The Viewing point at Manchester, has anyone been very recently? Wondering what conditions under foot are like at the moment (who would think I'd need to ask this in the middle of "summer" ), its it welly bobs or normal footware ?

Thanks

Steve

Ps can't remember the cost, is it per person or per car ?

If its the aviation viewing park your after it is now called the Runway visitors park. Details are on Manchester airports website.
Cost is now £12 per car.Visitors on foot free entry.
They have just sent me an email and they are doing a special offer of £5 per car after 5pm from 2nd August until 2nd September

Cheers for that (now I've found my post, after its been moved into another topic ! :que )

Last time I went it was a big grassed area at the side of the runway, won't that be muddy? (want to get upto the fence for some good photos)

If that's your reason for going, you're better off going to the south side of the runways where you'll get better views (subject to time of day and weather) and best of all it's free for as long as you want! If the sun shines, it'll be on your back rather than in your face so much better for photography. For viewing locations, have a look on TAS.

Angle of the sun hasn't really been a problem in the Manchester area for the past couple of weeks! And judging by the current weather waders might be the order of the day!! Meanwhile, the hose pipe ban continues.....

Ah excellent maybe for another time, but this trip (besides getting me and my bro out of our respective houses to do a bit of plane watching etc) is for my brothers son who has recently gone plane mad (flight simulator on computer, the ones that come with a manual the size of a phone book) making models, reading books (much like my brother was at his age).. and he really wants to see concorde, can you still go and walk around it ? is it still in the same place or has it been moved to somewhere else under cover ?? I know there is a tour of it but its booked up this week, and booked most of next except for when my brother is at work !!

thanks

AskCy,

Concorde is now inside a hangar to protect it from the elements. You have to pay to go and walk around it now. You can see it through the window though. The tour is well worth doing. I spent 2 hours on her the other year, 2/3 the length of time she took to cross the pond from LHR-JFK! A former RAF Nimrod is now on static display, alonf with the Trident, RJX and DC10 nose section. They all worth a look as well.

so thats £12 for parking and how much per person to walk around the covered area ? - If this goes well tomorrow I think we will try and do the full techy tour of Concorde at some point.

thanks

AskCy,

Everything is on Manchester Airports website. You have to be on a tour to have a look inside.

thanks but I can't see mention of walking around it charges ?

AskCy,

That's because you can't just go in the hangar and have a walk around.

Ah missunderstood "to look inside" thought you mean to look inside the aircraft rather than look inside the hanger !

Another Question on the theme of visiting an airport (so hoping its right in here)

Scanners ?

My brother still has my old hand held one from years and years ago... (nothing new, nothing fancy just a basic scanner, picked up taxi's, planes, some old mobiles etc). will it still pick aircraft up now or has everything gone digital and encrypted ? If it will what frequencies should we be looking at ?

Steve
Reply
AskCy,

Bear in mind the use of radio devices to listen to ATC aren't strictly legal. The police will generally turn a blind eye to them for this purpose though. Frequencies are as follows:

Approach: 119.40 / 118.575
Radar: 121.35
Tower: 118.625
Ground: 121.85
ATIS: 128.175

Some non-standard frequenicies are also used.

They are the same frequencies (108-137 MHz) that have been used for years in aviation. Given all aircraft need to have access to these frequencies (openly for situational awareness), they are remaining analogue and non-encrypted, unlike other services.

Thanks Darren, just got back shop was full of scanners so presume they are turning a very blind eye ! Brothers scanner is missing its aerial so it picked nothing up !.. and they were a bit too steep for a once in a while trip... however still had a great day out.. They had free and open acces to the Monarch DC10 front end, and the 2 other parked planes so we got to look around in them as well as watching the planes coming in and out.. Brothers lad was besides himself, had to keep a tight grip to stop him running like mad to the next thing !.... lol

Ps looked like they were setting up for some sort of wedding party in the hanger under Concorde !!!!

Manchester Airport have obviously wised up to people using mobile phones to minimise the time spent in the car park when picking up passengers, so now they have a monkey with a screwdriver "working" on the ticket validating machine by the barrier. It then only needs one car to arrive at the barrier without a paid up ticket. That person CAN'T pay for their ticket, so the queue starts to back up and pretty soon NOBODY has a valid ticket because they are stuck in the queue longer than the twenty minute free period.
They are a bunch of crooks.

ColinWWW,

I think that's a little unfair and certainly not my experience, and a little offensive to the person carrying out his/her job in rectifying a problem. If there's a problem with a machine, simply use another one, queues permitting. There's more than one! This isn't done on purpose to make peoples tickets run out of time, machines do sometimes go wrong and require repair.
