wife works there, obviously she tells me things about the airport and everyday matters that would not be appropiate to include in my postings, if you want to view it as i defend ANY criticism against Gatwick thats your opinion , but i personally think that i only question and disagree with sweeping generalisations like "inconsistency seems to be the problem at Gatwick"
Judith i have no personal problem with you, and you are an experienced traveller and have obviously built up a wealth of information and its no doubt that other posters on here recognise that by the knowledge you give in your posts ( i haven't read all of them) so i find it a bit sad? that you view some of your travels through airports as being blighted by jobsworthies, i think by using this generalised comment it might make other people who might be new on here to think that is how they are viewed,
As you know my wife works in security and there are many aspects to her job that include customer service, as well as enforcing regulations, they work hard in making sure that holidaymakers and business workers are in-covenienced as little as possible in their job to defend us from things that could possibly happen, perhaps there will be an occasion when someone is asked to put a bag inside a bag! is that really such a big problem? and i will disagree with points like this especially if they are highlighted as being serious and it leads to them being described as jobsworthys.
However she's a well paid "jobsworthy" and i get free parking when i go on holiday, and i don't have to know all the complicated rules as she leads me through security to meet her fellow "jobsworthys" although i don't get any special favours, still have to take of my shoes! and belt! and present my liquids bag (free of charge, courtesy of BAA), quick frisk to make sure i'm awake! and off to Costa for a discounted coffee. is this sort of thing called Karma?
PS , Mods i'm sorry if this is a bit but its linked a little bit? to hand luggage situations in airports. i have no further comment make on this issue as i guess you will think it is off topic.
I am sure there is a whole thread you could make on advice on Gatwick etc, with the experiences that your wife has told you about - I am sure some rather amusing too.
Does anyone know the latest restrictions for taking babies milk aboard plane. My daughters baby is on formula so they normally take dry formula with a bottle of boiled water. Will they be allowed on with that. They could buy made up formula at Boots, (if they do it) but what about the return journey.
The Following Guidelines Are Taken From Direct.gov.uk
You are allowed to take baby food, baby milk and sterilised water in your hand baggage. This includes:
soya milk for babies
sterilised water for the baby (must be in a baby bottle)
formula, breast milk or cow milk specifically for babies
baby food of various consistencies
You are allowed to take enough for the journey. In some cases this may be over 100ml. The adult carrying the baby food or milk may be asked to verify it by tasting.

Trying to get it heated up on the plane wasn't that easy as the airline we travelled with did not heat up baby bottles of milk due to the airlines 'health and safety' procedures.
However, if we wanted to buy a cup of tea for £2.70 we could use the hot water in the cup to heat up the bottle of milk - we refused their 'kind' offer ! Baby drank the milk as it was with no ill effects.

Just Wondering If I Can Carry A Smallish Boombox On Board..It Does Fit In My Hand Luggage.
Thanks x
if security ask you whats inside your bag just be careful how you say it , they might think that you could be french!!! they may ask you to take the boombox out of your bag to be screened separately through the x-ray.
We have booked a Ryanair flight from Liverpool airport to Faro and have purchased the 15kg hold suitcase option but to make sure we stay within the limit does anybody know if it would be OK to buy shampoo/conditioner etc once through check in and put it into our cabin bag as long as it doesn't exceed the 10kg limit?
Many thanks
Tet
It won't be a problem.
