Would certainly recommend the Lassi/Argostoli area. Have stayed in this area 3 times - although about 15 years ago when Lassi wasn't built up at all. One of my sons stayed in Lassi with his girlfriend (now wife) about 6 years ago and said that Lassi was now quite built up...even had pavements! There are two splended sandy beaches - Platis Yialos and Makris Yialos- Makris means long and Platis means wide. Argostoli is a short taxi ride away or walk depending just how far into Lassi you are. We usually hired a car for a few days, drove up to Fiscardo, Assos is well worth a visit, Melissani Lake and Drogarati Caves a must. Myrtos beach, where they did the filming for the detonation of the bomb in Captain Corelli's Mandolin, worth a trip too!

My husband and I have visited Kefalonlia many times we really adore the Island we stay in Lixouri and have to do it independantly as it is not in any brouchures as a lot of people find it dull but it suits two 66 year olds and many more regulars we meet there every year both younger and older.
Agastoli is a perfect place you can get the ferry to Lixouri and look around also the bus station in Lassie which will take you all over very cheaply wwith a 14 year old perhaps Lassie woulddd be a perfect base
but just hope your holiday turn out fine

Skala is a village with a heart and would be perfect for a teenager as well as its parents (assuming the teenager has basic social skills and is willing to make friends!). There are always plenty of kids of all ages around - both locals and tourists - and they all look after each other. There are lots of places for them to meet and hang out. The (adult) locals know exactly what is going on everywhere and so it's safe to let kids out and about.

Lassi is a string of hotels and restaurants and shops. I'm trying to think of something else to say about Lassi!! I wouldn't take a teenager there.

We took a girl of just turned 11 and a boy nearly 9 to the Skala area and they loved it, I suppose it depends on the child or the teenager really as to what suits them best.

We are thinking of going to Kef. this summer.
We are looking for a good sandy beach close to a resort.
Can anyone recommend a suitable resort for a family.
Thanks in advance,
Kev

For a family + sandy beach I suspect I'd be looking towards Scala, but so many things to consider, such as ages of children, type of accommodation & whether or not you'll have your own transport.

I'm also sure that you'll have others along very shortly, pointing you in the direction of their own favourites.

One thing for certain..... you'll have a great time in Keffie, wherever you go ;-)

Thanks for the comments moonraker.

We have considered Skala, but after reviews of the beach stated it was shingle its put us off as we do like a sandy beach, especially with kids.

We always hire a car for the majority of our holiday and have considered accom. near the sandy turtle beach ( 3 km from Skala) but don't want to be reliant on it every time we need a shop or traverna.

Any comments/recommendations greatly appreciated.
Cheers Kev.

Hello,

It depends what you want really.

Lassi has the best beaches on the island which are very sandy, deep and long - it's also the most lively resort. That's not to say that it's full of nightclubs or anything like Faliraki but the beaches are fairly busy compared to other parts of the island.

Xi beach on the Lixouri pennisular is good too but it's about 15 mins drive from Lixouri itself. There are some tavernas, shops and hotels down by the beach though so you wouldn't have to rely on the car completley.

I have to say I love Skala and Turtle Bay (Mounda Beach) is breathtaking - if it was me I'd probably stay in Skala and use the car to get to Turtle bay - having the best of both worlds!

Hope this helps.

Dear Kevn39,

If you are intent on going to Kefalonia then Scala is probably a good choice. We stayed there 3 years ago in the Paradise Apartments. They are still on the Kosmar website, http://www.kosmar.co.uk
We had the downstairs 2 bedroomed apartment, fairly basic but comfortable. We found the Island fairly expensive when compared to others we have visited. The apartments we had did not have a pool, but there were plenty in the resort. Some of them however charged between 3 and 5 Euro's / person for the privilege. For a family of 4 that's quite alot in my opinion, especially when other Island resorts we have been to do not charge, they just want you to buy drinks/food from the poolside bar.
There is plenty of choice of bars and taverna's, and a square in the middle of the village where there are swings and slides for younger children. All in all we had a good holiday, hire a car and visit the other parts of the Island..3 days should be enough.

I wouldn`t call Skala a true shingle beach, it`s more like a skightly gritty sand. However, just outside Skala there is a really beautiful sandy beach at Mounda. It`s about a half hour`s walk, about 5 minutes by car or taxi. We actually stayed there, in some studios right on the beach, it was like being in Paradise.

I would reiterate what people say here. Scala is definitely the best place to stay with children. The beach is a mix of sand/shingle but is less commercialised than, say Lassi. It is a wonderful beach, safe and with water sports and pedaloes for the children. Recommend Tara Beach Hotel right on the beach and 2 mins walk to all the tavernas in the evening. It is a wonderful island and highly recommended.

Thanks for the replies and recommendations.

It's a big thumbs up for Skala then.

The kids have already started packing.

The easy bit is next then, all I need to do is book it. :hyper

Can't wait to visit Kef.

Thanks again everyone.

Only done a day trip to Kefalonia, from Zakynthos, but two places worth a visit are the Melissani cave and the Drongorati cave.
Melissani cave is an underground lake. You go down steps to reach it, but once down you find that it is open to the elements as the roof caved in years ago.
Drongorati cave is quite a sight. the accoustics in the cave are so good that they hold concerts in it.

Been to Kefalonia once before, going back this year and will be staying Lassi. Didn't stay there last time so can't recommend anything in Lassi yet.

Caves are definately worth a look.

Hire a car and have a drive around, Myrtos beach is an absolute must.

Argostoli is also worth a few hours to look around the shops and have a meal.

Assos is another must do whilst you are there. Beautiful tiny little place with a couple of good restaurants.

Sami is also worth a look.

All in all, just enough to keep you busy if you want and also quiet enough to chill out for a few days! Can't wait til May!!

Best thing to recommend about Lassi is to move out, no only joking if you like a relatively noisier linear tourist resort based along a main road with bars etc. its fine place.
Personally i would recommend a taxi over the hill or a short walk via the coast road around to the great cosmopolitan capital Argostoli.
As previous replies make sure you get a hire car out and visit the real Greek delights which abound on the island.

"Myrtos beach is an absolute must"
I'll second that.
You'll want to stay there for the whole day 8)

Can anyone suggest a quiet resort to stay on this island? Thinking of going with my hubby and 14 year old daughter. We would like a smaller hotel/apartment complex with a good selection of restaurants in the area. Dont want clubs and discos, just somewhere quiet to relax and chill. Also, anyone know what the weather temperatures are like end of May early June? Thanks.
