just printed out the holiday tools currency converter it says £1.03 is 80 rupees.is that the official rate or what you get at the moment in goa
There are a couple of cash machines in the middle of Calangute but you might have a problem withdrawing R22,000. If you try and withdraw that in one go it will probably refuse but you might be able to get smaller amounts but in multiple goes. I seem to remember not being able to take 10,000 but getting 2x 5000. I haven't a clue what the maximum daily limit is but depending on the exchange rate at the time 22,000 is near the limit in the UK. cheers Dave
Its the official interbank rate you wont get that rate, there is more detailed information here
thanks dave,b ut would the atm be open at 5am early morn,i know there is a atm booth in calangute high st nr jonnys the chemist (with a security guard posted outside, but unsure whether it would be open that time in the morn, thanks again
Must admit I take a wad of £'s cash just in case the machines are out of order etc.as well as the Nationwide card. I think Nationwide charge, albeit a lot smaller percentage than other banks, for withdrawals outside the E.U. now.Dave
im same dave, takes all sterling cash!just thought id be better off paying in rupees
They will not take 22,000 rupees from you at that time in the morning - or tell them that you are not going to do that as it is not possible to get your rupees from the ATM at that time. These people are understanding - just give them a small sterling deposit and tell them that you will get the rest when you have had a rest and gone to the ATM,
Don't forget to inform your bank before you go....sometimes they will freeze your account if money starts going out in another country!
Limit on a Nationwide debit card is 300 pounds a day so 22000 INR is just over the limit, max I have drawn is 14000. can't think any hotel would insist you pay on checkin.
If you look at the Nationwide web site they state you do not need to inform them if you are going to use your card outside of the UK

Handy to know, thanks Silentman.
they said you dont need to tell us but they still blocked our card .. then when we rang them for Goa what do you think they told us ..YOU HAVE TO TELL US WHEN YOUR GOING AWAY .....I give up colleen
I posted a few days back about problems with my Nationwide debit card and the ATM machines... I know my card is OK because I got money out in a money changers yesterday but it added 3% to the cost! I do think NW need to be taken to task over this.... but how?
Are you sure you used the debit card and not the credit card by mistake as they are very similar in colour. I did that in France and it's really annoying, especially as they charge interest from the day you withdraw the money on top of the 3%.
I am starting to get a bit concerned with all the problems people are having with Nationwide Debit Cards, I have been using mine for over ten years to withdraw cash all over the world and have never had a problem anywere apart from using the different type of machines in Goa which I put down to my lack of understanding on how to use the local machines. Just a thought but how efficient are the Goan banks at refilling the machines
Yes it was the debit card that was used. They would probably have blocked my credit card even though they know I am in India as thy have done before on a purchase...the reason given to me was that India is an unsafe country when using credit cards.

If you got money out using your debit card at a money changers then as you say your card must be ok, so its hardly Nationwides fault, did you read my post on Goan ATM'S ?
I have a Nationwide Debit Card and always use it for obtaining cash in Goa, I also have had problems, most of the machines are different to ours you dont leave the card in the machine, you insert the card and almost straight away remove it, if its read the card ok you then procced with the transaction, the card has to be the right way up and the right way round, its confusing, there have been times when I have tried up to six times before it worked. you could ask the security guard some of them are helpful.
I have read your posts and tried your ideas but with no success. However will continue putting it in whenever we are in town. For me these problems did not start until April and that time my debit card did not work but my credit card did but that costs more. NW have told me to use the card in the afternoons here as the machines are often under maintenance in the early hours in the UK! I think perseversnce may be the key.
Has anyone used a FairFx preloaded Euro card in Goa? Works well in Europe (obviously!) but, FairFx say it can be used in other countries with minimal transaction charges and It would be a good alternative to 'wads of UKP' I usually end up with. However as with a lot of things in India, it would be good to hear of someone who had used it successfully, before depending on it for a two week holiday!
For those NW debit card users, we have contacted NW and have been told that some ATMs Worldwide are not reading the chips on the cards issued this year - advice is to try a number of different ATMs. With this news I don't think that it is wise to rely on the card, We are taking GBP cash and TC's.
