Mabey just mabey this time around something may happen Unlike the last time this seems to be a company with some experience. It's main business is in dredging and clearing a channel for getting the old girl off the beach will be a major part of the operation. They own their own dredgers and ocean going tugs, the only doubt is that their main business seems major port construction around India and I'm not sure what salvage skills they have. Still it looks promising and it will be entertaining to watch their efforts during the coming season Alan

The River Princess must be the most photographed ship in the world; I would love to see the removal plans, as far as I can see they have 2 options. 1 drag her out to sea, 2, cut her up and bring her ashore in bits.

Option 1, I think she will break up, the frame and hull will be very weak after 6 years sitting in the water and resting on the sand every time the tide ebbs.

Option 2, cutting her up, what will they do when they get to the water line?

I agree with you Lez it will be a miracle if they do ge her off, especially as she was approaching he 20th birthday when she grounded, the date which would have seen her going to the breakers anyway. If she does break up it will be some mess, i've seen film of Alang up in Gujaret where they will take her if they are successfull and the state of the shore where they cut them up in indescibable. I would imagine that that area of the beach would be completley ruined if they start cutting her up where she is, a real nightmare scenario for Goa Alan

Just have to hope the bunkers are dry as well as the lub tanks and the engine sump, if that lot gets out. No more north Goa for years to come.

the authorities have clearly informed CIL that the
ship should not be broken up in Goa and that no waste should be
allowed into the water. Apparently, the plan is for CIL to first patch
up the holes that had been cut into the hull of the vessel and then
efforts would be made to refloat the ship.

some of the shacks have been moved for the time of the opperation.

you may have to use another one Spike

Hi Lez, had a chat with Ganesh and the shack is going up in the same place. To the right of him is Sudahs shack then Ryans, 2 others and then an open stretch of sand that had shacks there 2 years ago (these were removed to allow the workers on the ship to leave there equipment).
I will get in touch with him again to see if any other shacks are to be moved.
This is a funny one for you - one of our friends who was with us 2 years ago (female....sorry girls!) was listening to us talk about the removal and when we said it may have to brought off via the beach, she honestly thought that they would pick it up and put it on the back of a waggon !!
Thanks for getting me worried !! (not), when you out there anyway ? are we going to get sat in a bar and have a few bevvies ?

Walked along today to see how the salvage was going, glad to report that as usual nothing has happened, the holes in the side are still there, the ship is deserted, no sign of any salvage presence at all, so it looks like it's situation normal, if it was'nt Goa you woud'nt believe that you would be given a contract and not even go the length to put a watchman on board Alan

For Lez, Spike and everyone else who's followed this saga, at 10.00a.m. yesterday a dredger hove into view and tied alongside at the forward end, the side opposite the one with the holes cut in it. The put quite a few workers on board and it looks as if they mean business this time It's got a crane on board and a large grab so I wouls think they'll be patching the hull holes and getting the sand ot of her first so mabey this will really be the begining of the end of the longest running salvage story in history Alan

At last ! - but will 180 days be enough ? This company that is doing the removal do seem more experienced than the previous 2 when you read about them,so fingers crossed they can do it without much dissruption.

I'm just hoping she doesn't break up and enough sand is removed from under the hull so she floats before the tugs start pulling, a lorra work to do.

what type of dredger is it Alan?

It was a small grab type one with a crane onboard, it,s gone now but a crew have been left on board, big water tanks, and other supplies lifted on deck, and lots of hammering going on, perhaps trying to free some hatch covers to get access to the holds to get at the sand thats entered through the holes cut in the hull. I imagine they will need something like a suction dredger to move the sand when the real work starts, but by the look of the companies web site they have the vessels and the expertise for the job Alan
