Hi there to everyone concerned about the atlantic gardens building work.
If you ask the right people, you get the right answers! no offence intended to you "tourists" but as a resident on the island and running tours regularly from hotels, i do know a little more than those who only come here for a week or so!!
The building work next door to the atlantic has grown from its footings last year, to a full 5 storey building shell, the cranes are hovering over the site as we speak! building work here is likely to go on until August/September as thats when the foreman informed me that its hoped to be completed. The management at the Atlantic Gardens are very cooperative and understanding, and do not put people in the apartments that are alongside the building work.
The builders over here work weekdays and its rare that any noise will be evident at weekends.
The whole or Corralejo is being developed, all the outskirts are having new hotels/apartments and private building work done, so any hotels up near the top end of the main street, behind the Baku water park and new market, and hotels between PEDRO Y GUY VANDALEE road,(from where the OASIS PAPAGAYO HOTEL is) right down to the roundabout near the LAS AGUJAS aparthotel(on the last stretch before the sandy beaches and dunes), and as far back up as the Atlantic Gardens hotel. All these roads between these areas have new building projects going on with new hotels and apartments being built with the usual huge cranes spoiling the skyline.
This is to let you know that this is an ongoing development area, but it is not as intrusive as it sounds! it really depends on your location and the current state of development around that complex. So, if you are not sure, then ask, and as i am there twice a week, and in Caleta Twice a week, i can RELIABLY inform you of development!.
The Atlantic Gardens also have sold off several of their apartments, so thats why there are not so many available to rent now! but the hotel is excellent value for money and you wont be dissapointed.
If you are looking for a really excellent self catering facility, then try the 4 star Atlantis Suites owned by the Atlantis Hotels group, you get a superior junior suite with all mod cons in luxurious surroundings, with the options to go all inclusive or half board. its in Calle Las Dunas, in Corralejo, and has its own beach club and only a short walk to the beach proper.
If you want to avoid building works, then the hotels to choose are either in town or just along the waterfront, they were built earlier and no building works, close to town and nightlife, but being in the town, it will be noisier than usual!.
Caleta also has some developments going on, mostly on Chipmunk mountain, in fact, the houses and apartments are now right to the top!! hardly a chipmunk to be seen now!
Development work all along the shoreline from Caleta bay right round to the Atlantico Centre, with the Sheraton and Hilton hotels being builtnew housing( more like little shoe boxes if you ask me!) being built all around the golf course.
Finally, the few among you who know about the shipwreck, "ss America" or as she is now, the "AMERICAN STAR", she has been wrecked to a very bad state in the november tropical storm. The storm pulled the ship around slightly and opened it up to the full force of the sea, where the funnel collapsed and fell into the sea, the rear end has collapsed in on itself and has sunk into the deep water channel. A lot of debris from inside the ship has been washed up on the two sandy sandy beaches of the bay, including many toilet seats!! a bunkbed including its matress and various other odds and ends! mostly bits of wood from the panelling and decking etc.
The ship has lost its attractive upright stance, and now is listing badly with the rear end open to the full force of the sea, and its now only a matter of time before it collapses completely in on itself. if the weather and strong seas hold off a bit, its quite likely to last the summer without too much more damage, but the prognosis is that the ship will not survive another winter and will just be a pile of scrap metal in the water by next year.
I have up to date digital pics and movie if any one wants any, then email me.
ANY info i can help with, just ask!!!
have a good one!.
ps.
The weather right now is 21 degrees, sunny and warm with a cool breeze, cooler at night, so come with some warm clothing for evening wear and the strong winds during the day! January is almost the wettest month, its supposed to rain a max of 14 days a year here, and i think we have had that all in the last month!! hasta la vista amigo's!!
pps.

Just remembered, if you lovely people like the chipmunks, then it seems that a whole colony of them have found a new home in the bay in front of the America Shipwreck! be careful where you park because the little chaps are running all over the place! very friendly and come right up to you, especially if you offer them nuts etc, but their favourite seems to be crinkle cut ham and bacon crisps!!
If you want to visit the wreck yourself, then email me and ill send you a detailed map of directions. bye for now!
