Flight Only / Airline and Airports

You'll be on a 747-400 from the LGW/MAN fleet.

There are a few extra legroom seats that will suit your needs, but these can only be purchased on the day of check in. No normal seat will give you both what you want. The odd two seats at the back will give the window person the legroom, presumably your son doesn't need it as much as you do.

You'll be on either config 2 or config 3 =

snowyboy,

Have you checked out Airline Quality and Car Survey - Flights? Bear in mind reviews are often only posted when passengers have a complaint or something to rave about so can be biassed.

Never had any problems with Virgin Atlantic before and not having used them for a couple of years we used them twice over the past week. Last week out to BGI and returning this morning from BGI into Gatwick.

No problems with timings - the outbound flight landed well ahead of schedule with the return flight landing about an hour later than planned due to air traffic problems in BGI. Their twilight check-in at LGW and check-in/chill-out in BGI is something good too.

But that is it.

Seats appear to be more cramped (not too sure whether they have decreased seat pitch?), food has taken a turn for the worse, service is skimped on and you can clearly see that they are cutting cost left, right and centre. Perhaps that has resulted in them being profitable but it has resulted in us going to try another airline in the future to get across the pond.

Sorry Virgin Atlantic but I expect more from a scheduled airline. It is a sad state of affair when a charter airline such as Thomson provides such a better product for a cheaper price.

It's not that VS have reduced their seat pitch, it's the same as it's always been in economy (average 31"). It's just the charter airlines have increased their game and offer 33" as standard on long haul these days (Monarch being the exception).

I think Virgin have really cut back on their product over the last few years. I think people might have been willing to put up with hard cramped seating in the past because of their excellent service, food and entertainment systems. But with poor service (one example being noisy cabin crew joking and gossiping throughout night flights when passengers were trying to sleep.) basic tastless food and entertainment systems that often break down, their reputation as the Airline of choice has really disappeared. Airline review sites have many reports from members stating they will not fly any more with Virgin.

We were unfortunate to sit at the back of the plane (by choice - we selected these seats - big mistake) and on both the way out and back by the time it came to meal selection there was no selection. And that is for all meals. You would have throught that if you don't give a customer a choice of main meal, when it gets round to the second meal, you give these customer first choice and those that had a choice for their first meal what-ever is left for the second meal. Not so.

Similar embarising situation that by the time they came round for breakfast drinks they were out of orange juice and the flight attendant had to go and "nick" some from upper class.

Service on the overnight flight was nihil. No drink service at all. Meals with one drink offered, cabin lights dimmed and no staff to be seen for 4 hours.

Meals were bland. No more cheese and crackers. No more pretzels. No more hot towels. Drinks had to be requested from the gally rather than offered.

Virgin really has to up their game if they don't want to lose customers. There is choice out there and we will be trying the others offerings.

Considering going to India with Newmarket Travel and flights to Delhi from Heathrow are with Virgin, VS300 & VS301. I know this will be on a A340-300 and the configuration is 2-4-2. Can I book my seat with Virgin to ensure I get the pair of window seats i.e. the 2 in the 2-4-2?

Cheers,

Jim

Considering flying Heathrow to Delhi on Virgin and have been reading the reviews on airline quality etc. I appreciate that most reviews are competed by people who are dissatisfied but Virgin really do get slated. My biggest worry is not getting the seats we pre-book and this seems to be quite common. If we book 2 seats in the 2 part of the configuration why would Virgin switch them, yet it seems to happen a lot. In addition the IFE seems to be universally slagged off. Is Virgin really that bad, I could do with some reassurance?

I have just booked our holiday with Virgin Holidays and can get into the Virgin Atlantic seat plan part to prebook seats for the four of us no problem. Were going from Manchester to Barbados in June. The question is,if I prebook seats do I have to use online checking? Its just that I will be driving down from Scotland the day before to stay at the airport so online checkin won't be possible and I will need to do just standard checkin.Does that mean I won't be able to prebook seats online and just turn up at the airport and hope for the best or if I do prebook will they be honoured at standard checkin.Any advice would be much appreciated :que

I'm not sure about the answer to your specific question but assuming that you are flying from Gatwick don't forget that you will be able to use their twilight check-in service the evening before. Ever so easy and no queuing in my experience - dump the checked in baggage and go straight through to departures the following morning. Just remember to pack your toothbrush and a clean pair of pants in your handluggage!

Hi,thanks for the reply. We are going from Manchester and I don't think they have twilight checkin which is a pity.Ive emailed Virgin to see what they say, because ideally i would like to pick seats now and turn up at the airport and get what I had picked instead of taking a chance that we are split up,which I hope is won't happen as we are 2 adults and 2 children

We've done the pre select your seat before. Didn't have to do online check in and when we physically checked in, the seats we pre-booked were the ones we got.
