Whilst in Goa I used a debit card at HDFC, Bank of Baroda and Axis Bank, Nationwide charged me on 10,000 INR

None-UK Commission fee of £2.50 to £2.60 (depending on exchange rate)
None-UK Cash withdrawal fee of £1.00

HDFC Bank showed a message on screen that none Indian cards would be charged 200 INR per transaction but Nationwide did not charge this, exchange rate was 76 to 78 in Jan/Feb

What I found interesting was that although I could not withdraw more that 10,000 INR I could make 2 withdrawals for the same amount at the same time

Depending on when your going you could get an ICICI bank repaid travel card. Load up last 170 days but can only load up 50,000r max ! (about £560) Could get one each though. ;)

Would suggest just make sure your bank balance is in good order so you can make withdrawals through your debit/credit card. Sorry if this seems an obvious response.
