where the hotel had a staff member on the door telling people to take back food that they were carrying out, they even told someone to return an apple.
So they should...you haven`t paid for it.
You`ve paid for breakfast to be eaten in the dinning room and that means all the food you can possibly consume within those breakfast hours.
I personally wouldn`t show myself up trying to sneak a rock hard cheese and ham sandwich out that will be only fit for the horse by dinnertime

and when you get the bellyache, no doubt you`ll blame the hotel.
If I was that tight, then I wouldn`t go away.
Most hotels that I have stayed in will allow you to take a little food out if they can see you have had no breakfast and you are feeling a bit off the first thing in the morning...they will also let you take a tray up to your room if someone is feeeling ill.
All you have to do is ASK.!
Fruit including apples are a "ton" for a few pence. euros or whatever.
I`ve seen adults staying in swanky 5* hotels on half board doing this...Tin pot millionaires who ain`t got two half pennies to scratch their backsides with...all penny pinching...pathetic
