Lane, we use the jungle formula plug-ins. Used them in Ovacik in Turkey last year and they were brilliant. We are getting more for our holiday this year. We also use the Jungle Formula extra strength lotion for putting on before we go out in the evining. (even use it on Katie 8) and none of us were bitten last year.

Hi Katiesmum,

Read your post with interest because my hubby uses Jungle Formula extra strength and never gets bitten either! Anyway, this place has it on special offer at the mo: http://www.ifsogo.com

I don't use jungle formula as I have sensitive skin. I haven't had a reaction to it....just haven't dared try it just in case, but I noticed you used it on your daughter: was it all ok?

Thanks!

Hi everyone, don't know if it was just luck but we had one plug in mozzie spray, & a silver coloured can of repellant from Boots. We sprayed our ankles and wrists every night prior to going out and never ever got bit. Alas, one night hubby (who is eaten alive at home by them normally) didn't bother and he was bitten loads.

Hi Everyone,

I promised an update on trying out all the different remedies when I returned from Turkey, so here I am!!!!

Having been eaten alive in most holidays before I was determined it wasn't going to happen this year.

I started taking 1 x 1000mg odourless garlic capsules and 4 x 100mg Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) two weeks before I went. During the holiday I dropped this to 1 x garlic and 2 x vit b1 as I couldn't be bothered taking any more than that.

Most nights after my bath I put on Avon skin so soft as an aftersun, put a dab of citronella oil of my pulse points and just for extra security used Autan family lotion on my arms and legs.

Despite meeting and talking to hundreds and hundreds of people with the most enormous mozzie bites I'm pleased to say that I didn't even get ONE!!!! Yipee I am so pleased.

I don't know exactly what worked or if it was just a combination of everything, but it worked and thats the main thing. It was worth the hassle of taking the pills and the lotions not to get bitten.

Oh except on the last night of our holiday an ant bit me on my little toe! :( Cheeky Bugger!

Thanks for the helpful info Scottishmum :D
I'm going to Turkey for the first time next year, so I'm really worried about mozzies :? I'll copy & paste your info and print it out so I can find it next year!
We're going to Lanzarote 2 weeks today :D and although we've never been bitten in the Canaries before, I've started taking my VitB1 and Garlic today, just in case! I'm also taking anti-histamines for my hayfever at the moment and I'll carry on taking them whilst away to prevent allergic reaction to any bites. We'll have a plug-in in the bedroom and one in the main living area of the apartment too.
For next year I'm going to buy those wristbands and take some citronella candles with me to use on the balcony and in the room in the evening. I'll also be buying some spray - either Autan as you suggest, or Jungle Formula, or the Boots silver 50% DEET one.
The things you have to do...

david - last year we had a one-bedroomed apartment (and we'll have the same again this year) I use one in the bedroom, near the door, and one in the main living area, near the balcony doors. Pop the tablet in before you go out at night and leave it in until morning. Best to unplug it in the morning though - they get a bit hot!
We stayed in a hotel later last summer, just one room, so just one plug-in.

Hi, sorry about delay in replying to questions asked to me earlier on this posting.

Lane - We use the liquid plug-ins and last year had a 1 bedroomed apartment with the bedroom upstairs and sofa bed downstairs in the lounge/kitchen. We used a plug-in in each room. This year we have 2 bedrooms and lounge/kitchen area so we are taking 3. The liquid lasts for ages and they were not empty after a 2 week holiday. Plug them in before you go out in the evening then turn them off in the morning.

LisaMJ - Katies skin is very sensative, yet I used the Jungle Formula Extra strength on her including her face (I didn`t slap loads on, just put some into my hands and ran them over her legs, arms, body and similar to her cheeks and forehead) she had no reaction at all. We also did the same in Egypt earlier this year, not that we needed it as didn`t see any mozzies but just to be sure, and again she was fine.

Another tip we were given by the Turkish manager of the apartments we stayed in last year, was to get a can of fly/mozzie spray from the supermarket (cost less than a pound) and as you leave to go out for the evening spray around the rooms and then close the doors and windows, if anything is lurking it will be dead in a few mins. Just take care coming back in, don`t leave the door wide open cos them little bliters get in any way they can.

Going to Akyaka in Turkey near a river lots of greenery so I am assuming there will be mozzies in abundance, will be doing the same thing and hopefully it will work.

LisaMJ thanks for that posting will check it out, normally go to Boots where you can get plug-ins and Jungle formula on a 3 or 2.

Hi LisaMJ, just looked at that link you gave, and as far as I can remember from May of this year the prices look very similar to Boots and you can get 3 for the price of 2, and I`m sure you can mix lotion and plug-ins on the offer. We are going for 18 days so need 3 of each.
