Driving in france is a doddle. Infact I love the french roads. 10x better than ours

LHD is'nt really necessary and you'll find it hard to re-sell later.

Good luck and enjoy you lucky things.

......My first experience of driving abroad was travelling through France and a bit of Germany in our camper van, some years ago....wasn't really looking forward to it , but it turned out to be much better than expected; sure, you have to concentrate a lot more - but thats not a bad thing anyway - it helps to talk out loud what you're about to do - and I also put an arrow on the steering wheel, pointing RIGHT.
I kept off the main roads, rural France is SO nice.....and found Municipal campsites to be generally cheaper and more plentiful than here....
So, right hand drive is no problem, unless you do a great deal of driving overseas.

dogfish reformed electrons in the post Camping/Campervanning round Europe next year

Hi Folks
Hope some of you guys can help me.

Myself and boyfriend are intending to travel round Europe next year from June - October by car/van and we intend to buy some sort of vehicle that we can sleep in if necessary but also we have a good tent and will do a fair bit of camping.

Campsites are so available for any sort of camping
there are even places in most towns for Campervans (and ONLY campervans) to pull into for the night

First question - I think we should get a left hand drive van/minibus style of vehicle as most if not all of Europe drives on the opposite side of the road to the UK. My partner however disagrees and thinks we should just get a right hand drive minibus type thing. Please please can anyone who has experience of driving and camping in Europe confirm that left hand drive would be the more sensible option and why. I need to back up my aguement after all!!

I tow a caravan with a standard UK vehicle and find the French roads fine once you get used to using the "other side of the road" it's easy, We are quite experienced European driver now and smile when we leave the docks watching the first timers driving very apprehensively they soon realise it's easy and most soon catch us up There are only a few road signs different such as the yellow diamond which says you have right of way

You will find that camping in France & Spain is so much more pleasant and cheaper than in the UK. We have now had two long stints away for our summer holidays and have just sorted out for next year.

We go end of August /September so we can utilise Camping Cheques
http://www.campingcheque.co.uk/en/ and this year have booked our crossing on the tunnelhttp://www.eurotunnel.com/ukcP3Main/ukcPassengers/ independantly because for some strange reason it's acutall cheaper to do so we will be travelling down through France over two/three days for a change instead of a 12 hour dash to the Med and will end up in Spain again

Also can well recommend TomTomNavigator5 for French navigation some of the campsites are so detailed in it that the roads are shown

If you want more just ask

Thanks so much for your replies. It has put my mind at rest that right hand drive on the "wrong" side of the road won't be much of an issue once we are used to it.

I will be definately be posting more questions nearer to our trip as we start planning properly over the coming months so no doubt your experience/knowledge will be called on again!

Thanks again

Sian
